Nintendolife has the report.

  • Total HW units sold in first 12 months: DS — 2.3 million, 3DS — 4.5 million
  • Total number of SW titles released in first 12 months: DS — 58, 3DS — 100+
  • Total units of software sold in first 12 months: DS — 5 million, 3DS — 9 million+
  • Total $ sales (HW, SW and accessory) in first 12 months: DS — $540 million, 3DS — $1.2 billion+

Keep in mind that DS was priced $150 all along. 3DS was $250 for roughly 5 months, and $170 for the remainder of that period, so it has always been more expensive than DS. 3DS software is also abit more expensive than DS sw.

Interesting to say the least.

Not following?

3DS had sold 15.03m (or shipped or whatever) units in 2011 alone, it's somewhere around 16-17m right now WW.

Japan + US is 9.5m.

Europe, as always, is a big hole in the numbers - last number is the really outdated 1M from September. But I imagine it's doing pretty well there too.

I'm assuming other systems have sold more during the same timeframe than 3DS did?

Since there's no "record breaking" or "fastest selling" notes, it's just a comparison between DS and 3DS.

Wow that means it sold 250,000 in February, which means that it had a pretty big increase :o

Vita has a long battle ahead. I wouldn't want to be in Sony's shoes right now that's for sure.

This is great news! This shows that handheld gaming is not dead, and all of those Android/iPhone lovers were proved wrong. People want to play real games, not just crappy app games.

Hopefully the Vita will have the same success :)

The Vita will be successful, just you see. It might take some time to find its footing, but it will end up doing good.

It'll end up finding its niche and selling about 40 million units worldwide.

Nintendo just knows how to do their sh*t.

Expect that lead to see an increase to 9 milli -10 milli in just 2012 alone.

Well yeah, it did 4m in 2011, and that's considering $250 for 5 months. Then you factor in the year over year increase which is typical for consoles + highly aggressive Nintendo.

I almost bought a 3DS yesterday but figured I would just wait it out to E3 and see what is announced in the handheld space since I don't "need" a handheld now.

The same way they did last time with good games that are as close to the home console experience as we can get on a portable. Psp sold 70 million not bad for sony's first and the vita and most games sold out here in my area when psp didn't. So both look to be doing better than last gen.

I think it is going to hit $199 in a few months. Or, some type of $250 game+memory card bundle.

Sales were good in Japan in the first week too. It had a sharp decline after that.

I bought one at launch and was pretty much kicking myself until recently. Rune Factory 4 is on the way (probably not for a while in the US but Natsume is pretty good about getting these games over) Tale of the Abyss 3D has dropped a new Etrian Oddessy is getting ready to come, Virtue's Last Reward... so now I'm pretty happy with my purchase. Hopefully the ball keeps rolling. If only the system wasn't region-locked and I could have AR Miku dancing on my desk...
