I remember when Oblivion released, and a lot of people loved it. There seemed to be a large majority of hermits who hated it though. Then, I remember reading threads that blamed lemmings for Bethesda "dumbing down" everything to appeal to console owners. There was never any evidence that Bethesda "dumbed down" stuff to appeal to the console owners, but that is what was speculated by hermits. So, Bethesda supposedly concentrated on the 360 version of the game 1st and foremost, then "copied" that version over to the PC. Why don't hermits blame Bethesda if you don't like the leveling system in Oblivion? Also, why do console owners get blamed for a game getting "dumbed down" when something is multiplat on PC and 360? It is as if hermits think that if Bethesda made Oblivion ONLY FOR PC, that it would have turned out vastly different, superior, and been much more hardcore...

I didn't really have a problem with the difficulty, nor do I blame console for any of it's shortcomings. I just found Oblivion to be a mediocre game.

But I think the greatest example would be to play the Pc version with the best mods that did things like increase the graphical detail and remove the annoying level scaling from dungeons. The modded Pc version of oblivion is alot closer to what Pc gamers were expecting.

I loved Oblivion.

Personally, I could not care less what others think about the game.

Oblivion wasn't that bad game. It's great. It's even superb with all the available mods and stuff. But it misses that "something" Morrowind had.

If they had made it with the PC audience in mind.. yes. You see alot of depth and challenge are taken away from games when they make thier transition from PC to console. Not that it occurs all the time, but mostly with classics.

I loved Oblivion and think it did some things better than Morrowind. But a problem that I had with Oblivion is it seems to take away some of the interconneted quests, Like doing quests for one faction or guild doesn't affect the others,
such as the quest for the Thieves Guild where you have to steal from the Archmage of the mage's Guild, I was the Archmage and seems really pointless stealing my staff and placeing a letter, then breaking into another mage's guild members house to return my staff.
EDIT: also the leveling system seems wacky, mainly having bandits get all this leet loot while the town guards still have their old armor, and weak weapons compared to the bandits.

Yeah, they really didn't think that one out. It kind of took the replayability out of the game considering you could do every quest in the game with 1 character, good or evil.

The difficulty or whatever does nothing to indicate whether or not Bethesda used the consoles as the lead platform. The UI and graphics, however, left no doubt. The stock menu screens take zero advantage of M/KB or the PC's higher resolutions, and lots of under-the-hood ini file changes were things that were originally geared towards a console's lower memory amount. But I'm betting more console owners bought the game anyway, so you guys earned it. XD

I don't care about the dumbed down difficulty. I cared about the dumbed down depth of the game. I could drown in Morrowind, while in Oblivion the deepest it went is up to the ankles. So much stuff was taken out that it made the game terrible.

The game switched to being console-centric and got dumbed down. Now.. it might have been pure coincidence, dumbing down might have been completely unrelated to decision of focusing on consoles. But considering this in the last 8-9 years every single PC-centric IP that switched to being console-centric got dumbed down., to varying degrees, but still every single one I think the "it's pure coincidence" excuse is getting a little thin

The game was undeniably tailored for console users, and in turn dumbed down for PC users. Don't get me wrong, Oblivion is a great game, but compared to Daggerfall, or even Morrowind, you'll see how much they removed (or pointlessly added) to cater for their new audience. But to be fair, most of the features people hate about Oblivion were suggested in the Bethsoft Forums. Luckily the suggestions for TESV seem to be moving toward a Daggerfall style, so I'm very happy about that. It's also worth noting that Bethesda staff are appearing in the TES General Discussion more frequently now, so I'm assuming their gathering ideas for TESV.

Difficulty? You guys do know that there was a little bar that you could use to turn up the difficulty level, right?

The difficulty has nothing to do with Oblivions console-centric-ness.

I never really thought of Oblivion having a difficulty. Some missions are easy and difficult depending on what level your character is, what the mission is, what weapon you are using, or what kind of character you are being. Oblivion is awesome.

I think jeffwulf was talking about the depth of the game itself, not the water level. In Morrowind there was mystery, tons of lore, politics, religions, prejudice, detailed conversations etc. In Oblivion all of this was toned down in some way or taken out.

I don't think a PC-only release would really have changed much considering how much was fundamentally wrong with the game. My hermit friend constantly disagrees, but, well, he's a hermit.

Once I get my new PC, I see the different and let you know, as I unfortunately bought it twice, once on PC and then later on 360.

The game was dumbed down.

ITs NOT an RPG, its an action fantasy game.

Its because bethseda wanted to appeal to a wide audience who were 'in to' action games and didnt care for role playing depth.

Thus those who expecting a great role playing game were shafted.

The game was indeed dumbed as others have pointed - a great series turned into just mindless hack and slash most of the time.

I think more than the console the blame should be on the devs who think console gamers don't like deep games

Yes, it turns up the damage you receive... The combat is crap anyways.

Oblivion had more than 100 side quests...

Retrieve "enter item name" situated in "enter cave name" Or "enter place name"

now..time that by 100 times

lets not forget the holding quest arrow. Bethesda did say that when they developed Oblivion, Xbox 360 was the primary and ported to the pc.

Bioshock seem simplied as well compared to system shock but it had something that Oblivion didnt, Good story, voice dialogue, character and atmosphere and probably more RPG elements :P

Oh man, Dark Messiah is more RPG than BioShock.

At least it has an INVENTORY!

Other than that, they're quite the same... The plasmids are exactly like DM's spells! Oh and combat in BioShock is crap, while DM has the most awesome melee combat in any game.

Oblivion would have been so much better with a combat like in Dark Messiah! At least it wouldn't have been dull...

I'm glad your into RPG's, but the TES series is meant to be complex and deep, not simple. Having less 'hardcore' gameplay isn't a good thing. CRPG's need more skills, weapons, challenges, lore, choices and immersiveness amongth other things. When they start to cut down on those fundamental aspects then the RPG will be cut down into nothing more than an action advanture game, exactly what happened to Oblivion. I'm sure every TES fan out there is praying Bethesda will make TESV complex and immerse.

For real, even if Oblivion was dumbed down for console gamers it doesn't matter as the story line was pretty damn boring, plus those Oblivion gates became a chore after a while. Morrowind GOTY edition wipes the floor with it.

The funny thing is that they failed miserably in more ways than one with this. They've alienated the carry over customers from Daggerfall and Morrowind with all the gutting of content. Also, a lot of their potential new customers still see Oblivion as a slow paced, boring RPG. They've landed right in the unpleasant middleground.

...It is as if hermits think that if Bethesda made Oblivion ONLY FOR PC, that it would have turned out vastly different, superior, and been much more hardcore...

AvIdGaMeR444

I don't know as I would go so far as to say it would be vastly different in all area. We'd likely have seen a more robust options menu for the graphics, so that it could be made to look its best without having to go into the configuration files to change options that wouldn't be available for the console crowd. The inventory system in the game would likely be vastly different, made for a control system with more than four or five buttons. Its not hard to imagine that had Bethesda focused the game on the PC, we would likely have never had to wait for mods to come out in order to get rid of the atrocious levelling system of the mobs within the game.

In the end, it would perhaps have not been vastly different, but indeed, superior, and indeed, more hardcore.

I think it feels deep and immersive to you because your relatively new to RPG's. In actuality, Oblivon is toned down, simple and despised in the CRPG community. I suggest you play Daggerfall, Fallout, Lands of Lore, Ultima Underworld, Arcanum, Baulders Gate 2 and Ultima 7, since those games trump Oblivion in every category except graphics.

Doesn't really matter. PC has mods to fix these things.
i am a gamer since the atari2600 and before oblivion i was not interested in any rpg but oblivion change everything for me and now im looking forward to play rpg like fable2 and i also like rpg like mass effect but i must admit i will never play a blue dragon or final fantasy so bethesda do the right thing with a little less hardcore gameplay i become a elder scrool fan and i will certainly buy the next one :)KrazyKenKutarag

I'm not sure why Bethesda toned down Oblivion so much, possibly to appeal to an audience with a shorter attention span, but the fact is that they did, and many fans are pissed by it. Believe me, I'm not in a 'little group', even in the Bethesda forums people criticize Oblivion. Many casual RPG players don't know about Daggerfall, Fallout or Ultima, but those games have shaped what RPG's are and still remain some of the best in the CRPG genre.

It wasn't dumbed down. Bethesda just made a stupid design choice. I'm tired of PC gamers blaming everything on the consoles. Hey, I play PC games, too, but I spend less time actually *****ing about what **** consoles have done to PC games and instead, you know, play games.

We'd love to play the games, if they weren't horribly disfigured from the process of joint development. Like it or not, games are being "dumbed down" in order to appeal to the wider audience. This is an obvious trend that has been happening LONG before Oblivion was ever made. Games that are jointly developed for PCs and Consoles that were originally PC exclusives tend to become casualized and lose the depth that made the games so great on the PC in the first place. After having bought Rainbow Six Vegas 2 I couldn't believe how action oriented the series has become when I compare it to Raven Shield.
