What's keeping them from doing this? It's so obvious.
Nintendo being nintendo, they could probably even negotiate like a preferred royalty rate from Sony, MS, and Apple.

I think the games would be worse if they did that. They should keep the status quo even though their consoles suck lately.
Nintendo has no competition whatsoever in the handheld market. They also make fantastic consoles (more reliable/well built ones too.)
I disagree. You may not have enjoyed the Wii but the console sold an incredible amount of systems, more than the 360 and the PS3.
And not talking about sales, we wouldn't have gotten an experience like Skyward Sword or other games. The latest Zelda title wasn't my favorite Zelda game by any stretch of the imagination but it was unique in its gameplay, something that we couldn't have had on other systems at this time.
I know what you're trying to say, that they should give up hardware. They are already a software company, and a hardware company.
Who makes the world most popular handheld gaming systems?

Apple.
It would make sense for them to quit the home console biz the most. It does make some sense to stay in the portable biz though.

Skyward sword could have been done better with the PS Move.
I'm not kidding. Especially the latest PS move with the dual lens and 60 FPS (old one was 30 FPS)
You know what I realize? Everyone wants to play Nintendo games but not on Nintendo systems.Shottayouth13-
Do you know what would pop sales?
Say that with every new purchase of a console, you get unlimited access to everything nintendo made 16 bit down.
It would be cheap and get lots of sales of it.

Apple, yeah right. I get your angle there. They make a device which is multifunction, and it is possible to use it for games. It's a good angle and I suspect you were being facetious, I lol'd.
I won't sugar coat this - Wii U's been disappointing for me. But, I still think the actual console and GamePad are great, it just needs it's library fattening up swiftly. I mean, really swiftly. Get the Wii U's library on a diet of pure butter only immediately.
You know what I realize? Everyone wants to play Nintendo games but not on Nintendo systems.Shottayouth13-Yeah, there are so many hypocrites in SW. They feel so insecure playing on Nintendo consoles. I imagine they get to their homes and say "Deep down I love Nintendo but I can say that to my dudebro "friend"! " Long story short, there won't be a lack of these threads ever.

So why limit such a model to only Nintendo? They're not desperate.[QUOTE="ChubbyGuy40"]ipads, iphones, and android smartphones say hello.Nintendo has no competition whatsoever in the handheld market. They also make fantastic consoles (more reliable/well built ones too.)

Ugh. You seriously think they compete directly against Nintendo's handhelds?
Chubbyguy is not wrong.
Edit: Does the Toyota Corolla compete against the Ferrari 599 for sales? No. They're in two completely different markets.

Any numbers to back up that statement?
Do you really think when Apple are designing their idevices they're really thinking about edging out the Nintendo 3DS? I'd be thinking about Samsung, Motorola, Nokia. Not to mention Android and Windows phone.

They aren't trying to compete directly with the 3DS but fact of the matter is that they are eating software sales for the 3DS in the west. Especially with those $0.99 games. Hardware sales for 3DS are still good but software is lagging due to ipads and smartphones in the west. I thought this was common knowledge. That may be but the Move may not have been here without the Wii, at least not this soon. I'm not at all saying Sony copied Nintendo, but I don't know if we would have had the motion-gaming renaissance we had without Nintendo sparking the flame. Another reason why, for now, Nintendo is still suited well for creating consoles and games instead of just being a software house.

So although these new mobile platforms might be a factor, it's not by a big amount. What's stopping them is that the hardware sales help fund the software sales, and vice versa. The release games on their own schedule. Being a 3rd party, they'd have to meet deadlines, and eventually quality would drop because of internal relations. What's keeping them from doing this? if they went software only..i dont think they would be able to charge ridiculous prices for thier products over a number of yearas..or am i wrong?campzorI'm not understanding the implication here. As a business, Nintendo exists to make money. Are you saying they are wrong to make money?

We want high end graphic consoles for 100 bucks and high production games for 20 bucks.

Nintendo could charge full price longer. Like Blizzard does.
Hardware ties up capital that could be used to run more software studios profitably. I expect them to suffer a loss because of hardware soon with the wii U
Plus, we saw the the 360 and PS3 how badly the big two lost money on them. Nintendo should have taken the opportunity to piggyback off of their investment.
[QUOTE="ChubbyGuy40"]ipads, iphones, and android smartphones say hello. An HTC One X Plus is more powerful than either the 3DS or Vita, and even though there are not a lot of games right now that support controllers, the library is rapidly growing. Playing mine with a Moga has pretty much replaced my PSP. The only downside is that the bluetooth connection for the controller drains the battery faster, but I think that in the future we will see more gaming phones that either connect to a controller via a connector strip (like a phone version of the Asus Transformer Prime) or a USB cable and universal mounting bracket. Once there's a true standard available for Android controller protocols, I think smartphones will finish eating whatever is left of the handheld market.Nintendo has no competition whatsoever in the handheld market. MK Wii is freaken full price still...That's not Nintendo overpricing stuff, it's the market. Pure capitalism. If there was less demand for the product, the price would drop so that the sales would remain stable. The only reason Mario Kart Wii (and other Nintendo games) retain their price is because they never stop selling. If other companies ever had a product which sold as well as consistently as Nintendo's stuff does, then they would never drop the price either (and you'd have to deal with crap like day one DLC, online passes, and sh*t like that, which you never have to with Nintendo).
