Ouch indeed. Could have something to do with the recession. I mean the PS3 is rather pricey..

Ouch indeed. Could have something to do with the recession. I mean the PS3 is rather pricey..

Sony's was definitely cought off-guard by it. I wonder how will they react. A price cut may seem the only possible solution. I mean, we've seen an increment of every console sales but none of Sony's.

The Ps2 is understandable I guess. I think pretty much everyone has a PS2 by now.:P Still, 59% is alot :? The PSP...A big  PS3 is due to the price I think. A pricedrop would definitely help but I don't know how much they can afford to risk that.

The PSP's 2007 lineup was considerable better than its 2008 one. I guess that affected its first quarter sales. Nonetheless, I expect an increase after some of its big titles are released. Yeah, Sony's reaction capability may be limited by the fact the PS3 is being sold at a loss. I have no idea what can be done about that :?

I see, I don't know anything about the PSP tbh. Could the many new versions of the PSP have something to do with it as well? That people are simply holding on to their money because they think there will be a newer version down the road anyway? :P lol idk..just guessing really.

I don't think the lineup has lots to do with it to be honest. People could go back to the cheaper last year line-up as well.

I can't find another reason. It's an awesome piece of hardware, and as a multimedia device is almost unmatched. I suppose the rise of the iPhone could have completely outshined it in that regard. And the DS has overshadowed its gaming aspect. So I suppose that the competiton was just too strong.

Matt Matthews has an analyst on March's NPD numbers at Gamasutra.

The 1Q console and handheld sales are interesting:

"The Wii was up 42% from the first quarter of 2008, while the Nintendo DS (including the 58,000 Nintendo DSi sales) was up a more modest 8%.

After a nearly flat performance from 1Q 2007 to 1Q 2008, the Xbox 360 gained almost 38% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2009.

In fact, 1Q 2009 was the first non-holiday quarter during which the Xbox 360 broke the million system barrier. (It had previously come within 25,000 systems during 3Q 2007, during the launch of Halo 3.)

Sony's systems have started 2009 with far lower sales than it saw in 2008. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) saw a decline of 30% from its sales in 1Q 2008 while the PlayStation 3 dropped almost 14%. The ailing PlayStation 2 dropped a staggering 59% in 1Q 2009, year-on-year."

ezikiell

OUCH and that is why it blows my mind when the Sony defenders say the playstation sales are fine. All 3 Sony products are going backwards in sales. It has got to be more then just price if it is all three products and have some to do with the Playstation name has lost some appeal.

200$ price tag with 90% of PS3's library

But thats always been the case, i mean the whole price thing, and lets not forget its the Premium that does most of the selling.

Halo Wars + RE5 would be my guess.

The 360 has had plenty of games throughout its lifetime, and yet two months in a row it sales at a really high rate out of nowhere. I mean heck, more than 400k last week, may i remind everyone thats what the Wii and PS2 used to sell!

Yeah, maybe...if KZ2 doesn't hit that 500,000 sales mark in Europe, then KZ2 is clearly is behind the norm, for sure. It has all year to sell, I hope Sony's efforts weren't in vain...It's a good game. So far it's a little over a month old and it's sold 1 million copies to date, despite the worlds econsomic crisis. So, we will see.

SolidTy

it has not sold a million to date. it was bundled heavily in europe and pver there they count bundled sales. it is close to 900,000 worldwide sold to customers

Okay, that's fine...not like I care, I'm just trying to be accurate. Technically, the numbers a million, but even if we play your game, KZ2 sold 900,000 in a little over a month.

Sounds pretty good to me, KZ2 has all year to keep on keepin' on. Obviously a Holiday release would have been better, but Sony knows something we don't I guess.

Just to point out, Sony almost ALWAYS uses shipped to retailers as "sold".
