Poll Now that it's been almost a year whats your opinion on Sony's E3 2015? (60 votes)

It was bad 52%
It was amazing 48%

Something I've seen tossed around and I actually believe this is a great discussion to have.

Sonys E3 was imo and a lot of others, was heavily dependent on flash vs. substance. What do I mean? FF7R, Shenmue 3, and TLG took an others wise eh conference and made everyone explode. Didn't help things that Square trolled that WoFF intro before the FF7R reveal.

Here lies the issue. These games created excitement, Sony knew it would, but when you sit back and look Sonys conference was pretty bad. Or at least imo, it wasn't really anything special.

FF7R showed nothing. Nothing at all. We got a trailer of some walking cgi. That's it.

Shenmue 3 was later revealed to have nothing to do with sony directly outside pointing to a kickstarter campaign.

TLG was basically a rehash showing.

There were other games of course but the reason sonys E3 got high marks were because these games were announced. I understand excitement but I was amazed by how many people were going off the rails and how long it took for some of them to realize that was all for nothing.

Only FF7R has any real impact anyway, Shenmue is irrelevant, and the team that made the shenmue its cult following likely are not there. The reveal screwed with peoples head thinking it was coming, it was in development, and SOny was backing it, which was intentional, but that was not the case. There was more tot he story.

TLG (also irrelevant) basically showed us nothing new, and I feel like they slapped together some footage in a rush just to have it at the conference. We have gotten zero info since then we have gotten nothing.

FF7R, with possibly Hitman 2016 as a guide (a bad one), will be in episodic format. Because, it seemed obvious to me, they had nothing. So they decided to try and keep the hype train going by releasing the game in pieces to keep your attention but that's likely not going to work, SE's recent game decisions have made zero sense it it has carried over to their subsidiaries, which is not good. We also had to wait too long for actual information.

I mean you see excitement all over but it's really confined to a small group of gamers, who half of which likely won't by these games anyway. So many people were going gaga over Shenmue 3 how many do you think will actually buy it? FF7R may hit some fans, and there may be a bit of frontloading, but thinking that's going to do gangbusters is also nonsense, though at least that would sell. But SE needs to stop trying to "outdo 7" as they say, they need to focus on XV and make it a unique experience that appeals to gamers. Once they actually get that through their head FF will go back selling FF7 and 8 numbers.

So I guess the reveal of Killer Instinct in 2013 Xbox One is the best conference? because a lot of those threads are up across multiple gaming websites. Odd way to determine quality.

Now how about a serious discussion?

TLG: Yay that's still around
Shenmue: Kickstarter into the trash
FF7: Vague, episodic bullshit

It was overhyped. Killer announcements, but none that stuck around.

Yeah, sorry but my brain is wired now "E3" + "bad" = "E3 2013 Xbox One"

I don't remember much detail from last year, only Shenmue 3 and TLG.

Haven't really thought much about it. A lot of the things they announced hasn't even been released yet and some of it hasn't even been talked about since that E3 so as of right now, I'm still waiting to even think of a grade for it.

It was trash, but blind fanboys will say otherwise. At the end of the day they just re-revealed vaporware with a lackluster gameplay trailer (mind you we haven't seen ANY of this game since), an episodic remastering of a game that many of us have already played and wait for it....a kickstarter.

It was bad.

Sony can pretty much talk about the same games this year at E3 that they talk about last year really LOL. Just show off gameplay footage this time with 1 or 2 more new I.P.'s and that's this year's E3 for them.

Looking back, the entire e3 was terrible. Sony, MS and Nintendo. Sony's was the least smelly though.

Sony impressed

  • Until Dawn
  • Tearaway Unfolded
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • Uncharted 4
  • The Last Guardian
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Dreams
  • RIGS Mechanized Combat League

And having great 3rd party industry support made us feel good as well.

The whole thing was a cock tease. Show a little of this announce maybe something of that and no release dates or even year to expect it. But COD maps are coming first, not free just first.

its a lesson in how to handle E3 when you know you have nothing in the pipeline for that year.

E3 is all about building the hype and dropping the bombs...especially the conferences. you want to be grabbing those headlines. a conference that contains FF7, shenmue, uncharted, some new IPs that could be promising and having the first announcement of big 3rd party games (GTA5 update was shown at the PS4 conference first i think) is not going to fail.

it worked. MS made announcements about games that would be released relatively soon. so did nintendo. no one noticed...its frickin shenmue and FF7 backed by uncharted and GTA.

with the NX nintendo should just announce everything coming to the NX over the next 5 years. even if its just a logo and a hint. just f*BEEP* it...zelda, metroid, icarus, fzero, mario kart, final fantasy coming home (and do remind everyone that FF started out on nintendo platforms...get all sentimental about it), project somethingsomething (cancel it later :P), pikmin total war (come on nintendo make that a thing), new exclusive from CDPR (ring em later after E3). the just when it looks like the show is wrapped up: BAM monolithsofts new game (basically a trailer of random scenes, some that wont appear in the end game, and a logo)....to be released...er at some stage.

thats E3...thats what it's all about. the hype and the bombs.

Never thought about it like that.

SONY's domination of gen 8 is still being questioned on how it all started, the roots of the domination if you will.

Sometimes just selling 2:1 over other consoles cant be explained, although there is tangible evidence that MS did it to themselves.

Overall E3 was excellent. Mirror's Edge, Shadow Warrior 2 Gameplay, Doom Reveal, Shenmue 3 Announcement, Fallout 4's First Footage, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Goodness and so on.

It was the only great E3 in recent years. For the last couple of years E3 was pretty bad IMO. If you only talk about Sony conference then it was pretty good too.

From my point of view, it was one of the best E3's conferences ever

It made me went from XB360 to PS4 instead of XBO

And I was really liking the idea of buying XBO

The thing that pisses me off (MS is just as guilty) is when both companies hyped "it should take less time to develop games" when it still takes 2-4 years to make games on said "easier" consoles. Then the whole "we're dedicated to releasing indie games", for a system(s) that have been out for 3 years I can think of maybe a handful of pretty decent-amazing indie games, which ironically most of them are multiplat anyways

Lets go down the list, the ones I can name on the top of my head

  • Rocket League
  • Axiom Verge
  • Soma
  • Hyper Light Drifter
  • The Witness
  • Enter The Dungeon
  • Salt and Sanctuary
  • Helldivers

That's a pretty meh list (not saying those games suck, what I'm getting at is the lack of indies), between the X1 and PS4 the lack of indie games is starting to piss me off.

It was an overall great E3 last year, I enjoyed pretty much every show. Though I thought Sony's was rather forgettable, I'd rather be hyped about games coming soon than those with no time frame (even a rough one) and show no footage outside CG cutscenes. For myself it was Mirrors Edge 2, Dishonored 2, Dark Souls 3, Deus Ex:MD, Doom, Fallout 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn. Even then I take them all with a grain of salt, I really enjoy E3 no mater what though, it's a great time to be a gamer, very exciting.

Sony's E3 was no different than most E3's of years past. They hype a dozen or so games and maybe 2-3 will release within a 12 month period.

It obviously became an event etched in gaming history or else people wouldn't have such strong salty opinions about it. Granted in this thread most of them are lems trying to make themselves feel better about owning the 'bone, but as of now they'll take any opportunity to be petty and jaded. Definitely separates the true gamers from the MS corporate fanchilds anyway.

I guess 'boners don't have any mythical long term unique franchises to dig up and finally develop for those hardcore gaming fans that have been hankering on about wanting them made for a while or a better part of a decade. I mean with all the turmoil going down with MS's first party it's not surprising they no longer have any hope.

The same as every E3 pretty much ever from every company. Smoke and mirrors and repeating games from previous years and they'll be showing them again this year. I enjoy E3 but I really don't understand the people who buy into the hype year after year.

I was unimpressed with their conference immediately after it was over last year and my opinion of it has not changed.

I could not understand why Sony received so much praise over a remastered game announcement that showed nothing, a kickstarter campaign announcement for an idea that won't actually be a game for a very long time, and a boring gameplay demo of a boy just calling his dog for 5 minutes that looked like a PS3 game at best (and that's being generous). The only thing that I got hyped about from their conference last year was the Uncharted 4 demo.

It was Okay and all though I can't say I was AS amazed as others were

The Last Gaurdian showing I thought was actually pretty weak. Especially considering how long that game has been in development. Was expecting to see alot more from that game's trailer since it's been a decade...

The Shenmue stuff is kind of funny in retrospect with how Sony basically was like "Oh hey gamers get hyped! Because we can't be bothered to this this game ourselves we're going to put it ON YOU! ISN'T THAT COOL!" I mean, I can't say I'm that perturbed at the fact that a company as large as Sony pulled showing a kickstarter during their presentation. It was a way to help the kickstarter get some attention I suppose. Regardless of how questionable it was for Sony to do that, I never played a Shenmue game, so the third game's reveal didn't really do anything for me.

Now the FFVII Remake was something that excited me. Yeah, there has been some concerning news on the game since then ( and TBH as excited as I was at the idea of a FFVII remake, I always still had some skepticism considering SE's track record/reputation), but that doesn't change the fact that, at the time, the reveal was pretty damn nice.

I'm pretty sure last E3 was when they announced that game that blends prehistoric times with machines or whatever. That game looked like it might be rad.

I can't really remember much else about Sony's 2015 E3 at the moment. Overall not bad but eh, I've definitely been more hyped by other E3 prsentations.

It was good for Sony, as it got a lot of people talking about the console. But of course it was overhyped.
