SMG wins.
I still love SM64 so much, but in terms of overall polish and perfection, SMG took the greatness of SM64 and polished it up perfectly.
The only things SM64 have over galaxy are slightly more open levels, slightly harder difficulty, and nostalgia.
Other than that SMG is superior in almost every regard.
Definetly SMG. Not only did it feature top tier gameplay, but it was like playing a piece of art. The game was just simply amazing.
SM64, while also one of the best games ever, just didn't seem to feature the same level of "Wow" factor that Galaxy had. I mean, you were in freakin' space.

I started gaming on the Master System. That's a straw man argument.
Super Mario 64 - 94 average

Super Mario Galaxy - 97 average

One is just better, that's all. SMG is the clear victor.

Speaking of straw man arguments... Metacritic? Isn't that the site that says that GTA:IV is the best GTA game, Oblivion is better than Morrowind, etc etc? Reviewing has changed, and hype is a big factor in things. SMG was hyped to be the bestest thing ever, and go figure, a lot of people (reviewers) bought into the hype as well. Same deal as Oblivion, same deal as GTAIV.[QUOTE="BioShockOwnz"][QUOTE="Shafftehr"]Good thread for finding out who's new to gaming :)Shafftehr

I mean, that argument can be viable sometimes, but here, nah, it's a straw man argument at best. And SMG is the bestest 3D platformer ever.
Super Mario 64.I really just didn't like Galaxy very much. The level design was creative, but the game was just way too easy for me to enjoy very well.
Good thread for finding out who's new to gaming :)ShafftehrNo, it's a good thread to see who's blinded by nostalgia. Mario 64 is the weakest of the 3D Mario games and is plagued with many problems of early 3D platformers, such as the terrible camera. Mario 64 is my least favorite of all main console Mario platformers.
Altough SM64 was great, SMG was similar enough that, unlike Super Mario Sunshine, it isn't exactly like comparing "apples to oranges." Super Mario Galaxy blew Super Mario 64 out of the water any way you look at it, based on the musical score, the leve design, the pacing, the story, the graphics, and pure innovation.

More like finding out who bases their choices on nostalgia. I've been gaming for 18+ years and I can say without a doubt that SMG is better. Better levels, mechanics, controls, cammera, graphics, and music = better game. For those saying talking about difficulty, go back and replay the game. The main thing that makes the game harder than SMG is the awkward cammera.

SMG. SM64 is plagued by a lot of issues that are ignored because it was revolutionary. However, bring revolutionary for your time still doesn't make a better game in comparison to now a days and frankly, SM64 doesn't have the core imo to go toe to toe with Galaxy at all. I can see those perefering 64 due to more open world structure but that by no means makes it better, just different. I wish people wouldn't equate open world with better, espcially when most of the best platformers are linear.
OwningSM64, as well as Sunshine and Galaxy I'd have to say Galaxy is the better game. Now upon release, I'd say SM64 had a greater impact and that whole "AHH and OOO" factor definitely can not be matched by today's games. But SM64 has aged and comparing it head on to SMG, it's just not as good. I'm sorry, but nostalgia, outdated controls, outdated graphics, and simple platforming elements (by today's standards) won't be enough to put it ahead.

Or those who have different opinions from others that MIGHT, just MIGHT not be influenced by some sort of evil fanboyish force, but are just based on regular old personal preference...
