Nintendo's online philosophy basically consists of "Who plays games online anyways?".

"We're very serious about online, we have Pokemon"
thery don't care about online because they're not targetting 14 year old shut ins like their competition
and that's fine and seems to be working for them. not my cup of tea though

now that is one hell of a challenge.
Us Americans will win everytime. :P

So, I take it their "target" does not like to chit chat with their friends? The SAME friends they sent their Miis to?
Please, this is the dumbest thing they could have done. Don't defend a stupid move.

Wow, what an insightful observation. "14 year old shut ins" are the only people who play online nowadays?

If people like you are going to be typing or talking in my online games, I'd rather there not be any chatting functions at all.
Most of the people that populate the online gaming community are either very, very stupid or very, very young.

Not really, but that's a hell of a lot of them. Look at CoD4 or Halo 3, for example.

No those crazy Japanese would be able to do it about 10X better than us.
They'll be too busy playing their cell phone games.

Um, not really. Have you ever played a game with a mute function?

Not a problem on PC.

Honestly, if the Nintendo fans don't have trouble TYPING out messages, a simple mute button should not be an issue.
Why are people making such a big deal about this? Brawl doesn't support any text or voice chat either (except for the little messages you can assign to taunts when you're brawling with friends only). Now all of a sudden because it's Mario Kart and it's already being criticized, this is a big deal?princeofshapeir
A lot of sheep bring up the "Free Online" point. When it shouldn't be, sine it does not have ANY features similar to what you are comparing it to - Live.

Demetri_OS
Their target audience is non-gamers. People who are intimidated by traditional controllers with complex interfaces. Are you seriosusly trying to claim they give a crap about playing online?
I'm not defending a stupid move because given the nature of the Wii it's not particularly stupid. What's REALLY stupid is claiming that a casual focused party game console suffers a lot from a lack of extensive online functionality, but it's to be expected from a fanboy like you

I was exaggerating for effect but it's not exactly news that traditional consoles are targetted towards adolescent males. stop getting so upset

Wut? They gave us an option to communicate online they didn't have too you know, I prefer it to all the 13 year olds cursing when they lose a game or get cocky like in FPS off live. Nintendo is slowly working their way to getting an online service and I expect Voice chat sometime down the line but if not this gen that is fine by me too.
Text while you race?Ragnarok1051if i cn do it on the highway at 85 i should be able to do it here no problem

I still prefer to listen to voice chat anyway, in the hope that there is a smart person out there. And anyway, I enjoy throwing popcorn at my computer when I listen to idiots talk.
Seriously, though, I do think that this is kind of lame, but in the long run, at least there is some form of chatting, albeit a slim one.

If Sheep really are comparing Wii online to Live, they're pretty stupid. The only selling point I see are the Virtual Console, the lack of monthly fees, and it being able to do things that your computer can already do better.

I wasn't getting upset I was just commenting on your generalization. BTW, I only play online games on PC where the annoying kids are few and far between.
The Wii's online is barly an improvement over the gamecubes.Relyswasnt aware gamecube had online:lol:
cept phantasy star
Kinda lame cant even trashtalk my buddies after pwning them in a raceEPaul
Agree. But no reason to complain about how bad the Wii would be at online now. If we felt like it should be an issue for Nintendo to look at, we shouldn't have supported the product until they did better.

People already complained about no voice chat in SMASH. It was a problem then and its still a problem to some people (including me), although its not a big deal, it would be nice to chat to friends while playing with them when they are not right next to you. (Otherwise its like playing against the computer)

and yes PC gaming rocks (although I don';t play much online).
[QUOTE="Dreams-Visions"][QUOTE="Relys"]The Wii is barly an improvement over the gamecubes.Relys
fixed that for ya.
Actually, I think the gamecube was better.
Sucks that it didn't sell better, We wouldn't have the Wii if Nintendo would have done ok competing on graphics last gen.
well its an improvement over no chat. so i assume u just put a USB keyboard in the back and off u go? and please tell me they havent tied text chat too friend codes (ie if ure playing a random game..u cant chat to anyone). if they implement a system like that then ill fly over to japan and slap iwata-san over the head with a newspaper.
i know its free so i dont expect miracles. what i do expect is a way too comunicate effectively in a game (otherwise whats the point?) and a reliable service. now they do have the latter sorted (ive found the servie to work quite well anyway...if a little slowly in places) but coms needs some serious work. the ability to use a keyboard is a step foreward (and if this was an MMO or somethign that we were talking about then keyboard only would be fine) but for kart, its almost useless. ya cant type while driving unless u want to loose the race. ive tried typing in trackmania...it doesent work for racing games.

Technologically...relative to the other systems out at the time, it was drastically superior to what the Wii is in 2008 relative to the competiton. Though I could never get used to the controller with my bigger hands.

sheep crack me up so much
you do realise that the Wii software library is destined to obliterate the Gamecube's?

Yeah, the big problem wasn't that. (RE4 looked amazing). It was the bad 3rd party support and online... Sorta like the Wii! The big difference with the Wii is they made it appeal to casual gamers so they could get away with it.
I really did love the gamecube though.

Lol its cool :)... I do know what you are talking about though I used to play a lot of Halo 2 and there were quite a few people online that tried to ruin everyone else's experience, but there were also a lot of cool people too.
