Sure, sure as long as we all agree Kinectimals is proof MS never stopped being hardcore as well.
Nintendo has never been hardcore, not in the NES/SNES/N64/GC/Wii era. They have always tried to focus on appealing to everyone.
Here is one of the things Mr. Saunders said in the article: "I don't think it's so much about reclaiming them… I think with a game like Mario Galaxy 2, for example, we've continued making those sorts of games and we still try to make games for as broad an audience as possible."
Personally I haven't been impress with Nintendo since NES/SNES days. The N64 was average, the Gamecube was horrible and the Wii is not for me. The only Nintendo handheld I had was the original Gameboy as haven't been impressed with GBA/SP/Micro or DS. 3DS is something I might get down the road though. http://gamingbolt.com/nintendo-we-never-stopped-being-hardcorePSP107
If you not impressed by DS nothing can impress you...
Sure, but you did stopp taking risks in software and are thinking too much with your wallet in mind right now.
Not publishing games like Fatal Frame 4, Xenoblade, Last Story or Mother 3 tarnishes my respect for you. Releasing a SNES rom for $30 doesn´t help you either,

Ocarina of Time was basicly A link to the Past in 3D, while Metroid Prime was basicly Super Metroid in 3D. Super Mario Galaxy is more innovative (in terms of level design) than any of those 2. Even then, neither Mario, Zelda or Metroid are particulary hardcore. They have always been highly accessible games that are very easy to get into and enjoy.
Of course they never STOPPED.
Has anyone PLAYED their games?
Metriod? Donkey Kong? Mario?
Hardcore Titles guys.

Sure, if you want to claim that Half Life was only a Doom rip-off, or Starcraft a simple Dune 2 rip-off.
They were huge groundbreaking new games. Super Mario Galaxy has nothing on them. It´s one of the best games this generation but so is Uncharted 2.
Games like that had never been seen before. They pushed gaming forward.
Here is a example. A ton of developers took direct influense from those games and crafted their own ideas around them. They changed gaming. No one is doing that with SMG. The Hauser Brothers have said several times that without Mario 64 there woudn´t be a GTA3.
This generation Nintendo once again changed gaming but with hardware instead of software.
Nintendo are releasing core game after core game after core game but not games that changes the industry anymore.
Also Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Even too hardcore for the reviewer.
Bigboi500
Well, Radiant Dawn was too easy on easy and too hard on medium. It also wasn´t as good as the Gamecube game. It´s a sold 7.5 game but not the best in the franchise.
It has also always been better on handhelds (IMO :P )

What exactly did Metroid Prime do that hadnt been done before?
What did Ocarina of Time do that hadnt been done before? Maybe the whole playing songs on your ocarina, but its other "innovative" mechanic lock-on (which it admitedly evolved) has been done before.
Super Mario 64 was revolutionary. More innovative than Super Mario Galaxy. I will give you that.
Dont get me wrong, I LOVED Metroid Prime and Ocarina of Time, and both would probably be in my top 10 games of all time list.
Edit: You are wrong about Fire Emblem, it was best on consoles (or at least the SNES). Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu, is still the best in the series, with huge maps and a story that spans over 20 years.
if by hardcore games they mean a 5 year old can master them lol
nevertheless....fun stuff. btw, super mario sunshine > entire wii catalog.

This. OoT and SM64 revolutionized genres and both took a massive step forward in game design. Something like Hyrule field had never been seen before in a game before OoT.
I have only owned one nintendo console, the wii. But I used the virtual console a lot and really liked it. I have matured to the point that I know " hardcore" and other labels are just products of opinion. Nintendo is a game company with no massive os sales or films and music properties to fall back on. I have the utmost respect for them. cainetao11
Indeed, Hardcore is just a silly label, a label whose definition we can never agree on. What I view as casual another person may view it as hardcore and vice versa.
Hardcore is such a floppy term these days, but if I were to call any games this gen hardcore, they'd be
-Devil May Cry 4
-Donkey Kong Returns
-Sin & Punishment Star Successor
-Punch-Out!!
Nintendo published three out of the four I listed. In general, nintendo has been releasing the far more challenging games this gen. Most other devs really softened up (this doesn't go without exception though)
Who cares.
As long as they make games you like.. who cares if they're "hardcore" or "casual".
God I hate those labels.

Wow, you are so cool and awesome!! I bet you're amazing at Kinect SportsWho cares.

It's an insecurity issue, they don't feel like theyre "AWESOME BRAH" if they're not eating guts and babies on a screen. :P
There is no denying they have been a bit rusty in the "harcore" department with the Wii, but certainly it has some great games. I still feel like some of them take a back seat though, which is a shame. The 3DS appears to be returning Nintendo to former glory, and I cannot BELIEVE they are making another Paper Mario RPG (so happy :)). I really hope Nintendos next console beefs up the graphics and online, but most importantly the good titles. Wii has been doing better as of late, but some of them have been dissapointments too. Please do something with metroid, because Prime 1 and 2 stomp all over 3 and other M :P.
if u never stopped caring about the hardcore nintendo, then we would be getting games like The Last Story and Xenoblade since i dont see them here that proves their statement is invalid
reaver-x
Haha true...GIVE ME THOSE GAMES NINTENDO! Also I hope their new IP coming (Pandoras Tower) is going to be in NA, cause the one picture we have seen makes it look awesome already.
[QUOTE="N30F3N1X"]
Ever heard of a thing called "spectrum"?
Maroxad
Umm yes. Still doesnt change the fact that Hardcore/casual are still silly terms that are HIGHLY opinionated. What is hardcore and what is casual is something we do not and will NEVER agree on.
Sure we can't. That does not negate the fact that those terms exist and although the spectrum is blurry to our sight you can say and debate which game/gamer is more casual/hardcore.
Wow, you are so cool and awesome!! I bet you're amazing at Kinect SportsNuck81
What exactly are you trying to say?
Now that I look at your avatar, you're the guy who got stuck into the stereotype debate and came up with the sentence "PC is for kids", aren't you? Do you plan to bring this into another comic show?
I have, and Nintendo made the simplest actions gesture based. That's not hardcore. If people don't think they're hardcore they need to play some Donkey Kong Country Returns.

I suppose a mindless quicktime button-mash with extra gore would make it better?

No. But just mapping roll and pound to a button instead of shoehorning teh waggle into everything would.Nintendo hardcore? I don't know and i honestly don't care, only thing i know is that every single gen since NES they have provide me with the best experiences when it comes to videogames and this gen is no exception, and that's the only thing i care, they can continue with Wii Music and Nintendogs, but as long as they keep making games that appeal to me like DKC, Zelda, Metroid and Super Mario i'm fine.

No. But just mapping roll and pound to a button instead of shoehorning teh waggle into everything would. You are right, that alone don't make a "hardcore" gamer, thankfully, DCKR also has difficulty, great level design, good gameplay and it's a lot of fun.
