GoNintendo/Nintendo Life

Say what you will about cloud-based gaming, but the fact that we can play Control: Ultimate Edition on our Switch consoles with cool next-gen features like ray-tracing is something to be celebrated, and with more major games on the way, this approach could see the Switch's library expanded in interesting ways.

However, not everybody is invited to this cloud-based party, it seems. Our Australian correspondent, Liam Doolan, has noticed that Control (downloaded from the North American eShop) is rendered unplayable in his part of the world.

Control – and Hitman 3, which is also a cloud version – both require stable and strong internet connections to funnel all of that data to your Switch console (as well as send back your inputs to the server).

As suggested by Australian site Vooks, that infrastructure might not exist in many parts of Australia (xCloud and Stadia aren't available down under, either) – but another issue is that the servers pumping out this data are most likely regional, and so if Control hasn't been officially launched in your country, you won't be able to play it – even if you download the game from another eShop region.

Dear Nintendo, and other developers. Why did you even bother? Especially when in other parts of the world (such as the United States where politicians are screwing with our net) where the internet is not up to snuff?

Streaming is here to stay. Its time for the cave dwelling type gamers to accept this reality. Its not going to eliminate traditional gaming, just be appended to it.

So you're saying that it's better if nobody can play than if some people can't due to issues beyond Nintendo's control?

Not like there aren't other, BETTER alternatives to play Control. Not on the Switch if they are going to go this VERY restrictive route.

Instead of moving to another country, Australians should vote for a government of their liking. If not, they get the government they deserve whether they like it or not. Whining on problems will not get anything done as it is nothing but all talk and no action.

There is no better country, if you lived here you would know that, oh and this shit doesn't work in places in the States, so.

In other news I hooked my Stadia up again and it's working a little better... so it's about time they are starting to make some strides in the right direction.

Then they can use one of those alternatives. I don't see how removing an option benefits anyone.

@Pedro: Its not here to stay, at least in any major way. Even gamers arent dumb enough to fall for the BS that is streaming.

Both? Nintendo for even thinking of testing streaming out when internet is nowhere near stable across the world and Australia (and any other country, like the US and butchered Net Neutrality laws) for any BS they pulled.

But in some parts of the world, online is pretty good, so it makes sense for those places.

That's not happening. I've lived in various parts of Queensland and yeah....the internet was shit. 3rd world level. They know it's bad.

First it was digital upsetting you and now streaming. We now have Xbox, Sony, Nintendo, Google and Amazon game streaming services. Must be rough being left behind. 😂🤣

I just tried Control on my Switch and it ran flawlessly smooth. I have never seen such amazing graphics on the Switch.

I tried both the performance and graphics options and they both ran flawlessly.

I do have a 1gb unlimited connection and 5G is almost everywhere in Hong Kong and others will have a different experience. But I can certainly see how cloud gaming is the future.

Anyhow I am truly impressed with Control Ultimate Edition in Switch.

I hope more games that are well above Switch specs will arrive.

I live in the US and have 200MB fiber internet and Control ran perfectly fine on my switch, even over wifi BUT

The game DID NOT look sharp, the picture was fuzzy and it felt like watching a Netflix movie with all the artifacting in the stream. It's not comparable to playing natively on a PS4.

It's good enough to play ( I had no issues with input lag or stuttering), and if you don't have a PS4, X1, or PC it's better than nothing....i guess.

It's not Nintendo's job to decide if your internet is good enough. Stop whining that they're actually trying to be on the cutting edge of tech, for once.

@Star67: That’s true, it did not look very sharp, but that’s probably due to the 720p screen.

Either way, it was mighty impressive. There is no way the game could run on Switch hardware without the cloud doing all the processing work.

It would great to see more ports of games from MS and Sony running via cloud on the Switch.
