NPD preview; Mario Kart outsold a version of GTA IV?

Nintendo's Wii Sits Atop April U.S. Sales

WiiTM emerged as the top-selling console in April, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks U.S. video game sales. Wii sold more than 714,000 units in April alone, bringing its lifetime sales in the United States to more than 9.5 million.

"Wii sales were buoyed in part by the strong launch of Mario Kart Wii, which sold more than 1.1 million units," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Our belief in appealing to a broad, diverse audience of players continues to resonate with consumers, and we look forward to continuing our outreach to an expanded audience with the launch of Wii Fit next week."

Other Nintendo highlights from April's NPD report include:

* Mario Kart® Wii finished as the No. 2 game of the month.
* Six of the top 10 games of the month are for Nintendo systems: Mario Kart Wii (No. 2), Wii PlayTM (No. 4), Super Smash Bros.® Brawl (No. 5), Pokémon® Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness (No. 7), Pokémon® Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time (No. 8) and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (No. 9).
* Super Smash Bros. Brawl crossed the 3 million sales mark in the United States.
* Wii and Nintendo DSTM again finished as the two top-selling hardware systems.

Anyone know if this is reliable?

Tonight's NPD will be perfect for Wii Bingo.

Further proof PS3 is just used as a blu-ray player. GTA4 is to huge a title for it to come in less then 1st or 2nd.

Supposedly in about 40 minutes, but GAF seems to have assploded from the traffic, so they might already be up.

When is the cut off for the NPDs btw? April 30th?

GTA IV will only have been out for two days. As big a launch as it was, dont expect mind blowing figures.

I doubt SOny will spin this they're not Microsoft. I doubt Sony is going to say "Uh... we had shipping shortages of GTA4 so thats why Mario Kart beat is in the U.S. but next month we'll be back on track and above Mario Kart."

Anyways I didn't think GTA4 on any system would get outsold by MK Wii but it makes sense that the PS3 version did considering the casual appeal plus install base.

360 GTA is #1, we all know that. Sure Wii hardware outsold 360, but what else is new? Lemmings have gotten used to Wii selling like crazy. We only concern ourselves with beating out Sony now.

In Europe the Playstation 3 version is doing fine.

As a European, I couldn't care less for your filthy NPD numbers.

Why are people going crazy over this ? The Wii has twice the installbase in NA , if Mario Kart didn't outsell the ps3 version then something would be very very wrong.

Because common sense tells us that out of all the consoles no game will have 100% attach rate but can still do pretty good with the install base. If the Wii was down to the PS3 install base I wonder how much it would have sold.

Thats cause the PS2 launched 6 months earlier in Nippon. VG doesn't include the American numbers at the start of the line.

All you do with your life on the bords is bash sony. There are more wii owners then PS3 owners thats a fact. Anything with mario in it sells like hotcakes. Heck even the most recent mario party which was crap sold great.
