2009 and 2010 are completely out of the question but sometime in 2011 or 2012?

I seriously doubt we wont see new consoles until 2015. I take comments like that as a grain of salt.
PS. Sega doesn't even com close to having the resources anymore to support their own console.
They can't even make a good Sonic game right now, why on Earth would they suddenly make a go for something that requires alot more than a Sonic game does?
If anything I think Sega would pair up with Nintendo IF they wanted to get back into the console business, otherwise I wouldn't count on seeing them make an appearance unless they suddenly start producing a fair amount of AA and AAA games to start pooling their funding together for such a project. Even then they'd need massive third party support (something they weren't ever that good at) and would be coming in between generations which would definitely hurt them considering most would hold out for next generation consoles (or at least wait to see what they offer) and most are already pretty well supported by what they have now. I can't really see Sega bringing anything new to the table at this point.
They could be PURPOSELY holding back for the next console.Sega will never make another console if they keep releasing this poor games

Tony-Baxter
But then where would the revenue come from

Because most of their games get AA/AAA when they're first party.
Ok, so what makes u think they will create aa/aaa games again? here is my answer: obviously, if they arent creating aa/aaa games anymore then the core employees left for other companies.i think sega should worry about fixing sonic first before they worry about consoles
idk what the hell they were doing after sonic adventure 2
as much as I'd love to see a new Sega system... and I do believe they could capitalize on this "gap" in this gen and next... it aint gonna happen... I wish it would... but it aint gonna happen...
My dream launch:
new Sega with Virtua Fighter 6, Power Stone 3, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Capcom vs SNK 3, Shenmue 3, Daytona New, Crazy Taxi 3, Sega Rally Revo 2, NBA 2K12, NFL2K12... :-D
If SEGA did want to re-enter the console race, they'd have to do it before the likes of Apple get on board. They may be better off developing a casual console with HD support to rival the Wii so in a way it's only going against one competitive system, not two or go handheld. It could work out well for them as the HD era' will have matured and become mainstream. If they ever do, of course.
Any comments of a 2015 target for new consoles is complete rubbish. I'd say Microsoft will want to get a new sytstem out within the next 3 years because the PS3 is going to build up enormous momentum when the price drops(not to mention reliability issues with the console nearly 4 years in) and I think MS will see a large drop in sales. It's a huge plus to be Blu-ray compliant as HDTV sales continue to increase but the price is a barrier. I doubt movie downloads will be major competition because broadband is too restricted and I imagine the majority favours physical media > (rented?) DD. ISP's seem in no hurry to actually make our connections unlimited, even though many state they are.
Also, a "life cycle" is how long the console is supported for, not how long it will be until the succesor is released. Look at the PS3 - released 2006 yet the PS2 is on a "10 year life cycle".
It's not going to happen, folks.
Personally, I think the best thing that could happen to Sega right now would be Microsoft buying Sega Studios Japan (who are still pretty lucrative) and give them the necessary funds for the likes of AM2, Amusement Vision and Smilebit to work independently again. That way, the fans are happy and Microsoft who, unlike Sega, actually know a thing or two about marketing take care of the PR side of things.
In addition, Microsoft benefit from this by expanding their userbase in Japan and having Sonic as an exclusive franchise. (demean Sonic all you like, he still makes a lot of money)
If only. :(
