First off, I don't own a PS3. The system doesn't have enought exclusive games to justify the price yet. I'm no fanboy.

However, people who are whining about the 40 Gig PS3 not having BC need to take a step back and look at things again. Let's go through some of the reasons that the 40 Gig not being BC is a good thing!

1. Almost nobody used the BC feature. Studies done by Sony showed that the BC feature was though cool by everyone but almost never used by anyone. I guess that's since most people iether don't bother playing last gen games, or use the PS2 for them. Losing it isn't that big of a deal for most people.

2. There's still a BC PS3 SKU out there! Just because the 40 Gig doesn't have BC doesn't mean that you can't get the 60 Gig or the 80 Gig! The 40 Gig is designed as a budget PS3, and as such they had to remove rarely-used features, like the card slots and the BC. If you want BC, get the regular PS3!

3. It allows the 40 Gig to be sold cheaply. A huge barrier to purchase for most consumers has been the price. Sony can only lower the price by removing expensive stuff from the console. This price sells consoles, which sells games, which means more people to play with, more games to play, and more exclusives. Current PS3 owners benefit too!

4. It lets Sony use that money for better things. Sure, BC is falling by the wayside, but now Sony can reallocate those resources towards PS3 game production, increasing the feature set through firmware updates, and improving Home. Still can't forget that price!

5. It pushes people into the next gen. By issuing a new console with a lower price that only plays PS3 games, the consumer will buy PS3 games and join the next gen community.

6. It helps Blu Ray. Selling more PS3s means selling more blu ray players, which means sony's format looks better and better. If blu ray wins the format war, then all of a sudden the PS3 looks much more attractive to consumers and companies alike.

7. It makes SOny more compeittive. By lowering the price, Sony can get more compeititve with microsoft and nintendo. Competiiton is healthy in a free marketplace and means that you'll see more and better games, features and prices from all three consoles, not just the PS3.

While it does annoy that there is no BC in the 40 Gig, it's frankly not that big of a deal. If you want BC, but the regular PS3. All the advantages I've outlined above should get you to think about how nice it is for you that Sony's released a 40 Gig PS3.

One question since I don't really come to SW as much as I use to...

I find it rather funny that at the release of the PS3 one of Sony's hyping machines was that the PS3 only had 1 sku. Now how much do they have? 4? 5? wasn't there a 20 gig that got canned?

No BC on the 40 gig is a very bad thing.

My PS2 broke, i was in the middle of some games. I was really in need of BC. I'm more tempted to buy a PS2 at this point. :?

Errr, then get a PS2 then...there dirt cheap, or just save up for a 60gig model. Fact is, theres a cheaper version out there, wasn't the Pricepoint the biggest problem with the PS3?

Now thats been fixed, so we still have complainers? Geez.

While I can't really argue with your logic (I use BC, but if it weren't there, I wouldn't be too angry), what's irritating is having to listen to months of crap from Sony fanboys, only to have them pull an immediate about-face when word comes down from the mothership. I'm getting dizzy from all the spin lately (rumble is last-gen, oops, I mean next-gen rumble, wait, you mean it's the same rumble as the DS2?) from Sony and their defense forces/protection groups/etc..

PS2 can't upscale the games into HD.

If you're going to buy a system just to play the ps2 games, I'd say go with the ps2. And then save up for the cheapest ps3. You say you're in the middle of ps2 games, so I doubt you'd go out buying tons of ps3 games anyway.

The only point that I fully agree with is #3 (the price coming down). Other then that, it cant be a good thing that a system is missing a feature.

That is like saying its a good thing the 360 dosn't have a hd dvd player as standard, the only advantage is the lower price.

What if I'm on a budget and I don't own a PS2 but I'm interested in playing some PS2 and PS3 games and want a PS3? Don't tell me go buy the $600 PS3 or buy a PS2. Not having BC is crap. They could have easily include it since it's just software emulation.

I have an original 60 gig PS3 so it's not a problem for me.But I gave away my Ps2 to my brother after getting the PS3 because I deemed it useless.Remember when cows made fun of lemmings for spotty BC? No BC would be ridiculous.

Nope. Sony said the "core value" of their PS3s are BC. Downgrading is always a bad thing. And even starting at $400, the PS3 starting price is still the most expensive starting price for a console. Better to JUST WAIT. And remember Sony can put BC in the 40 gigs they just don't want to. After its all said and done, you'll only have the 40 gig and 80 gigs, bad choices.

No. Taking out a feature like that is never a good thing.Maybe a lot of people don't want to use it. But no one was complaining that it was there. It just annoys those of us who want to use it.

I agree they should release a patch on the firmware that turns off the BC feature in every PS3 model.

I would be devastated without backwards compatibility... I own over 70+ PS1 and PS2 titles, and the sole reason I purchased a PS3 was due to the death of my PS2 (had it for 6 years and i abused that thing), I have so many games i have yet to beat... I was really tempted to purchase a 360... however with the death of my ps2... the choice seemed rather easy... I saw no point in purchasing 2 consoles. Honestly... it really does irritate me when people cry about how the ps3 is lacking games... sure the there may be a lack of ps3 titles... but c'mon i play more ps2 titles than ps3 games... I just bought bully, Psychonauts and Persona 3 just the other day... now tell me i'm bored with my ps3...pfft.... In addition, when i first purchased my ps3 I did figure part of the $600 I would spend would cover the cost of purchasing a new PS2.... exactly the same mentality I used when purchasing a PS2 (since I did not own a PS1... I chose the N64 back then....).

anyways here the top 3 games I play on my ps3 currently.... 1) Persona 3 2) Warhawk 3) Pro Evolution Soccer

I'll admit that a lot of the points led into one another, but they are different. It pretty much all boils down to Sony having more resources for its gaming division, and that the 40 gig can now cost so little. The fact that sony has all of those additional resources for its gaming division means a lot of great things.

Frankly, the BC is _generally_ a little-used feature. I understand that some people want to play PS2 games on their PS3, and to them I say buy any of the other SKUs out there. Sony's not screwing you by introducing a low-end PS3. It's selling you a PS3, PS1 and PS2 in the 20, 60 or 80 gig models.
