Nintendo Says Game Consoles Have Been TV Parasites

"Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had some choice words about the Wii U's advantages here (bolded words bolded for emphasis by me):

I am not sure this is an appropriate expression, but video game consoles have long been "parasites" of TV sets at home. In other words, game consoles have used TV sets in a family instead of being equipped with their own screen. However, the Wii U will be the first console free from TV sets, in which you can play the Wii U while someone else is watching TV or you yourself can watch TV while using the Wii U. As you can experience deeper entertainment with both the Wii U GamePad and the TV screen, we would like to enrich it but, at the same time, we hope to furnish it with games you can enjoy only with the Wii U GamePad."

Even Iwata himself says it may not be the appropriate expression, lay off a bit. That aside, the feature itself is nifty but I never once said, "What would make this game so much cooler is if I could play it while others in the room watched TV. That would be all sorts of epic."

Eh, why would I want my console experience to be free of my 50inch HDTV in replacement of a6.2 inch game pad? If I wanted to play portable I could just whip out my 3DS/Vita.

Thank you. My TV is bad ass, that's why I play game on it. It's the reason I don't have a PSP or Vita. Why would I play a console-like game on a tiny screen with **** speakers, when I can play an actual console game on a nice big screen with surround sound?

The console (parasite) relies on the TV screen (host) in order to to played. A silly analogy, but it works.

I like the idea of not needing television to play the console. I can't even watch TV after 10 pm. because my downstairs neighbour always loses his **** for the slightest of sound that happens to come from my apartment.

It's not innovative or really a game changer at all, but his analogy is correct.

I get what he means. My three brothers and I were constantly arguing over who got to play on the console or watch tv when we had two. Even now, one of our tvs are rarely used for anything other than playing games. Kind of annoying when you wanna watch tv.

I would not be able to concentrate on a game if some guy was watching TV right next to me. Besides i think most people have more then enough TV or Computer screens to go around in this day and age.

But that said I don't really see myself using that feature at all.

Stupid Iwata. If people wants to play console games on a handheld they would get a PSVita instead since it's more powerful, cheaper, has multi-touch screen and rear pad, longer battery life, shorter recharge time, close to HD resolution, better speakers, beautiful OLED screen, and more games. The Wii gamepad on the other hand has a pathetic SD resolution that looks utterly blurry and pixelated compared to PSVita, cell phones, and tablets. Also, its games are more expensive, crappy single-touch resisitive screen that cannot recognize finger taps, swipes, and other gestures, relying instead on a stylus (go play viewtiful joe DS to see how miserable this is to be constantly swapping between holding a stylus with one hand and the other holding the system, to both hands holding the system), tethered close to the WiiU system, potential lag, etc. Also it's quite hypocritical for Iwata to tout this since it requires games to not utilize any tv and controller screen interaction.

I always love seeing self ownage, and I admit TC has nerver fail to amaze.
