At E3, Nintendo touted themselves as extending the market by appealing to non-gamers. But how much of it is really non-gamers, people who hadn't picked up a gaming controller or kb+m to game in their entire life?

Well which is it Nintendo. Pick one of these two.

1) You are appealing to non-gamers. Pooling resources away from your usual traditional titles to make things like WiiFit, WiiPlay, WiiSports. That's where your (I believe it is around) 8 million consumers come from.

or

2) You're non-gamers don't exist or exist in a small percentage. You had just gotten your sales from the existing PS2 market which is at 120 million.

So which is it Nintendo. Catering to non-gamers and abandon that 120 million PS2 market? Or is it that you actually aren't catering to non-gamers which you so tout at E3?

What does system wars think? Guys and Gals?

Wii is like the DS to me. Casuals get their games, and I get mine. If casuals wanna waste 50 bucks on a Nintendogs or Brain Training game, go ahead. Just give me SMG and I'm good.

Somehow it's impossible to do both. Nintendo, unlike a few individuals of this forum, don't have a one track mind. They'll do with the Wii what they did and are doing with the DS.

You don't seem to realize what made up the bulk of that "120 million PS2 market."

:|

On a side note, Nintendo chooses to makes an assload of money. How? By making games that cater to hardcores, casuals, and non-gamers. Even IF the "hardcore" titles were in smaller amounts, there are still enough games to satisfy, and even moreso for casuals and non-gamers as well, they outnumber us by huge numbers.

The bulk of PS2's market was from PS1. And PS1 had truly extended the market away from what the SNES had ever done. No one can deny that.

I think Nintendo's stragety is rather logical.

1 Hardcores are a SMALL minority of gamers. Thus Nintedo makes few hardcore games.

2 "Casuals" are the majority, thus most games are aimed at them.

3 Non-gamers are a minority as well, thus games aimed at non-gamers(people who never ever gamed before) are few. Such titles as Wiifit and wiisports.

From a business standpoint it is most logical.

However I would love them to give more love to people like me who enjoy a deep singleplayer experience.

Yes it could be both... for all we know, the Wii's fanbase couldbe evenly distributed between non-gamers and the PS2 owners

but Nintendo is reaching out to that non-gamer market, because obviously there are a huge amount of them.

Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and Brain Age for non-gamers. The big 3 for gamers.

Ganon_919

2.7mil GC fanbase, 2.7mil PS2 fanbase, 2.7 mil nongamers? I don't think it's that straight down the middle.

That article during E3 said 5%. Which is what I say as minimal. 400 thousand.

That's quite a few but a low percentage. Quite frankly, I don't think Nintendo is speaking the truth.

Wii appeals to everyone. I have a 360. My parents never even looked at it. They played a Wii at my cousins house and we bought one the next day. They are what you consider "Non-gamers". So I get the games I want (Zelda TP, SSBB, Metroid, etc.) This topic phails COW

I guess you missed the part of E3 where Nintendo gave stats regarding their userbase.

The casuals from the PS2 era are mainly young boys still, yet Wii has shown to be capable of appealing to both females and older audiences.

So there's your answer.

all they did at e3 was say how they got old people to play games and stuff like that. but why should they care? they're rolling around in money while old people and non-gamers play games and what are we supposed to do? settle for wii fit?

What you said has no value. It isn't an either/or situation.

They can attract casuals AND non-gamers. Total sales AND the demographic change clearly show that, both of which were addressed at the keynote.

karicha9

No, they did not give the percentage of which are non-gamers. They just had a few charts touting their "market expansion" when they really didn't specify where those numbers came from and if those numbers include people who played games before. They were just expansions from their own market. If they were actually expanding the market, they would have to topple PS2's 120 million mark first.

Connect the dots, yourself.

The market demographic (in both age AND sex) is different for the Wii than it has been for the total market, as stated by Nintendo in their keynote.

If you want to assume that ONLY non-gamers are on board, the number of females and older individuals playing regularly would be MUCH higher than what Nintendo reported.

If you want to assume that ONLY casuals from the PS2 are coming over to the Wii, then the demographic would be roughly the same as last gen. It isn't.

Therefore, it's a mixture of the two, meaning that Wii is appealing to casuals AND nongamers.

Where are the numbers that support your assertion? Yeah, what I thought.

All I have to go off of is the poll that Nintendo reported on at E3. Now, comparing those results with ones made previously by NPD regarding video game demographics, it's clear that the Wii is pulling in both casuals and non-gamers, not just one or the other.

yes thats really fair. lets use the sales for the wii when its been out for almost 9 months and how long has the ps2 been out? yea the ps2 had 120 mil user base on its 1st year. funny how you talk about how you use logic when that isnt the case.

NobuoMusicMaker

Very little resource gets pooled into making games like Wii Fit. Miyamoto says a game like Wii Fit only takes a few months of development.

Also the 8 million isnt non-gamers only. Hardcores do buy the system as well.

While I do wonder what it is that Nintendo's planning for '08, I highly doubt they're putting out all of their biggest titles this year in full knowledge of having nothing for next year.

In other words, Nintendo isn't going to blow its wad and then have another drought in '08. If they didn't have anything, they'd have just delayed one or two of the big 3.

You don't seem to realize what made up the bulk of that "120 million PS2 market."

On a side note, Nintendo chooses to makes an assload of money. How? By making games that cater to hardcores, casuals, and non-gamers. Even IF the "hardcore" titles were in smaller amounts, there are still enough games to satisfy, and even moreso for casuals and non-gamers as well, they outnumber us by huge numbers.

off topic- your sig is great on topic- you make a good point its just I wish we had an 08 blockbuster title to look forward to.

They have something big we just don't know what it is yet. We should get the speculation going, new IP, pikmin 3, F-Zero, kid Icarus, kingdom hearts nintendo style.

Wii is like the DS to me. Casuals get their games, and I get mine. If casuals wanna waste 50 bucks on a Nintendogs or Brain Training game, go ahead. Just give me SMG and I'm good.nyoroism

Totally agreed. Although there are some decent non gamer games on the DS as well like Brainage anda few interesting puzzle games, but at least the awesomehardcore games like Lunar Knights and Magical Starsign exist.

Nintendo has always been tight lipped about upcomming stuff. I can tell you one thing, expect Punchout wii to be hitting stores in the second half of next year. Its gonna happen.

Nintendo has a very simple strategy, grow the potential userbase while still catering to the old userbase. They have created a product and games that appeal to non-gamers, as well as "hardcore" games that appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers. So they are doing both, and their strategy has all but guarenteed that they win this generation.
