Poll Now that it's been almost a year whats your opinion on Sony's E3 2015? (60 votes)
Something I've seen tossed around and I actually believe this is a great discussion to have.
Sonys E3 was imo and a lot of others, was heavily dependent on flash vs. substance. What do I mean? FF7R, Shenmue 3, and TLG took an others wise eh conference and made everyone explode. Didn't help things that Square trolled that WoFF intro before the FF7R reveal.
Here lies the issue. These games created excitement, Sony knew it would, but when you sit back and look Sonys conference was pretty bad. Or at least imo, it wasn't really anything special.
FF7R showed nothing. Nothing at all. We got a trailer of some walking cgi. That's it.
Shenmue 3 was later revealed to have nothing to do with sony directly outside pointing to a kickstarter campaign.
TLG was basically a rehash showing.
There were other games of course but the reason sonys E3 got high marks were because these games were announced. I understand excitement but I was amazed by how many people were going off the rails and how long it took for some of them to realize that was all for nothing.
Only FF7R has any real impact anyway, Shenmue is irrelevant, and the team that made the shenmue its cult following likely are not there. The reveal screwed with peoples head thinking it was coming, it was in development, and SOny was backing it, which was intentional, but that was not the case. There was more tot he story.
TLG (also irrelevant) basically showed us nothing new, and I feel like they slapped together some footage in a rush just to have it at the conference. We have gotten zero info since then we have gotten nothing.
FF7R, with possibly Hitman 2016 as a guide (a bad one), will be in episodic format. Because, it seemed obvious to me, they had nothing. So they decided to try and keep the hype train going by releasing the game in pieces to keep your attention but that's likely not going to work, SE's recent game decisions have made zero sense it it has carried over to their subsidiaries, which is not good. We also had to wait too long for actual information.
I mean you see excitement all over but it's really confined to a small group of gamers, who half of which likely won't by these games anyway. So many people were going gaga over Shenmue 3 how many do you think will actually buy it? FF7R may hit some fans, and there may be a bit of frontloading, but thinking that's going to do gangbusters is also nonsense, though at least that would sell. But SE needs to stop trying to "outdo 7" as they say, they need to focus on XV and make it a unique experience that appeals to gamers. Once they actually get that through their head FF will go back selling FF7 and 8 numbers.
