Now hold on, I'm not saying they should be making games about grizzled men swearing like sailors and killing everything that moves. Rather, I feel when Nintendo is making a new game, particularly a new IP, it wouldn't hurt to take more inspiration from Western pop-culture. Like American Comics, American Cartoons, and even non-Japanese styles of humor as well.
It's not like they haven't done this before either. Metroid was influenced by Aliens, F-Zero was inspired by Super-hero comics, Star Fox was inspired by Thunderbirds, even Mario was partially inspired by Alice in Wonderland. But many of the company's more recent games, seem mainly influenced from either personal experience of the creator, or Japanese sensibilities. That's all fine, and that's not to say they can't use Japanese influence either.
But a better balance between the two will go a long way, and give Nintendo more of an edge over most Japanese developers. Who either have devolved into trying to pander to what they think Western gamers want, or became complacent with the same regurgitated anime tropes and JRPG conventions (though things are slowly improving).
