"We want players to focus on the joy of the action instead of getting to each game course. We wanted to make it as accessible as possible and as easy as possible for the players. Also because we're going to incorporate a number of different stars and conquering all the stars is going to be one of the most challenging missions for the player, we want them to understand as easy as possible where they should go next and which places they should go back to in order to get access to the remaining stars." - Shigeru Miyamoto

This isn't really a negative or a positive for me. I mean the hubs in Mario 64 and Sunshine were awesome, but SMG one was really lacking. Would of been better if they just improved upon it. Also seems from this that it is more of an expansion pack then a full sequel. But that is fine, and I really think everyone expected that.

I always had a lot of fun messing around in the hubs of the 3D Mario games. In all honesty though, I could care less.

Considering that the hub in SMG was so dull, it migh as well have not been there. I don't see this being a problem.

Didn't care for the hub world in Mario 64, and honestly Sunshine was the only mario hubworld I like :? So I'm fine with no hub world. I want to hear the part where there are more challenging levels though. Also this game honestly never screamed out major sequel to be honest. Alot of it seemed like stuff they already did in Galaxy.

The hubworld in SMG was terrible, but I would of at least liked them to add a better and bigger hubworld like there was in Sunshine and Super Mario 64, a lot of the fun in both of those games was traveling in the hubworld

Shame Nintendo, I would have figured you would take the high road and improved on it, not completely abandon it. Seems like laziness me thinks.

Yeah, but that's Bioware, the exploring in the original Mass Effect was crap. This is Nintendo and Mario we're talking about here, and 3D Mario's always had a great exploration element in their hub worlds, with the exception of Galaxy, and now they're getting rid of it entirely, that to me is laziness.

I'm kinda disappointed by this, but the game will still be amazing. And according to Nintendo, better off for excluding it. Maybe they could have improved upon it instead of scrapping it entirely?

This is probably the first real sequel of a Mario game (along with NSMB2) that re-uses an existing theme/ game sty|e. Hence, the feeling of "expansion". I'm sure it will be all gravy :). Though I'll admit, my first impressions last E3 were: "wait, it looks exactly the same".

Wow, I am surprised at how complacent you guys are about this bit of news. Just because the hub world was poorly done in Galaxy is an excuse for them to take it away altogether as opposed to making a better hub world? Streamlining my ass.

On other sites, Miyamoto is also quoted as saying, "You can think of it in terms of something similar to Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where you will have a rather convenient map to navigate." If it is indeed like Super Mario World's hub and has plenty of unlockable secrets and changing terrain, then the news might not be so bad. But if the hub looks like that image you posted, then I am not going to be very pleased.

I liked the hub world in Super Mario Galaxy. It wasn't the most fun to explore, but I at least appreciated the more subtle touches :( Personally, I didn't notice it until my second playthrough. I'm not surprised they dropped it to streamline the experience, though, as SMG 2's meant for the veterans of the first.

I'm not sure what could be improved, to be honest. >.> Once you find all the secrets of any world, that's it. The only reasonable way to improve hub worlds, as far as I'm concerned, is to make it 'evolve' at a more steady pace, but there's a point where it's evolution is so slow that it becomes unnoticed and unappreciated.

This one time, I agree with you completely. :P

Half of the fun in 3D Mario's came from screwing around in the hub world and experimenting. They better make that world map ****ing amazing and the levels better be even more ****ing amazing because otherwise it will feel like SMG Level Pack or SMG 1.5.

That's the point though, it doesn't have to be needless since they've proven many times that they can make a good hub world with great exploration. In actuality though, this decision is probably what made them able to make this game so fast, so in that respect I'm glad they did it, but still I don't agree with it.

And this brings me back to one of my biggest problems with Nintendo this generation and how they really aren't utilizing their talented developers to their fullest potential. Just how accessible do they plan on making their games and at what are the trade-offs they are willing to make at the expense of their long-term fans? :|

I liked the hub world because you couldn't get lost, and you just keep going to the next level.

It will probably be better however they do it.

One of my favourite things about Super Mario 64 was exploring the castle. This makes me think I'll like this one even less than the original. I guess they didn't want to either copy SMG's hubworld or spend the time/money making a new one.

I thought Nintendo was so well known for being forward thinking, and all about coming up with new and revolutionary ideas? This is exactly the opposite to the general strategy they have been following since the days of the NES.

It really comes down to nintendo being a damned if they do damned if they don't type of company. Again I point to my ME2 example. Sure bioware couldve made the exploration alot better...but they didn't. They cut it from the game and focused elsewhere. There's really no use pissing and moaning about what could've been in the game. Especially if the end product is awesome

I suppose the thinking behind is it that a hubworld wouldnt be necessary and, especially because of the complaints about the last one, they just scrapped it.

personally, I would have liked a revamped Peach's Castle, with obervatories in it where Mario can choose to explore.

I mean, what is the story going to be in this one? I know Mario games arent popular because of the story, but what context is going to be given? If the goal is to rescue Peach, who has kidnapped her, why are we in space again and where is Rosalina?

The ending to SMG was a bit... weird. For them to do away with the hub eradicates the context of the game. The world map needs to be something so much more than the image in the OP, otherwise its just going to be selecting challenges.

Apart from the fact where Nintendo wouldnt be damned at all if they included a hub world, even if it wasnt on par with 64. I mean, who is going to complain about what boils down to an extensive level select screen? Its more irritating that it isnt included, because it provides context for the game. Without it, what is the point in collecting all these stars? Personally, I liked the story in Galaxy. It was sad and melancholy and there if you wanted it, and the hub world really helped create a new scape outside of the Mushroom Kingdom.

This idea only works if Nintendo is actually restricting their developers. For the past gen, Nintendo has been using their system's weird ways as an excuse for letting their developers to do whatever they want. Otherwise, it would be like Activision, forcing their developers to do the same thing over and over again, year after year.

The hub worlds are part of the gameplay of the series. It's like taking out hills in the 2D Mario. Just like no point in jumping without hills, there would be no point in exploring without a place to explore.

Or maybe you shouldn't be so quick to assume things and perhaps I'm actually concerned justifiably and in fact others might be concerned as to this decision as well and Mario isn't the greatest thing since Jesus and can actually have flaws?

The hubworld in SM64 was great. The hubworld in SMG was stupid, although the red star was only accessible there. As long as they actually let you use the red star in different levels this time, I'm fine with this.

The hub worlds in 64 and Sunshine were terrible, as far as I'm concerned. I actually liked Galaxy's hub world, because it kept the focus on the levels, not getting to them. I like this decision, for the same reasons as why I liked Galaxy's hub world.

Tedious music? Having to use the same platforms? The point of the hub worlds is to be able to explore and have multiple paths. In all 3 3D Mario games there were more than one way to get to your level. And the music for any of them has never been tedious.

Hub worlds area pain in the ass so I don't care. Most fun I had with a hub was in the Spyro the dragon series (except 3, those hubs sucked) and that was becase they were basically levels in themselves with cool themes. Lack of hub doesn't bother me. It takes to long to get places in hubs imo.

Wow, this is the first opinion I've heard that is literally wrong and refuse to discuss. Comet Observatory had some of the most beautiful music to ever grace gaming period.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Seriously... just cancel the game. who cares anymore... God. The hubworlds where like my favorite parts about sm64 and sunshine

Is it really that much of a deal breaker? I mean the hub in SMG 1 was barely even there, but it didn't stop the rest of the game from being awesome

[QUOTE="princeofshapeir"][QUOTE="Willy105"]I think this is a bad idea. I don't want 2D Mario, I want 3D Mario.ActicEdge

And I don't want to have to jump up to the same platforms every time I start the game and waste two minutes listening to the same tedious music.

Wow, this is the first opinion I've heard that is literally wrong and refuse to discuss. Comet Observatory had some of the most beautiful music to ever grace gaming period.

Agree with this. But like others said, bad hubworld< no hubworld. Is it confirmed that there are 120 stars?
