No, Although it probably has the best Character models, and certainly the best cutscenes, the enviroments in some levels are a little lacking.
Doesnt detract from the game though, for the most part it looks amazing, its a stellar game.
the overall picture is good but the textures suck big time...

Yep, the graphic designers for MGS4 know how to make crap textures look good. I feel like very little of the game is really high rez, when I play it. Do I care? Not at all. I think technically GEOW 2 or KZ2 will be more of a feat. Some parts of MGS4 really wow me though like the chase scenes.

Exactly. The char. models are without a doubt some the best if not the best on consoles but the environment on the other hand is pretty average.(poor texture useage).

dude...get to act 3. 'nuff said.
The graphics are great and the textures are subtle and highly detailed. Although some are low rez, over all the game looks phenomenal. The textures aren't like in the darkness where the normal mapping is well over done, and everything has a wet glossy effect. That would simply take away from the realism, but everything in this game is sharp and well done. The over-all package has the best graphics out.
Does anyone know if the cutscenes are CGI or in-engine, maybe thats why it filled up a blu-ray diskcrispytheone88
They are in-engine it seems, because many of them convert directly into gameplay. There are a number of big reasons it filled up the Blu-ray disc. One of them is uncompressed audio which I have deemed useless. I have optical 5.1 Dolby setup and the sound is great for a game, but no better than one with compressed audio. It was a big waste of space. Also, we don't know if Kojima used data padding or not. Data padding is when the developer duplicates data on the blu-ray to counteract the PS3s slow disc read rate.

I'm midway through act 5. The scene with the suicide gekkos = crap textures. Not a big deal, it's not like you have time to notice.
:| I just finished ACt 4................................................... :( spoilers. Anyhow this game has incredible polish, the textures are mismatch in my opinion. From far away they look phenomenal, and then when you very closely its as good as before. But in Act 3 it really changed my opinion of the game, just because the devs aren't trying to make the normal mapping pop out, and they chose not too add that whole "next-gen bloom" thing in Act 2. The over-all package looks amazing, and in any game you can nitpick at the smaller things.

Thanks for an honest reply, you can usually tell, although Blue Dragon was all CGI cut scenes, and I kept asking myself why, there really wasn't much diffrence between the cartoony grphics, and the CGi cartoon graphics
you would probably notice much more of a diffrence on MGS4

lol I don't think people will put 2 and 2 together with the suicide gekkos. I've tried really hard to not say any specific names for what happens in the later acts. I'm just happy that the final act didn't get spoiled for me yet or by a review or by Kojima with his trailers.
I agree MGS4 really is a game you have to nitpick to point out it's short comings. The only thing I find myself rolling my eyes at is the games sometimes laborious cutscenes. I mean, there have been times when I'm just thinking, reall, how the hell? They just get really over the top. Overall, it's amazing, but geez. Maybe I need to free my mind and go to fantasyland for some of this stuff.
No, it share faults with many other Japanese developed titles this gen, one of those is the lack of bump mapped textures and the lighting can be pretty flat in some spots, and also there are some jaggied low-res shadows here and there. However the character models looks absolutely amazing and I love the visual design and I cannot think of another released Japanese title so far this gen that looks better than this.
This game is king when it comes to one thing though, and that is sound. The sound mixing is pretty much flawless and the music is incredibly good aswell. There is no other game out that sounds this good with my 5.1 speaker system as this game does, period.ZimpanX
Yeah, I kinda got the feeling here and there that we were still back on the PS2 with this game. Not because it looks bad, it just doesn't look really advanced. It seems like Japanese developers don't like to take advantage of the new age graphical prowess. Konami did a great job with MGS4, but I totally see what you mean.

MGS4 is definitely the best-looking game on consoles.
I only have two words to say: motorcycle chase. My jaw was hanging on the floor throughout.
Zeliard9
i want that motorcycle BTW
I dont know i still find Uncharted pretty damn impressivekratos-7
yeah, same here. MGSIV is pretty good. but Uncharted still beats it.

I have yet to get to that part.

Here's what makes that part so graphically awesome. Some might consider it a spoiler:
Basically the entire chase is an interactive cinematic in the truest sense, and you gain full control of Snake who's on the back of a motorcycle whenever you press R1 to aim, where it then switches into the usual 3rd-person view. Whenever you let go of R1, it goes back into the cinematic where it actively shows the chase in various cool camera angles. It's completely seamless and practically resembles CGI the whole way through. Never seen or experienced anything like it in a game.
Perhaps, i think was more of a sequence driven game instead of plot sequence. Its identity relied to much on the other games, and i would have really liked it to be more of what kojima promised before. Some of the concepts are crazy enough, especially liquids arm thing. 6 years older and a lot more wiser, it really doesn't stand any more.

Yah, the break in between gameplay and cinematics = FLAWLESS VICTORY.
ACT 5 my jaw dropped to how good it looked.
I know the textures are not up to Gears, but the Character models are bar-none, well maybe Uncharted.
It also has a lot of detail, the most I've ever seen in a game.
Plus the game is very long.
The characters are absolutely fantastic. A cutscene during a certain fight almost looked like it was CGI quality to me. Overrall though I'd say no it isn't the best looking game out there, but it does look good.-Xeno-
Seriously I thought the game was just gorgeous, there are just some parts of the game (especially after you start act 3) where the game looks amazing.
