I said on another thread that SONY fanboys were in denial. I was asked why and here is the answer.

Simply what I mean is that from what I have observed the remaining staunch SONY fans remain out of pride, stubborness, and nostalgia. Blind brand loyalty. See they think that simply because they had a great experience in the past that this implies it will be the same every generation. Sony's console is clearly not the best this time around and yet it costs the most.Graphically it will never have a game that looks like Gears of War for example because you cannot get a game to look like Gears with only 256 mb of video memmory. Also I believe the trend of PS3 "exclusives" going to 360 will continue because SONY's dev kit is the most difficult( and therefore the most costly) for third parties to use. Also budgets for titles like MGS4 counted on SONY doing far better and having a greater installed base by this point so because of this I find it likely that Assassain's Creed and Devil May Cry 4 are the begining ofa trend where companies will develop for 360 because it is cheaper to use their user friendly dev kit and also will sell more games with the larger installed base. Let's face it. Buisinesses are out to make money and it seems like SONY only wants to buy limited exclusivity for their AAA games( by the way I still have seen not a single one of those from them yet) rather then permanent. Remember when they were hyping Assassain's creed as their great exclusive game. The truth was that it was multi-plat the entire time and SONY payed Ubi-Soft to keep the MS version a secret so they could trick their fans at E3. See Sony only has smoke and mirrors for their fans but Nintendo and MS seem to actually be delivering. Basically to me that means I would rather buy the cheaper system with better graphics and games.

As far as Blu Ray is concerned I don't see why people see this as such a clincher. If Blu-Ray wins then Ill want to wait until it drops to around 200 bucks and get seperate blu-ray player because watching movies on a gaming system just makes it wear out more quickly. Also Time-Warner among other companies has a dual disc with blu-ray on one side and HD-DVD on the other which costs the same.

Last Gen I owned all three because PS2 had the most/best games. I had Xbox because the graphics were the best. I had Gamecube because it had the best first party games. This time Im buying the best value. 360 has the best games and graphics at the best price. I know Wii is cheaper but I find the graphics are pretty much the same as Gamecube and it seems more like a party machine then a hardcore gaming console. I might get it someday because I love Metroid and Zelda but for now Im holding off.

So that is what I mean by denial. Last time around someone with PS2 could really say their machine had the best games it was obviously true because the library was much greater and larger then any other systems. Now they have been around for almost a year and still not one single AAA has surfaced and lets face it. Any game that costs that much to make like a AAA calibre will be one with a developer that wants to make money so multi-plat is the logical way to go. Expect SONY to pretend like its exclusive as has been their strategy lately but you will be burned when the truth comes out when you realize you could just play it on a cheaper system with the same and often slightly better graphics. This time the Cows don't have much to go on but past memmories and empty promises of the future. Currently they have nothing and it looks like that won't change any time soon. I think I'm gonna go play Halo 3. Peace.

I didn't read that, but if you see a Sony fanboy you can assume they prefer Sony's exclusives over the other two systems.

I stopped reading one you said the PS3 will never get a game graphically that looks good as Gears because of the"256 mb Ram". I was expecting an irrational blind fanboy rant from a thread with a title that claims I paid $600 for a PS3 just because it had a Sony logo on it. The TC failed to disappoint.

I only have 1 thing to argue.

everything else is true though... sad

256MB of ram can be remedied by the HDD standard in every console.

They can cache all the textures on to the HDD and just steam them off of the HDD when needed.

there fore providing more then 256MB of video ram.

Look at Oblivion PS3 version it does look better graphically the the PS3 version.

Why do you people have so much trouble with this? Exclusives push consoles. In 2008, the PS3 has one of the best lineups of exclusives I've seen since the ps2 debuted. MGS4, FF13, GT5. All 3 are multi, multi million sellers, and are the games responsible for the PS2's success. A 400 dollar PS3 to boot, and the PS3 can only go up from here. GT usually sells upwards of 10 million, FF sells nearly 10 million, and MGS sells around 5 million. These games are going to sell PS3's left and right. If you need more proof than simply my word, check out a timeline of PS2 sales, and games launched. When GT3, MGS2, and FFX released, the PS2 sold like crazy, eventually leading to the PS2's console domination in the end.

Once again we have another cow banking on past sucsess. This generation is an entirely new ball game and you can't just assume the PS3 and it's popular titles will be just as good as PS2.

brand loyalty is bad when it causes you to buy something because of the name printed on the product rather then the things you are actually getting for the money you spend.

Really dude? I wasn't about to waste my time reading that, but Yes I am brand loyal. I wanted to buy one gaming system and I am loyal to the PlayStation because of one game called GT. do you have a problem with that? 360 has some good games but does not interest me at all. Please stop posting this non-sense

There are some games that i've been itching to play on the PS3. Resistance and Warhawk being the main two and the only two i'd buy the console for. However, no console is worth $600. If the $400 rumor is true (and it's looking more and more like it is) then i'm willing to dish out the cash to play these games among a few others.

Some people prefer PS exclusives. Either way, the people that play all are the real winners.

I did not state that in every case brand loyalty was a bad thing. My argument was that it seemed to be the only real motivation for people to get a PS3 since it clearly is not the graphics or CURRENT library selling the damn thing. Of course there are also three games people seem to want to play, MGS4, FF13, and GT5....The first has been multi-plat in the past. The second has allready been rumored to be multi-plat this gen. The last I really don't care about because Forza is better and Project Gotham is coming out soon.

if you would take your fanboy glasses off to see the real picture, you would know that the guy is actually right. I am bought my playstation solely for GT, so there you go. I don't care if the game comes out in 2010. I will always wait for it plus I had it a good deal on my PS3. The game is luckly coming out in 2008 though. The guy is right in saying these big games will sell a lot of consoles. How can GT5 go wrong when 1,2,3,4 were all great games specially 1,2, and 3.

Alot of those titles did as well as they did because Sony had already won. The Xbox came out late. Most people had PS2's because it was the only show in town. Nintendo's console was much like the Wii is now but without the Wii controller. The games were exactly what the Wii sees today. the Xbox came out and was already way behind.

Developers made a choice.. Not enough consoles sold therefore the Xbox did not get the same support Sony did.

Now take that same argument and look at the PS3's position. It is dead last in consoles. the Xbox and Wii outsell the PS3 every week.. By atleast 2:1.. Thinking the titles of Sonys past that sold well will eventually help the PS3 is absurd. It will sell some consoles. But enough to catch the Wii and 360.. or even compete with them after the huge lead they have..

Sorry that is dreaming.

Can the PS3 do a fast write from the SATA controller to the GPU's memory controller without involving the SPE or its memory controller?  If not, your HDD caching plan isn't going to work very well.

The_Gamer81

Once again we have another cow banking on past sucsess. This generation is an entirely new ball game and you can't just assume the PS3 and it's popular titles will be just as good as PS2.

if you would take your fanboy glasses off to see the real picture, you would know that the guy is actually right.

Yeah I had all three systems last gen. That does not make me a fanboy. Back then each console had a unique and powerful reason to own it.

ps2 games

xbox graphics

gamecube first party power

this time 360 does everything ps3 does better for less money

wii is really cool but almost too different too compare.

When you bought the PS2 for GT you did not spend 600 bucks knowing that another system that cost less had better and more racing games. im saying you really can't assume things will be the same this time.

[QUOTE="L1qu1dSword"]That last comment pretty much covers Agent Fred's last question too. I guess I am a fanboy Fred....you just must have missed the part in my original post where I mentioned owning all three systems last gen.white_sox
last gen doesn't matter...remember?

I did not say it does not matter. I said it is not a crystal ball that tells you the future. I was using this to illustrate that Im not a fanboy but just someone who buys whatever I believe is best. Nice way to try confusing things man.

When MGS2 released, the PS2 had only sold 10 million. Thats hardly, "won". In fact, I would argue that the release of MGS2, and other exclusives when the PS2 was still weak, is what won the console wars. The success of the PS2 didn't cause the success of the exclusives, the success of the exclusives caused the success of the PS2. Exclusives sell consoles, they always have, and they always will. That isn't unreasonable.

Remember we should all take some lessons from the past did brand loyalties save sega dreamcast no being loyal to the end you might just go down with the ship that your in. Sony is in a bad postion and if mgs 4 and uncharted dont move systems they are in trouble.

I write this topic and I cue the hordes of people going online desperately attempting to justify to themselves something that was clearly a huge waste of money that is causing them to miss out on the fun they would be having if not for their sappy nostalgia and stubborn pride. Just save yourselves trouble and trade that 20 pound black beast of a space heater in for something that actually has good games and has lots more in store.

Microsoft was new to the game. I mean this was thier first console. Lots of people were skeptical and the Xbox could not get games. Again because they didn't have enough consoles sold.

Readmy blog about simple math. That is what drives this business. It is all about how much money the developer will make vs how much it costs to make the game. What is my return going to be. PS3 not even having 5 million consoles sold.. Wii sports sold more then the PS3 has consoles sold..

Listen I know the cows want to defend sony.. But this is a new game.. Microsoft established themselves last gen with Halo and Halo 2..They eventually started getting games at the end.

And lets face it Xbox live was the best online service period. And still is today.

GTA San Andreas was the ace in the hole for Sony.. Why do you think MS went after Rockstar. Look at the sales of that game and how many consoles it sold.

This is a new gen and MS has the respect of the developers and the gamers this gen. MS is going after 3rd party exclusives that are rocking the Xbox..

Gears of War, Bioshock, Mass Effect.. Those 3 games will all have a AAA rating..3rd party developers

Halo 3, Forza 2.. Big contenders from MS studios!!

Ninja Gaiden 2, GTA4 Exclusive content.. Big adavantage for the Xbox! Lets not forget DMC4 will be on both consoles.

I am sorry but Sony dug themselves a hole by not putting a product on the market that sold exactly at the same price as the 360.. No way in hell I was buying a PS3 for 600 bucks with no games..

The 360 was 200 bucks cheaper.. More games and better online play..

Sorry but Sony has failed this Gen.. They are just dying a slow death.. But MS and Nintendo will win this generation. The writing is all over the wall.

The two reasons Sony isn't crushing the competition are their auto support for blu ray when it's still slightly too expensive, and the lack of killer exclusives. I don't have one game I can say "I would BUY the ps3 for this game"

But then again, I wouldn't buy a xbox 360 for any of my games.. not even my halo 3. Enjoyable, but old. Same as the other games, with a few small modifications. If I had more time on my hands, I'd refute most of what you said... I've lived in the "next gen" console war WAY too long(Not too much on gamespot forums, but all over the place... for nearly 2 years now), and it usually comes down to 360 vs ps3, because the wii is for casual gamers...

Take a look at this graph. Notice that the console sold pretty much equally at first, then the PS2 took off. Do you know what happened at that first great jump, that separated it from the pack? MGS2 was released. The dominance continued when FF, and GT were released, putting the PS2 into a league of it's own.

People like me, who don't own a PS3 yet will be tempted to buy one when these mega-exclusives launch for the PS3. I for one will be picking up a PS3 so that I can play MGS4, along with millions like me.

Well put, but I still believe that Sony holds a few cards that will turn the tables this gen. Halo is huge right? Well GT is bigger, and so is FF. The effect of these exclusives is quite obvious, just look at the latest Japanese sales. The PSP has dominated for the last three weeks. Why? A FF spinoff. Now imagine what a full-fledged FF will do for the PS3. Look back at the PS2, and see how many millions of consoles MGS2 sold. Look at how many millions GT3 sold, and now think, do you expect the PS3 to sell as poorly as it has been doing, even after all of these have been released? The price? A 400 dollar SKU would deal with that problem. I believe that these three games were fundamental to the PS2s success and they are all releasing, exclusively for the PS3, next year. Only once these three have come and gone with little success will I admit that the PS3 has failed, but for now, we just haven't seen enough of the console generation to declare a victor.

Was their a rational for buying the PS2 before MGS2 released? Not really. Did that stop it from winning the console wars? Nope.

Agreeable.

Think about it. Microsoft's hit the market hard this fall/winter, but what plans did you hear about from them during 2008? Only a few. Same with Nintendo. After this winter, the number of good games coming out for both of them drops SEVERELY, and the number of PS3 hits coming out rises significantly.

I think we can all agree Nintendo's base right now is what they wanted it to be, Causal gamers. The wii puts no challenge in my hands, it's too easy to pick up and play... only slightly enjoyable.

Dude the chart proves MY POINT not yours.. Hell the PS2 had almost a 2 year head start before the first xbox and gamecube came out.. The sales on those charts you need to move the lines to the end cylcle. PS2 had almost 30,000,000 consoles sold before the xbox even came into the picture..

MGS4 and GT5 will sell consoles.. But if you think they will sell enough to overtake or even come close to the Wii and 360 which continue to outsell the PS3 2:1 and it is damn there 3:1 and lets not forget.. Xmas is almost here and MS has the strongest line up on any console. There are many people that will look at the consoles for Xmas gifts and right now the 360 library combined with it's cost and it's online service will outsell PS3 easily.. LOL it wont't even be close this Xmas in total sales.. You can take that to the bank or we can take it to SW bets if you want?

Of course the 360 will outsell the PS3 this Christmas. I'm concerned about what happens after that. As in, the next 5 years. I'm sure we can agree that exclusive games sell consoles. The 360 will sell well because of Halo, there is no doubt. In the same manner that Halo will sell consoles, so will the PS3's mega exclusives. The three releasing next year are all of equal, or greater size than Halo. Their were about 175 million consoles sold last gen, but only about 25 this gen. Where are the other 150 million sales? On the fence. What will push them over the fence? Exclusives. Luckily, the PS3 will have plenty of them, and huge ones at that. The PS3 isn't on the verge of "failure" as many on system wars like to believe, it's on the verge of its second wind (or first wind really).
