So I gave into the hype and bought a Wii.  Along with the console I got three 'sets' of controllers, Zelda, Trauma center and Wii sports (anyone thinking this is a cheap option in the UK is being sorely mislead).

So I open it all up, marvelling at the tiny nature of the beast, hook it up to the TV, find a suitable place for the sensor bar, phone up some friends and settle down (well I say down, more like up) to play Wii Sports while I wait for the guys to turn up.

There I am, swinging away with my mote, smacking baseballs and tennisballs and  having fun doing it.  I was being a little cautious having seen all of the threads on Wii mote damage but still really getting into it and, being honest, working up a bit of a sweat as well.   All good fun.

Then the guys turn up.  Now most of us haven't played a Wii before but one friend has had his for little over a month and so immediately starts telling us all about how simple to play Wii sports is and how good he is at it.  Typical gamer that I am I say 'yeah, yeah i'll kick your ass' and jump up to grab a controller.  However while i'm poised to swing he sits down with his mote and the game starts.  Now I was expecting him to stand up and be swinging along side me....but no, this is not how you play apparently.  He proceeds to show us how small flicks of the wrist are as good as any big swing.  Little forward motions equal the biggest jabs you can put out....well I have to say I was a little taken back by this.

So we get to talking about how the controller works while everyone sits around 'flicking' their motes and he tells me some quite disturbing news.  The controller, while an excellent idea, has one big flaw;  It doesn't seem to sense the RANGE of motion but just 'motion'.  This means that making a small movement with the remote is exactly the same as a large motion.  The only difference that is registered is the SPEED of the movement not the RANGE.  I scoff at the idea but he shows me exactly how this works in both Wii Sports and Zelda before going on to tell me it's the same in WWSM and Wii Play.

This is a huge let down for me.  While I was having fun swinging the controller to hit a ball it lost all feel the moment I realised I could just 'flick' and achieve the same results.  Now I know people are going to say 'play it the way you want to play it' but I just feel like an idiot standing up and swinging when you don't have to.  Where is the fun if the guy you play against can just chill on the sofa and beat you by 'flicking'?

My only hope here is that it is the software at fault and not the hardware.  Maybe they will release a game that forces you to use a range of motion but I'm getting a bad feeling about it.  Anyone else feel the same way?

It just provides variety, some people wanna play it the boring way, let them. It just gives lazy people an extra option. It's also definitely a software thing, check out bowling, you won't be able to flick your wrist to play bowling.

I'll try it again when I get home from work. Trouble is that was one he showed us how to 'push flick' to play.

*sigh* ADD Generation FTL. Point = Controller doesn't sense a range of motion only motion + speed. You really should read the last few paragraphs though to get my meaning...if that isn't too much for you to handle ;).

hmm im not too sure thats exactly true. try golf in wii sports and make half a swing say. ure character should stop his swing and move back up if u move it up again. or try baseball and just wiggle the wiimote around a little bit and ull notice that the bat makes little motions. same with bowling. in wii sports the timing of swings is the most important element though, not the speed at which u hit them. this was implemented in the game to keep it simple. otherwise ppl would have to be pros at the sports and it would loose its pick up and play appeal. in the case of zelda, the motion sensing is treated as button presses. theres no 1:1 movement based fighting or anything. i dont think this is a limitation of the controller but a design decision at the software level.

I think its great that you can just flick it. If I just swing my arms in my cramped room I am gunna smack my hand into something and hurt it.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo said that when they announced the Wii.

Otherwise age and ability to move would be quite a big factor in being good at games. Yes you can sit down and achive the same result flicking your wrist.

I guess i can understand why you are a bit disappointed when a couch potato can beat you while you are working up all the sweat but me and my friends are having a lot more fun when no one sits down. So when we play we all WANT to stand and jump around. But don't expect that to change. People sitting on a couch will be able to play the games just as good as if they were swinging the bat like a pro.

Thanks for the compliment man, I agree that the new film is among the best of the series. Great to see there is another Rocky fan in SW.

I've known this since before I got the Wii.

Do you honestly think sitting down and flicking your wrist was the way these games were meant to be played? It's not very fun that way, in all seriousness. I derive great fun from standing up, and making a fool of myself when I play. (Except in Zelda, because the controls... meh, I could take 'em or leave 'em. Doesn't make it any more fun for me.)

Thank you, someone who actually gets the point. This is not the way Ninty advertises the system and it is not a 'huge' innovation to wiggle a stick in your hand to play games. I wish I could just ignore this and enjoy flailing my arms about but seeing as it makes no odds in the game it just makes me feel stupid for doing so. If I wanted to 'use my imagination' i'd have bought a book not a games console.

That's like saying "Basketballs not fun because you could just walk and shoot instead of dunking and doing layups"

it depends how you play the gamet hat could make it fun, and still games will take advantage of the wiimote.

well... I'm glad it's not exactly like the xbox 360 or ps3. then it would be 'just another gamecube', which would be another disappointment and I wouldn't have bought one.

I'm happy with the wii right now.  It's not perfect by all means. It's new technology which will be improved in further generations.

Not true, the range of motion and determination is detected, it's just not part of wii sports, there are so many examples of this don't even know where to begin.

it gives you an extra option, which is a good thing.  Some people may not want to stand up and play, however those that do want to still can.  Plus, maybe some people can't stand up at all to play the games.

Wii sports was never meant to be the be all and end all of Wii's capabilities, it was meant to be a demo of the Wii for people to get used to the system, now its turned out to be an amazing draw to bring people in, but believe me, there will be massive improvements in how games use the controllers, just look to the new Tiger woods golf and notice how much more depth it has than Wii sports golf, Fight night as well is going to be much more fleshed out than Wii boxing, and there has been a new bowling game announced for Wii as well.

I noticed this too (sept on Bowling so I figured it was software) and figured "whatever" and continued playing the normal way you should. I still find it far more fun than just flicking my wrist.

On the other hand, I swing it for a full range of motion. It works just fine either way.

It's true. Absolutely true.

When I figured out that no matter how you swing the sword in Zelda it triggers the same predefined motion, I realized that motion wasn't adding anything to the game. Overhand, side arm, stab, doesn't matter, all dependent of what button you're holding at the time. Shooting arrows, still just a cursor on the screen, could have done it with a stick.

Then in Wii sports, I realized I couldn't hit a home run no matter how hard I swung, or if I swung under the ball to hit it in the air, or swung down to hit it on the ground, all the same predefined results, it's just timing. Flick the remote at the exact time, ball goes screaming out of the park. I can even swing right down at the ground, still goes sailing.

I was also hoping that if it flicked my wrist at the end of a pitch I could through a curve ball, but nope, just hold a trigger and move the controller in a downward motion.

Same goes for all the other sports, can't really tell how it works in alot of the other games, since the only one I'll even remotely interested in right now is Elebits. Maybe Sonic will show me something next week...

It's not motion sensing gameplay, it's motion sensing replacing button presses or analog stick movements. If how I swung, or how hard I punched, or the path the remote moved mattered at all, then it would be something. Here's hoping it's just the developers and not a limit to the remote.

Regardless, I didn't tell my rommates girlfriend about this when she played it for the first time last night. she really thought everything she was doing was translating on screen. She loved it, maybe I'll just let her take it with her.

This was one thing I didn't realize to the full extent when I got my Wii. However, don't let that stop you from having fun. Stand up! Swing wide strokes in tennis! Go through the full motions while bowling! Swing for the fences in baseball! So what if it doesn't exactly look dignified. It's fun! Sure, your friend may not play like that, but so what? It's his decision. Let him play like he wants. You? You play like you want.

Please begin, I would like to try some of these games out. It doesn't work for Zelda, Wii Play, Wii Sports or Trauma Center (although TC doesn't really need you to have complete range of motion).

Depth? Like the distance between you and the t.v. and then having it move in a 3D space? Yeah it does that, if you didn't know. In the Photo Channel you have to "zoom" in with your Wii Remoe to enlarge say.... the color pencil you chose, the eraser size, and other things. The Wii can do 3D motion, it's just that not everything uses it. In Warioware you have to push the Wii remote into a hoop to grab a little puppet, and in some other games. So yes, the Wii remote senses depth.

It should be easy to calculate the distance if the Wii knows the speed the wiimote is travelling at and the time it's travelling in. It's just a simple distance = speed x time equation. Even if you take acceleration into account, it should be easy to calculate.

Why? Does something have to make a difference to be fun? Running around in circles doesn't make a difference to anything, but that doesn't stop it from being fun. If it doesn't make a difference, then why does it matter whether you use large motions or small. Maybe it's the small motions that are unecessary, and the large motions are the ones you're supposed to make. For some games, small motions don't work.

they really should have put difficilty, flicks for 5 yeare  oldss and realistic for ppl who want to play properly. It sucks even more in bowling when my 9 year old sister can get a score of 260

this sort of reminds me of guitar hero.  All my friends sit down and intently look at the screen all set in position like some sort of robot.  I on the otherhand am doing windmills, singing along, jumping off the couch, and doing tons of crazy stuff.  I lose almost everytime since there's alot of mistakes to be made when you're not facing the screen (and you don't own the game), but I have so much more fun.

Also I think movement depends on the programming in wii tennis it doesn't make much sense to focus on length since a 5 year old might not have enough reach, but it seems to notice length in trama center quite nicely.

this is true for, tennis, golf, baseball. they just use tilt and timing so it makes it very easy to play lasy. thought in the future they will change, rember wii-sports is just 5 tech demos.

It may also be true in bowling, I can't work out how to make it do it with out standing.

you can't do boxing with out doing aresonable amount of motion.
