I recently bought a one-month subscription to XBOX-Live. Why? So I could download the Burnout Paradise demo without having to wait a week. Online isn't even remotely necessary for me.
Hardly, both consoles have great games with solid SP, although I'd reccommend renting titles like CoD 4 instead of buying. That said I'd give the PS3 the slight edge when it comes to offline capabilities; the online isn't as robust as XBL and fewer PS3 games are built around online (Uncharted, Heavenly Sword MGS4 etc).
I don't really know about the PS3. But if no online for the 360, I'd say it;s still worht a purchase. Just some game aren't worth getting, some games wont be worth paying more than a certain price and some games are uneffected. Games like Mass Effect, Tomb Raider Legend, Bioshock, Oblivionand Assassin's Creed are not online compatible, so having no live would not matter. Some games rely heavily on online like Gears of War, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. All three are great games, but with out online I'd say you shouldn't even pay more than thirty bucks for em. And in Call of Duty's case don't even bother cuz it's only five hours long. A few games are built on online like Final Fantasy XI and Phantasy Star Universe... YEah don't even look at them if you don't plan on getting live.
