Despitesome suggestionsthat Sony would show new hardware during its2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefingearlier this month, the company did not utter a word about thePlayStation 4. Explaining the console's absence from the show and Sony's wider thoughts about new hardware toMCV, PlayStation CEO Andrew House said gamers should not expect talk of the PS4 until major advances over the PlayStation 3 can be shown.

Sony isn't ready to show off the PS4 just yet, House says.

"The right time to talk about new advances in hardware is when you can demonstrate a significant leap on the current experience, and something that is going to be attractive," he said. "That remains our philosophy. Beyond that we have nothing to say at this point."

A recentanalyst reportpredicts Sony--and Microsoft--will have their respective future generation consoles on store shelves by the end of next year. Sony's PS4 is rumored to boast thesame graphics card as Microsoft's next Xbox, as well asmeasures to block out used games, though analystsdo not find this claim likely.

For more on the PS4, check outGameSpot's rumor roundup feature.

So it sounds like Sony is serious about the Playstation 4. They don't want to show it off until they are confident that they can prove to people it's a major leap. I think that Sony has the right mentality about their next game consoles.

So far for me, the Playstation 4 is the only console I have any intrest in. The WiiU does nothing for me and the rumors about the next Xbox are all over the place and I have not been very thrilled about Microsoft's direction with their hardware and 1st party games.

I couldn't get into the new Twisted Metal as much as I would have liked to. I want to get Starhawk, but I have more than enough games right now to keep me busy.

Nah man, cows were hyping those games and bought them by the millions. Sony has been drowning cows in exclusives this year (so I've heard)

Other than that I'm just interested in PC games this year and Halo 4 really.

Nah but Halo 4, Forza Horizon, Dance Central 3, Gears Judgement and Minecraft (multiplayer version) will do just fine. You know exclusives people actually buy. PS3 don't have any.

Sony holding back gaming...i see :?

360 and PS3 still impress, sure, but it doesnt change the fact that they are currently holding back PCs. Planetside 2, Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs PC, Unreal Engine 4, etc should be an incentive for MS and Sony to hurry up.

With Sony's First party being as strong as it is this gen if it continues with PS4 it's a done deal purchase. Though I am not a graphics whore I am glad Sony really wants to push hardware specs but I don't want to see PS4 release until 2014/15.

Why? A split between PC and console is good for both platforms. Consoles should run in their own race, not one in where they are always trying to play catch up with the PC.

But we both know thats not how it works.

Unfortunatly PCs and consoles run in the same race. At this point, PCs are like 8 times more powerful than any console, right? PC version of most multiplats, on the other hand, dont look 8 times better than console version. Most of them are a console version, running at a higher res and framerate.

Note that Crysis came in 2007. In 5 years very few PC games looked as impressive as it, obviously because most PC games need to be handled by 360 and PS3.

So they will make a very powerful system that over shadows the competition, it will be capable of handiling games that no other console would be able to, it will also have more graphic capabilities. Big devs will be drawn to it for it's power, allowing them to make games not possible on other systems.

And Sony is also getting a new architecture in the PS4, one that will be very easy for devs to work with. If devs decide to use the PS4 for primary multiplat development we might see a significant different between the PS4 versions and the 720 and Wii U versions, the PS4 versions would look vastly better if they took advantage of it's power.

Sony's strategy makes the most sound sense. It all comes down to pricing however, I don't care if it costs a little more than the 720 does, you get what you pay for. However I'm not paying $600, I would just wait for a price drop, thankfully Sony has learned their lesson.

Also keep in mind Sony has an amazing 1st party devs and games and you have one hell of a launch line up.

Another gen and the same crap from sony all over again. Just like this gen did not start until sony said so right? Meanwhile they went from runaway 1st place with the PS2 to fighting to try and not finish last this time. They are just setting up another "next gen dont start until we say so" with this comment because they know they will be late to the party once again. Does Sony think so little of its coustomers that they really expect people to think that no significant leap cant be made 7-8 years later?

They kinda have to at this point. Wii sales have spiraled downwards for months now, and they're dropping hard.

Umm....no sh!t. The Wii U comes out this year around holiday season, no one is buying a Wii anymore because the new one has been announced.

I think all he's saying is"We're waiting to see what Microsoft does and then depending on what they show, we will consider unveiling new hardware. However hopefully, it won't be for a while because we don't have the funds at this moment to do so". That about sums it up in a nutshell.

It would be nice if sony did something for devs then tossing them console that is so complex for no reason. Devs might end up making their games on it then importing. Then again microsoft is starting to put windows 8 in everything. The reason devs liked 360 because it was easy and similar to pc's

A lot of people couldn't tell the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD on a HDTV set. Still people wonder why they have to spend even more for a Blu-Ray that doesn't look any better than a DVD in their eyes.

It's going to take quite a showing to convince people to buy another consoles. Many gamers think graphics are fine the way they are. Even Nintendo hasn't bothered to try to sell the WiiU to the Wii audience because they know it would take something significant to get that market to move to their next consoles. Gamers are stupidly conservative when it comes to purchases.
