2K Confirms Civilization VI On Nintendo Switch Will Not Include Online Multiplayer

As this month's release of Sid Meier's Civilization VI on Switch draws closer, the game's official YouTube channel has been uploading videos teaching newcomers how to play the game. One thing Nintendo players won't be learning about is how the online multiplayer component works. That's because in this version of the game there's no such mode.

A Reddit user known as 'WinneonSword' was reportedly the first to point out that the eShop listing for Civilization VI makes no mention of online multiplayer and only references the game's local multiplayer. While it was suspected this mode might drop as a day one patch, publisher 2K has since confirmed to Eurogamer that the Switch version of the game won't support it at all:

Civilization 6 for Nintendo Switch includes support for local cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players via a Wireless Network. It will not have online multiplayer.

I hardly do multiplayer in the Civ games anyway, so... eh.

What does this have to do with Nintendo? Are you saying that Nintendo should make it mandatory for all Switch games to have online play now and they should reject games from third-parties who don't? Why would they do that?

Sure. They have ordered around third-party in the past, and trying to promote (terrible) online.

Sony and Microsoft charge 3x as much for online but they'd never try to force every single game to have online multiplayer. You're just looking for a reason to complain. You have tons of reasons to complain, so why not just stick to those instead of making one up? What next, are you going to make thread complaining about how Nintendo hasn't added a Battle Royale mode to BotW to utilize online to justify the service? This is one of the most desperate attempts at trolling I've seen on this board.

Sony gives me free cool games I can play offline though. Good, AAA quility ones. With communities, voice-communtication etc...

Nintendo aggressively goes round closing rom sites so they can offer an "online only" pile of a shit. Other than that, offers absolutely nothing other than making me pay to play a game that was free the day before.

In fact, given how limited some online games are for Switch (Street Fighter 2), they actively hurt it.

And we are getting overpriced games not even offering online MP.

You literally could have just made another thread complaining about actual problems with the service, like the fact that Nintendo still doesn't use dedicated servers in any of their games. Nintendo done exactly this when they were against Sega, forcing Sega to create clone games (Master Of Darkness, Golden Axe Warrior etc... )

Wow. That takes some real balls to charge full price for these games while taking features away. Nintendo fans pay the chump tax hard, and think everyone else should be jealous for some reason.

Sucks for those who would use it. For the record, I've never once played Civ multiplayer, since Civ III came out 17 years ago. I don't think I'd miss it.

Civilization is not one of those IP's that makes me think online is a key component, unlike other IP's. But again, that's just me.

Also its P2P, whats the point of paid restriction when nintendo aint even using its own server. Its pretty sad when nintendo sheeps tries to defend the service just because its cheaper.

First of all, Sheep is Plural! Secondly, who plays Civilization VI for it's poor multiplayer component? Last, as a Nintendo fan, of course the online is crap but it can get better later on.

I didn’t even know you could play Civ MP these days. I like these types of games to be SP experiences anyways but totally cool for more couch multiplayer games for families to play. I love that about Nintendo.

I do play civ 5 for online multiplayer but only with serious matches since just like other Civ games(Civ 6 included), 1 match can take ages to finish. Probably not ideal for switch pisspoor battery but this why mods and groups like Noquitter exist.

If you're playing an online multiplayer match on the Switch then you're almost certainly not playing on the go and can simply use an external power source, so battery life becomes a non-issue. At any rate, you would have to ask Firaxis and 2K why they chose not to enable multiplayer since the hardware and software is capable of supporting it.
