How so?

The PSP has no where near the developer favoritism, support, or hardware sales of the DS. 60 million to 130 million. Nintendo won that war.

Its like the Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs (oh my spurs!) Phoenix constantly gets knocked out of the playoffs by San Antonio for 4 out of 5 years.

What does Phoenix do? Work hard for years and make themselves better so that now, ugh they're gonna sweep my spurs.

The loser has to PROVE they can bring a better performance the next time, otherwise you expect what they already gave you.

Apple, yes the enemy of the future. iPad sold 1 million already. Not good enough? iPhone and iTouch combined, since 2007, over 50 million. In 3 years they've sold as much as the PSP has in 5 years.

And mobile developers are flocking to the apps store, sure it has problems (touch controls, no advertising) but its the best way for smaller independant devs to sell mobile games today AND best way for big companies to make small projects that are profitable to benefit more costly development of higher console games.

I'm not saying theres nothing iPhone or PSP can't offer that DS doesn't offer, they all have weakpoints. But Nintendo sure is taking notes of the Apps Store (3DS better have one), better unified online (like PSN on PSP), and more multimedia capabilities (PSP and iPhone) coz really a mobile device needs to be a pocket computer, consumers won't have it any other way guys

Just like with the Xbox/PS2 home consoles moved away from being ONLY about gaming to multimedia devices offering first DVD/CD playback, then downloadable movies/rentals, to Blu Ray players, to Web Browsers, Picture Slideshows, Picture editing, multiple OS installing, Netflix, etc. just like that the PSPs/DSs of the world will take on iPhone capabilites with FLASH on their browsers, and HTML browsing, netflix video streaming, etc.

i have seen adds for the ipod touch and phone promoting them as gaming devices. i think it was around the time of the iphones release. they were promoting some racing games and basic card games and such like. nothing on the ipad over here in europe since it hasnt been released yet.

Apple certainly have the market penetration. Whether they can really "sell" it to the standard iPhone user is debatable. Apple would need to do a lot of work to pose a serious threat, especially with the process that apps/games are approved in the app store.

and the DS was never advertised as the successor to the GBA so where's the new GB?

you can't always believe what companies say or don't say

if Apple didn't want a slice of gaming pie (which btw the iPod Touch IS marketed as a gaming device since, last fall i thnk) they wouldn't be supporting games on the apps store so well in ads

not to mention with the iphone OS 4 is going to have an XBL style community thing set up. I mean apple doesnt have to do that much to become a very serious threat to nintendo and sony. I mean it could be as simple as coming up with a dpad and buttons attachment that clamps ontop of the ipod or a wireless gamepad for the ipad and boom. Look out nintendo and sony

on the features..i dont agree that nintendo will, or even should, put every multimedia feature under the sun into the 3DS. they will have an appstore (an improved version of the current DSi Store) and i think there definately going to make it easier for small devs and publishers to make games on the 3DS. but nintendo know that if they take apple on head on then they will loose. just like they couldnt out muscle sony on sonys terms, there not going to be able to do it with apple. where nintendo are going to duke it out is where they have duked it out with the DS. the 3DS will have 3d that requires no glasses. itll probably be a lot cheaper than an iphone and will probably undercut the touch. itll be backed up by system sellers from pokemon to nintendogs and brain training. but i think the 3DS will still be a games machine with maybe a photo app like the DSI in there if there are cameras. now what ninty might do is allow other companies add new features to the system....from video and music playback to browsers and picture editing and such like. ninty will basically allow companies to make what they want and not just games. but out of the box...i think the 3DS will be just a basic game machine thatll play DS, DSi and 3DS games and have an appstore and maybe a browser.

How did Nintendo not outmuscle the PSP?

By getting more A/AA/AAA games for DS? how about outselling?

Sorry dude, Nintendo beat Sony at their own game with the DS/PSP gen war

No two ways around

Sony target the casuals just as much with the Hannah Montana ads, Buzz games, and other stuff (the whole real gamers play a certain platform is the most casual selling point i can think of, making it seem elite thus drawing people who are new to gaming to the "elite" form of gaming) they just failed

Both Nintendo and Sony targeted the Core and Casuals with the DS/PSP, only Nintendo did both better (with some help from third parties)

if sony cared about the PSP, they'd have helped third parties by now to gain interest in PSP development, most western devs don't develop for psp and most japanese devs make one game for PSP and two more for DS.

How about Sony not dropping the PSPs price in over 3 1/2 years though its been profitable for a long time?

A $99 PSP could've revitalized sales in 2007/2008, third parties would've been tempted to jump back on board and in 2009/2010 we'd actually have the PSP keep up with the stellar number of A/AA/AAA DS releases (instead of getting beaten down almost 3-1 on metacritic in 2008, 2009 by DS)

But Sony didn't care.

They knew the PSP reached its potential and didn't, for some reason, see reason to promote it more, they left it up to third parties to make some good games for it, but other than that sony gave us a handful of new Sony IPs for PSP while making a bunch of Buzz, Buzz Jr, Syphon Filter, Socom, Ratchet games

Nintendo has done some of that too, yes but they've certainly experimented with established IPs and created a lot of interesting new IPs on DS, perhaps more so than Sony who basically took PS2 concepts and put them on PSP with clanky face button controls (other than Patapon and LR)

they outsmarted sony on the PSP. the DS itself has less features and a lot less horsepower than the PSP and yet its kicking its backside. they didnt play sonys game and get dragged into a hardware and features race. ninty made dedicated gaming hardware and games suitable for a handheld and supported 3rd party devs..thats what ninty do. there going to do the same for the 3DS against apple. the app store has a big head start, ninty arent going to rely completly on their 3DS store to compete because if they do that then there going to lose. if ninty release a handheld that has every feature under the sun and costs as much as an i pad or iphone then they will loose. but if nintendo release a handheld with the same or more horsepower than an ipad (not alot more..just an edge) with 3D and a few basic extra features, back it up with good promotion and, of course, games and release it for

Apple has some things to worry about too.

Google's Android overtook the portable Apple OSX just this last week in marketshare.

edit: forget if Android is a specific phone...or that Google's OS is also called Chrome OS for portables.

I think you have a good point but that's sort of confusing. Google's Android OS recently overtook Apple's iPhone OS in the market. There are now more phones sold that use Android OS then iPhone OS. Android 2.2 OS>iPhone OS 4 Incredible> iPhone 4G or whtv it's called. The iPhone will eventually fail like Max OS X did. I'm not worried. Though I do agree that Apple is the enemy of the future. When Apple dies we'll start advancing much further.

Apple has some things to worry about too.

Google's Android overtook the portable Apple OSX just this last week in marketshare.

Android and Chrome OS are two diffrent things, or else we talk about Linux (thing that SW do like much too) that both UIs run on... since they only UIs running on Linux :p

Oh and they probably happy that they have matchable compatision, without iPhone things would look waaaaay diffrent
