Don't ask me I am absolutely surprised by this PS4 news. its a 5 year old console selling officially at $299/$399, very competitive to switch $299 value. Xbox is dead as usual don't bother.

It's because Nintendo overshipped during the holidays while trying to clear stock of the old model. Switch should be ahead in actual sales by all accounts.

It's my belief that the console market has only ever been able to sustain three competitors while the other, weaker, entries fall by the wayside.

Pre-Playstation the big three were Atari, Sega and Nintendo.

Atari died as a console maker when Sony entered the fray with Playstation, making the three, Sony, Sega and Nintendo.

The same happened when Microsoft joined with the superior online of Xbox, knocking Sega out of the running. Past failures of Sega hardware had already weakened them for when Xbox jumped in.

But I digress. Congrats to both Sony and Nintendo for great sales numbers.

Eh, I don’t know. Taking shipped numbers from one Quarter doesn’t really mean all that much on its own. I think you have to factor in how many units were shipped previously and how the actual sales are going and such. This information doesn’t really seem to have much meaning on its own.

@Chutebox: They can't, but they can cut deals to convince distributors and retailers to order extra units. Most likely they still would have shipped more than Nintendo without it, but there's a reason that Sony hit almost exactly 100M. I'm not accusing Sony of fowl play or anything btw. Nintendo overshipped Switch during the holiday, which is why shipments were down YoY last quarter despite sales being way up.

If you don't believe it though, let me ask you this: Why did Sony just cut their PS4 projection for the FY by a million?

During the same quarter last year, Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles. While 3.2 million is a drop, it’s a minuscule one for a machine that is about to be 5 years old.

This show without doubt that the PS4 still going strong and keeping its sales going,while the xbox business dropped almost half by 48%.

This thread is about the number of units of the PS4 Sony shipped in comparison to how many units of the Switch Nintendo shipped and in that context it doesn’t really mean much of anything really. This has nothing to do with Microsoft and the Xbox One so you bringing that up is equally meaningless.

Sony Q2 2019 is in line with previous. Q2 2018 ship numbers was 3.9m, make sense to lower projection when this year they ship 700k less units. Sony always been conservative with their estimates unlike Nintendo which tends to overestimate their numbers and lowering them later in Q3 when they realize they will not hit target.

The original estimate was already lower than last year's. I doubt that Sony was expecting to be flat or up, so any way you slice it the story's the same. Do you really think them getting exactly what they needed to hit 100M is pure luck?

Also, I love how you're treating 1/3 of the Switch FYs as the norm. I guess this also means you're expecting Switch to be down YoY since Nintendo only projected it being slightly up?

EDIT: Also, you got last year's number wrong. it was 3.3M. If Sony is basically flat 100% naturally there's no reason to revise down.

@tormentos: I'm not trying to hurt your pride or accuse Sony of foul play. It's just normal business practice. Nintendo did the same thing during the holidays last year. You don't need to get mad because there's nothing wrong with it. It always balances out later. It's also not the first time Sony's done it with PS4, as a year or two ago Sony sold more than they shipped for the year, and there's only one way that can happen. But, again, it always balances out in the end so it really doesn't matter.

Uh... No? They shipped more than what was actually needed to meet consumer demand. That's what the term means, even if it's actually retailers causing it. That'll be more clear next quarter when shipments are down more than you might expect.

The other thread even has Microsoft's head honcho Phil Spencer admitting Xbox One's exclusives were disappointing this generation, and weaker than PS4's library. We can go by sales, critic reviews, user reviews, Metascore averages. You name it, PS4 pretty much beats Xbox One from every conceivable angle.

I am just saying based on trend it is in line with ps4 overall performance. They always been conservative with their forecast as well.

Regarding Nintendo, I am basing this on their usual actions for the past 5 years. They forecasted wii u, 3ds and switch to ship at certain amount only to revise the numbers later in Q3. I am not expecting massive growth for Switch simply because I dont feel the shipment numbers justify it. Though Nintendo is strong in holiday seasons and with new $199 model launching I could be wrong.

I remember one of my local store managers was complaining how they kept receiving PS2's while nobody was buying them (around the Wii launch). He showed me his storage and one quarter was PS2 boxes. XD

He probably stared at the screen, blinked 12 times in disbelief, and still can't understand how PS4 is selling more than Switch in 2019.

Nintendo has made improvements in bringing in outside third party games (much better than what the Wii U got), but Nintendo still need lots of improvement in how they handle online. And for some games, the Switch is still underpowered, and many ports just aren't selling or boosting console sales enough.

When Nintendo doesn't have their first party games, they slow down, and that's why PS4 and Days Gone is still able to clobber Switch in 2019. Oh, and LABO VR was a BOMB.

Again, this isn't an accusation of fowl play. It's just business, and it's 100% legitimate because, at the end of the day, retailers chose to buy the extra units since they know that they'll sell them either way. It happened with PS4 years ago, it happened with Switch over the holidays, and now we see that it's happening with PS4 again. It's not a bad thing, it's not cheating, and there's nothing wrong with it. You don't need to cry.

@whatafailure: it's not really selling more though. Switch had a lot of stock left after the holidays, and after that shipments slowed down further due to the current model going out of production. Switch has been ahead every time actual sales have been given, and it's way up YoY every time while PS4 is down significantly. That doesn't match shipments though, obviously, so either Switch is conveniently bombing and PS4 is conveniently seeing massive sales growth in all of the regions we don't know sales for, or there's missing context. If you believe that it's the former, you need to explain why Sony lowered their forecast if sales are rising in most of the world.

All that stuff he's accusing Sony of, Microsoft actually did with Xbox One. He's projecting at the wrong company. Channel stuffing was the name of the game with Xbox, which definitely helped those fire sales get into motion when the big green walls started piling up. MS had no problem forcing retailers to take on their load (heh heh) until some outlets said "ENOUGH". That was right about the time they stopped reporting numbers.

A lot of them were. There's people still wanting "revenge" against Sony because SEGA bowed out of the console market. I enjoyed Dreamcast too, but I got over it pretty fast.

• 14.41 million in 2014
• 16.75 million in 2015
• 18.41 million in 2016
• 21.2 million in 2017

That's a total of 74.97 million before 2018.
