So I see all these articles being posted by other fanboys as 'ownage' about how Nintendo isn't good at making core games or doesn't like making mature games. But is that really a bad thing? I've always thought of them to be like Disney. 1. They're both very successful. 2. They're both unchallenged in family friendly markets. 3. Both of their entertainment is nice, simple, feel good entertainment. I would rather be successful than respected by a group of people who would not hesitate to abandon me if I screwed up. And besides; if I was a CEO at Nintendo making tens of millions I could afford to start a private company and fun my own personal hardcore games as my pet projects and not have to worry if they turn a profit or not. So yeah, best of both worlds.

I prefer old Disney and old Nintendo over new Disney and new Nintendo. As a gamer, I am not primarily concerned with the sales but rather the quality of the products that Nintendo is offering me. Combined with Nintendo's lack of distinct focus on it's longterm fans and its terrible third party support (yes, that does impact the quality of the Wii as a system), I have been left rather unsatisfied and Nintendo will have to do something really amazing to make me purchase another one of their systems.

I've thought that since SNES Mortal Kombat, and reading my issues of Nintendo Power from yesteryear.

It's okay though, I like Disney too!

I honestly wouldn't blame poor third party support on Nintendo. Dead Space Extraction is suppose to be the greatest third party game and greatest core game on the Nintendo Wii. But its a Rail-shooter! Do you even care for Rail-shooters anymore? I sure don't.

Yes I believe you are right somewhat however Disney hasn't been nearly as innovative as Nintendo has which I think separates them but yes I do see what you mean.

Meh, they are like Disney in the sense that they make kid/family friendly products but Walt Disney is a monster of a company that has it's hands into much more then just animated movies or even G rated movies. Nintendo doesn't even come close, it's much smaller and this is the first time they have ever been a monster in the gaming world, they are just the most recognizable but the PS1 and PS2 were the first true Monsters in the gaming world just plain dominating and Sony and MS as a Company are much bigger and more diverse. So no, even though Disney does have a studio for kids and is known for their family friendly products they appeal to an older audience much more then Nintendo does, and of course is a much more dominating force then Nintendo is. Remember Disney owns Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, and Miramax.

Yup, I agree Nintendo is like Disney in a sense because they keep their games Family Friendly while providing entertainment for adults also. While I don't own a Wii I can definitely see its place in the market. Parents can buy a Wii with out having to worry too much about its content being appropriate for the kids while adults can have fun during parties making fools of themselves with the Wiimote.

Both of them have degraded their integrity lately by making a lot of garbage? I disagree, Disney has only had 2 good animated films (non-pixar) in the last 10 years, nintendo still makes good games, Disney has the disney/family channel full of gutter trash, Nintendo I guess has crap like Wii-music in comparison, but Nintendo is able to get out more than 2 quality products in a decade.

I would very much agree with this in the sense that:

  1. They have been around a long time and have many cultural icons that are well-recognized and sell movies/merchandise based on that recognition.
  2. They are very comfortable with their established formula and success, and don't feel the need to branch out into new markets.
  3. Do not wish to take risks with new ideas that stray from the successful formula.
  4. And finally, despite being "family friendly" and "child-oriented" still find a market among adults who enjoy their material just as much as kids (i.e. especially Pixar related movies).

Both have a cultural icon that's synonymous in their respective fields, and they both have a family friendly image that appeals to both kids and adults. While the spirit of Walt Disney is living on in Studio Ghibli (Disney publishes and dubs their films in North America under John Lasseter) and Pixar, the magic that Disney brings is still felt by millions across the globe. Similarly, Nintendo has always emphasized fun gameplay that's easy to learn but hard to master, and especially with Shigaru Miyamoto, emphasizing exploration in games instead of going from Point A to Point B. In that case, yes, Nintendo is the Disney of video gaming.

Except for developers who want to make their games have excellent story, writing and dialogue as well. Or for developers who want to push the boundaries between cinema and gaming. Gaming is about more than just gameplay, it is now a medium much like books; it was originally designed as a means to bring board-game type things to the electronic medium, but it has evolved into much more, which includes things like story-telling, atmosphere and character development.

Disney does stories and visuals best because they are a movie company, and that's what movies are all about. Nintendo does gameplay and polish best, because they are a game company, and that's what games are all about.

Miyamoto said when he was making Super Mario Galaxy that the game would use motion sensing in innovative ways. It turns out that 90% of the time, you're just waggling the remote to make Mario spin or throw something, and it feels like this was originally assigned to a button, but later made to be part of the motion control scheme at the last minute. Disregarding gameplay and polish, it turns out that Nintendo's games that actually make the best use of the Wii remote and motion sensing are either third party games or the casual fare like Wii Sports Resort, etc. What's the point of releasing a new console with an innovative control scheme if most of the time, your revered first-party brands aren't even making effective use of its features?

Maybe I don't play enough Wii games, but Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, and the upcoming Zelda, as well as their bigger series, the Wii Sports series, have been great uses for the Wiimote technology. Metroid Prime for first person games, Zelda will use Motion + exclusively, Wii Sports games were the killer apps for the remote, and Mario galaxy showed how a traditional game can benefit from motion control. I say they are more than effective uses, especially since the first uses of the analog stick weren't even as varied as they are today.

Most of what those games use the Wiimote for is a more time-consuming and complicated way of pushing buttons. I think that was his point. Basically everything in Prime 3 aside from the IR pointer could easily just have been done with a button press instead of a waggle of the Wiimote/nunchuk. Not to mention the grappling beam/nunchuk thing was incredibly touchy and got me killed a couple times. Had it just been a button like in the previous two games, it would have worked whenever I pressed it.

There is a difference between "innovative/effective" and merely "integration." And basically all of Nintendo's main first-party games up until the release of motion + have merely "integrated" motion controls into them as a means of circumventing the need for buttons. Only now, almost 4 years after the Wii's release are we even starting to see proper innovative and effective use... and its still not universal. Nor can it be, considering motion controls don't benefit every genre, and are a detriment to some.

Nope. Wall-e for example is a 'cartoon' which kids could watch, but has an underlying message made for adults.

"Mature games" = Story based games with focus on realistic graphics, or sports, acoording to many people here.

Nintendo games = Gameplay based games with little to no story, which people of all ages could play because there is no complicated story which is required to read / understand, that's why, my guess, kids like Nintendo games more

it has a message, but few adults will see it that aren't taking their kids to the movies. a better example of a good disney movie that adults and kids would enjoy is Pirates of the Carribean.

  4. And finally, despite being "family friendly" and "child-oriented" still find a market among adults who enjoy their material just as much as kids (i.e. especially Pixar related movies).

it has a message, but few adults will see it that aren't taking their kids to the movies. a better example of a good disney movie that adults and kids would enjoy is Pirates of the Carribean.

You missed my point (I assume you where talking about my previous post). Adults get the most out of the movie, while kids can still enjoy it. This applies to Nintendo games aswell.

[QUOTE="Willy105"][...] and that's what games are all about.foxhound_fox

Except for developers who want to make their games have excellent story, writing and dialogue as well. Or for developers who want to push the boundaries between cinema and gaming. Gaming is about more than just gameplay, it is now a medium much like books; it was originally designed as a means to bring board-game type things to the electronic medium, but it has evolved into much more, which includes things like story-telling, atmosphere and character development.

no offense theres only a handfull of games that have a good story this gen
