Halo 3 is smashing every single record out there. Not only game records but it has became the entertainment launch in history. The halo franchise has truly became the new star wars. I have never seen so much press coverage on any game out there. Master Chief has even out classed icons like mario by becoming the first ever character to be immoralized in madamme tussauds. Where ever the halo name appeared, it was a success. From novels to toys. Is there any game that can do that? No way. Halo may not the best game out there, It doesn't need to be. Star wars was never the best film series. Neither do harry potter books have nobel prize. But still it's there overall appeal to the mass that has made it the BIGGEST GAME FRANCHISE OF ALL TIME. The video game predates anything else Nintendo has done with the franchise, including the anime series (which was based on the video games). Pokemon is first and foremost a video game franchise.

And while Halo is a huge franchise in the business, it's not the biggest. Not in sales, not in global appeal. When the Xbox franchise has only really touched somewhere around 50 million units, how can it compete against something from past generations, handhelds or the PC.

Take the numbers for what you will. I have always found that VG's software totals are very accurate. Software totals are easier to tally than hardware.

STARCRAFT has the most fans worldwide than any other video game franchise, and by a far margin. You could also argue the fact that WoW is EASILY the most successful franchise in gaming history. With almost 10 million subscribers paying a monthly fee, WoW makes more money in a few months than all the halo games combined.

As far as console games go though, I would give Halo the nomination right after GTA and MGS, which have been around for a much longer time. I think the Halo franchise is going to continue, especially after the success MS just had. I'll Guarantee anyone right now that Bungie is already back at the drawing board for Halo 4. MS would be absolutely foolish not too.

How is my sig hypocritical :?? I hate Microsoft, but I do like some of their products. I owned the original xbox, and I loved it. You do not know a thing about marketing if you think that advertisements do not work. I GUARANTEE that not as many Halo 3s would have sold without Microsoft advertising it EVERYWHERE!

umm....pokemon seems pretty huge but hey, what do i know. also i hear final fantasy manages to push a couple of consoles whenever it's released.....once again, don't take my word for it. i'm sure nothing is as big as halo. now excuse me while i go for a casual stroll to my local gamestore and take my pic of the normal edition, special edition, or legendary edition...on second thought, no rush.

starcraft is practicalyl korea's national sport, pokemon has sold more copies than halo will, mario was the face of all gaming for a while, they even made a movie to advertise super mario bros 3 (I'm sure you werent around for that one) WoW has 9 million users and rakes in $1.62 billion a year of supscription fees alone.

So what :?. It is a mediocore sequel to a fantastic game that has not lived up to the hype. Last time I checked, GTA invaded politics, so that means that if the GTA series sold more than the Halo series, and also invaded politics, then that means that Grand Theft Auto is the actual king. That is the GTA effect.

Here on Gamespot andalso on IGN, they have "Halo launch centers". I just noticed IGN's, because it's right in the side bar along with the reviews etc.

Halo 3 is $60,$70, $130....vs a movie that is $5-$15....so...

For every 1 copy of Halo 3 sold, 5-12 Movie tickets have to be sold...

Umm...G4 had a WHOLE DAY DEDICATED TO SAN ANDREAS...12 Hours of Gameplay footage...same for halo 2 i think...and a couple of other games...
