There's no denying that some of the most addictive games out there are MMOs. But if you find it frustrating that you can't have them on your beloved PS3 and Xbox 360, blame Sony and Microsoft. According to Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online MMORPG Star Trek Online captain Craig Zinkievich, the two publishers don't understand console MMOs, making it difficult to bring the games to their respective systems.

As far as console power goes, no problemo. The PS3 and and Xbox 360 are well-equipped with the right stuff to run MMOs. The problem lies, according to Zinkievich, is that Sony and MS don't quite get the business side of console MMOs. "When it comes to the business, I'll be honest, the business part of bringing MMOs to consoles has been really sticky," Zinkievich told Eurogamer in an interview.

Trying to get Sony, trying to get Microsoft to really understand MMOs; really understand what needs to happen for MMOs, and then figure out all the business aspects of those games, has really been a difficulty for all of the MMO developers.

In fact, the only reason that Final Fantasy XI, the only MMO on the Xbox 360, was possible was because "so many exceptions were made." Zinkievich added that getting the the platform holders to understand the network technologies needed have been "the really big hangups".

For now, Cryptic hasn't announced which consoles will Star Trek Online be playable in, but the PC version is expected to come early next year.

;3 Guess they can't find the best way to milk as much money out of those monthly fees without pissing off the devs, eh?

There are plans for MMOs you know?? FFXIV, DC Universe, and IIRC the Star Wars one (can't remember the name)

In the end, it's fine for me. I don't like MMOs.

There's been a lot of MMO's announced for consoles but cancelled, and I wouldn't be surprised if those turn out the same. (Well, except for FFXIV)

I don't understand why people would want MMOs on consoles to begin with. Those games are made better by addons, and MS and Sony sure know how to suck the money outta your pockets if you want DLC.

On top of that with addons comes more memory usage meaning you'll want to upgrade, but you can't do that on a console! Same goes with content patches and such that add more to the game. You will eventually need an upgrade if you want your MMO to last.

Seriously, just let it go. This genre is just another in the line of genres that are always superior on PCs.

FPS's are better on PC, but they sure are LOVED on consoles. I'm not a fan of MMO's either, but there's definitely a market for them on consoles.

Some MMOs work very well on console, for example Final Fantasy XI.

Compare the amount of buttons needed with MMO vs FPS and you would get the answer, also MMO is all about getting add-ons to improve your performance, I am gonna use the top WOW guild as an example.

At Blizzcon, they actually wiped a few times due to "not having our add-ons"

Unless they build a MMO with console in mind from ground up (Much like Halo was built with console FPS in mind, adding regenerating shield, auto aim, 1 button grenade etc) I don't think there's a point of importing MMO to console

From personal experience, console MMO is rubbish, having tried FF XI on the 360.

If playing console MMO's means me having to go through that play-online viewer non-sense consider me counted out. I'll stick to PC affiliated non-Aion MMO's

I don't get it. What don't MS and Sony understand? They both have broadband connections and ways to deliver updates, patches and DLC. I can somewhat understand needing exceptions from MS since they prefer everything to go through Live, but it's been done before and there's no reason it couldn't be done again. Sony, in particular, has quite a bit of experience with MMO's. So what is he expecting from them? Does he expect them to take care of all the monthly billing and customer service or something?

Most pc mmorpgs have pretty light hardware requirements. That's partly why they have been so successful.

I think the main advantage to mmorpgs on the pc is the keyboard for typing. But with FFXI we saw that it can be replaced by voice chat.

Everyone has at least a basic pc and has access to plenty of mmorpgs that can be played on an igpu. Who cares if very few come to consoles.

OP's article is pretty sparse on detail to be taken seriously. Seriously, the guy simply says that Sony and Microsoft doesn't understand. Doesn't really give any examples or evidence for this claim. Although we already know that LIVE does present issues when it comes to setting up paid services because of its closed nature but Final Fantasy XI showed it was feasible to run a paid MMO service. As for Sony, I have no idea whatsoever what they could possibly be on about. Sony doesn't even control the online functionality except for the PlayStation Store. Everything is decentralized very much in the same way as PC. There's no barriers between a game and the online environment. tl;dr disregard OP

Well Sony seem to have 3 of their own MMO projects for the PS3 as well as XIV, and some other PS3 MMO for Japan. So clearly they're making an effort for PS3 MMOs. Haven't really been keeping up with what MS is doing for 360 MMOs.

Sony sure screwed FFXI over back when they put out the PS2 Slim without hard drive support. FFXIV won't have that problem so it could very well become the first highly successful console MMO. We'll see.

Dead-Memories

The reason for the Play Online service was that at the time XI came out (crossplatform on ps2/pc) there wasn't really any kind of good unified network in place to use. Then when they added the 360 version, since all the versions were cross-platform together, it was necessary to use the same PlayOnline service to log in. I'm pretty sure that it has been stated that they won't be using the PlayOnline system for XIV.

Why on Earth would i ever play an MMO on a console when i always keep up to date with my Comp so its 100x better then consoles, and lets not forget the most important fact KB/M, which is the sole reason why MMO's fail outright on consoles. Also mods, which is a very close 2nd as to why MMO's fail on consoles. I will say this i would play an MMO on a console if i could get every mod, and could use KB/M, which basically means im playing on a PC.

This really isn't a very good article. I have a real hard time believing sony, who themselves put out several MMOs, has any misunderstandings about them. Sony may not be cooperative, but that's not a misunderstanding issue. I suspect is the same in the MS camp as they have their live structure, and are reluctant to break that structure just for the sake of an MMO.

Star Wars the Old Republic hasn't been announced for consoles and there doesnt seem to be any plans. Bu comeone dude yo have to look at this article seriously theres hardly any console mmos out there considering the overwhelming popularity of them. I mean even Champipns Online has been delayed for unspecified reasons, you have to wonder dont you.

You all realize that both the 360 and PS3 support standard USB keyboards, right? And FF XI on the PS2 proved that a controller works just as well, if not better, than a mouse.;)

Thats highly plausible considering the small userbase that your average console has in comparison to the PC, and the average attach rate for an MMO on PCs is astronomically low, even World of Warcraft. (10 million out of 200 million) Even if you were to get the same kind of wild success that WoW has on PCs, that would only translate to about a million sales, and the vast majority of MMOs never reach that kind of popularity.

So you wanna consolize MMO's ill pass. As for the person who stated that KB/M works on console MMO's basically FF11 thats great, but no mods= no deal sorry. Good luck getting MS/Sony to allow third party downloads onto their servers/systems, with absolutely no verification that they arent viruses, keyloggers, trojans.

[QUOTE="HuusAsking"][QUOTE="toxicmog"] Exactly, also you need a KB to play anyway due to the invnentorys of most games/key binds. You might as well play it on a PC.Fizzman

The servers would belong to the publisher not Sony/MS and there is no such thing as a virus that affects consoles.

DerekLoffin

Basically. The whole thing read like DC for a dev that wanted to shove the blame elsewhere. While we do know that the current policies MS has with Live have kept some MMOs away (most notably, FFXIV) Sony has several cross platform MMOs on the way and you don't hear those devs crying.

I prefer to play an MMO on a PC, usually. But I'm happy to know that if my PCs have problems running XIV well, my PS3 is available. While this dev tries to figure it out, SE will be getting my money.

That's not true. Consoles are basically modified computers. They could easily get viruses if hackers were given the opportunity.

Indeed. If it weren't for GameOS requiring signed executables and its web browser being so cumbersome and feature-limited, I wouldn't be surprised if people weren't trying to own PS3's already. Imagine having their computing power in your botnets. The thing with third-party games and their add-ons is that they represent potential holes in the walled garden. Walled gardens are only as good as their access points.

*shrugs* I think MMOs could work fine on a console platform. Only if you design the MMO for the console platform. *Not* with the PC in mind. Problem is maintining such a good portion of such a small userbase as subscribers, to justify an MMOs development for the platform. And thats where things get really hairy.
