A few days ago I was bashing Oblivion because I played it on the PC a few years back when it came out and didn't really think it was all that great but... since that time I've gotten into Roleplaying and I just picked up a copy of Oblivion game of the year edition for the PS3 and omg this game is awesome

I wholeheartedly disagree; it is one of the most broken role-playing games I have ever played.

Many great RPGs, such as The Witcher, were rough around the edges but veritable jewels at the center.  Oblivion, however, is rather smooth around the edges, but it is, at its core, a bad RPG.

Oblivion (like any bethesda game) is way better on PC than consoles solely because of the massive modding community and try picking up morrowind and/or fallout 3

Morrowind was released in 2002 and is a PC/XBOX game. Pretty much any PC can run it, so get it for PC(plus, there is also a massive mod community for Morrowind) and Morrowind GOTY is relatively cheap (check a bargain-bin)

Fallout 3 is on PS3/360/PC and make sure you play it as well

Oblivion was awesome...until I started to stop really caring about what was going on. You don't connect with the characters, or you're own for that matter. Therefore the game has little emotional impact and feels more like a second job than something fun to play.

I couldn't disagree more. Oblivion was and still is one of the best RPG's out there. I've lost countless hours to it. and I haven't even finished the main quest with the oblivion gates I've just spent tens of hours exploring, doing side quests and levelling. It's one of the best games of this generation for me. Even Fallout 3 can't compare with it's swanky graphics because it's not in a classic fantasy setting, which to me is what an RPG is all about.

It's a boring pseudo-RPG with plastic people living in a copy paste world. Fallout 3 is a lot better even tho it could be blamed from some of the same crimes. Still, unlike Oblivion it at least has a good leveling system, greatly improved dialogue, choices with consequences and rewards for exploring and leveling up.

I actually thought Oblivion was a fun game, although the more you played the less fun it became, but it was an AWFUL RPG. Thank god Beth are back to form with Fallout 3. (I was uber hyped for OBlivion and not at all for Fallout, funny how that works out)

Agreed, its appeal wore off fast. I can see how people can enjoy, it was just way too shallow and lacked any personality or unique traits - for my liking.

It bored me to absolute tears. The main plot was weak, the combat was clunky as hell, I didn't feel the need to explore because every single farking ruin and cave was exactly like the last one, there was that God-forsaken NPC leveling system which negated the need for me to get better armor and equipment, and then there were was the fact the entire VA cast consisted of about five people.

Yeah, but the game won't acknowledge the fact that you are a raging deviant barbarian, because it simply does not support actual role-playing. Any role-playing is purely up to the imagination of the player...and that's one of the many reasons why Oblivion is a terrible RPG.

The game itself isn't too bad, I guess, but that's about all I can say about it. The only amusement I got out of it was purely unintentional (for example, laughing at the awful AI/physics/dialogue/etc.).

go to www.tesnexus.com and browse for some awesome mods. The modding community is why OB and MW are so popular.

Also, fallout 3 modding has begun, go to www.fallout3nexus.com

The character roleplaying was about as shallow as it could get, but Oblivion was a pretty sweet action RPG. They made up for it a lot in Shivering Isles, but it was still pretty shallow.

I think Bethesda dumbed it down too much, but I have higher hopes for the next Elder Scrolls; because it seems like they learned a lot making Fallout 3 trying to get the best of both worlds.

True true, aside from the horrid main quest - it would be nicer if it was more open ended, and the effects on your actions made more of an impact on the enviroment around you, and characters. Otherwise it was a substantial improvement from Oblivion... which is REALLY saying somthing.
