Too true. After the Marvel MMO that nobody cared about was cancelled, he gave a big BS story about it being his most anticipated 360 game.

Nearly every moment of Mass Effect is visually spectacular. Beyond being technically impressive, the effort and creativity put into shaping an entire futuristic galaxy is evident everywhere you look and there is a lot to see. Your path through the game's main storyline introduces you to a series of impressive locations, beautifully produced cutscenes, and interesting characters that feel real--even if they do happen to be aliens.

Nearly everything you'll see in the game looks absolutely amazing thanks to an inspired and creative art design and some serious technical muscle, but it will sometimes strain under the pressure.

There has been a downgrade and I for one am a bit dissapointed.

Like you could see in the 2006 demo they promissed several game-play elements that are not longer incorporated in the final game.

1/ The interruption system in the dialogs have been scrapped. I thought this was one of the coolest features in the early demo's. It would have made the sequences a lot less static, in the final version however the game plays exactly like kotor in these sequences. Next-gen... right.

2/ As you could see in the 2006 demo the galaxy map scaled seamlessly from galaxy view to planet view. The interface was really colorfull and looked very star trek like. In the retail version however there are more loadtimes during map travel than you can shake a stick at. The interface itself looks bland an uninteresting.

3/ The freedom promissed in teh early pressreleases is also non-existant in the retail version. The planets on which you can actually land aren't as numerous as promised and the locations where you can land are often bland and much too restricted (yeah I'll land on an uncharted planet, but I have only acces to about a square mile of terrain...).

4/ The graphics have seriously been downgraded. Where it used to look immensly shiney, the armors now don't reflect like they did in the early demo. Also there's massive texture pop in, sometimes even after several seconds of dialog.

The game is still amazing, but it's not the game they promised it would be. It's also clear the early demo has to have been pre-rendered. I find it very disturbing that a game like Killzone 2 (which I'll never play by the way, I'm not a killzone fan) has been serioulsy attacked for showing pre-rendered content in the past, but ME magically gets away with it.

You guys can defend it all you want, I like it a lot, think it's one of the best games on the 360 of all time, but trying to negate the downgrade is just foolish. There's even a lot of holes in the scenario where game content has been cut. It's clear this game has been rushed towards the end so they wouldn't have to spend a lot of time still providing work for MS after they were incorporated by EA.

The only downgrade is in PS3 fanboy mind and hopes that Mass Effect would fail

I most certain think it looks downgraded... I'm still wondering what happend with the shadowing during the conversations. Its horrible, but not as horrible as the Gears of War cutscenes on the 360.

This is one of those games that looks ugly upclose and better at a distance.

And a game like GT5 is a game that looks better up close.

Well, hadn't Bioware actually confirmed that they choose to have visibly loading textures instead of lowering their quality.
Both sounds pretty dumb, really. They should have simply released it on PC. God knows why they're doing it.

After reading animation_imp's post, I cannot help but feel that this game is KOTOR all over again. Bioware doesn't know how to make games anymore. Period. And yes, I understand that your underdeveloped Xbox minds cannot comprehend that KOTOR is actually a messy turd, mostly because it's pretty much the only RPG you know. I don't blame you. I blame Bioware for constantly degrading quality.....sigh....looks like we'll never see a game like Baldur's Gate 2 at this rate.....

Please don't try to compare things to a 7 year old game, it just doesn't contribute anything to the debate.

And Bioware has also made this and Jade Empire since Kotor, so what are you trying to say? This game is broken you clame, an so was Kotor you clame AND ALL GAMES IN BETWEEN HAVE ALSO. So there is one game in between.... pretty underwhelming.

And by the way Kotor was a great rpg. They made it alot easier playing an evil character, compared to BG. If you tried to take evil choises in BG you couldn't shack the feeling that you were destroying alot of the questing for yourself, because they almost immediatly turned into a fight.

that's not true. i played that level yesterday. and i would have loved to place individual squad members in different positions.

Looks good, but could have looked much better in many places. Many textures are not that high res.

It says alot about a game when it manages to provide a compelling gameplay experience that transcends any of the technical problems it has.

Downgrade or not, it's still an excellent game.

In my book, still one of my top 5 of the year.
