Guess who I get to call tomorrow! And this happened about 30 seconds after applying the latest system update. Gee thanks MS. No Halo3 Beta for me! I get to just stare at my copy of Crackdown while I wait for MS to bill me for fixing my box.
SUPER!

sucks for you. it wouldnt suprise me if the failure rate for 360s was actually closer to 100% then 3-5% they claim.InfamousC
True. All the posts on here made me think my system was going to brick soon. It started acting odd while playing Oblivion awhile back and I had a hunch it would go soon. Well tada.... it happened.
I'm just wondering how much MS is going to try and charge me considering it may have been the system update that caused it.

I already finished it :(
Time for Paper Mario I guess.
If you finished it, play it again, it'd be better than 'no tilt function' paper mario! And surely you can't be surprised! They practically planned them to break, becuase of their shoddy make! If you want to play the (few decent) 360 exclusives, buy an elite, at least it won't keep breaking on yyou. But on second thoughts, don't bother, just buy your games for the PS3.

Trust me resistance can only be played so many times before going mad, it just doesn't have that fun appeal after awhile.
I wouldn't play it,I bought the Gamestop extended warranty for my 360 and if breaks down then all i have to do is bring it in and get a new one
do you have ur 360 hooked up to a power strip? -supercharged-
Yup. I already checked to make sure the light on the power strip is green when I turn it on. Right now I have the 360 totally unplugged from everything and I am going to fire it up to see how it goes before I go to bed. I've heard this works sometimes. We shall see.
EDIT: Ok, I have it hooked up to a power strip yes. I have a big Monster "clean power" strip that all my stuff is hooked up to. I thought you where talking about the power supply. oops.

Try plugging it straight into a wall outlet and pick the power brick off the ground so its suspended or not touching anything. It may work may not some people say it has. Then just mess around with a few things and see if you can get it to work. I'm sure u dont wanna wait for a box to send your 360 in then wait even longer to get it fixed ect ect.
Or you could just do this

Ah, yes, do it the russian way. Just hit it and it will work. LOL.You could always try the towel method. I'm no expert, and if you dont trust me, then dont do it. What I've heard is that people wrap their 360 in 2 towels (or more) and leave the 360 on for a 30 - 45 minutes. After that, unwrap, turn off, let cool for 20 minutes and cross your fingers....sounds like a cooking recipe. Anyway, another useful tip if you dont mind waiting: check the back of the 360 and look for the date of production..er, production date...something like that. If your 360 was made around October of 2005, then Microsoft may replace it for FREE. When you call the support line, make sure you tell them that date.

Wow, you are an idiot, aren't you? The financial ramifications of producing a system that fails almost ALL the time is grounds for a recall. The failure rate is somewhere above the average for electronics, at about 4-6%. I can believe how unbelievably bloated people assume the situation is. Grow up.
The sad thing about this is that I was actually expecting it to break down. I was not of the mind set that it would be just fine. I have been thinking for a long time "its only a matter of time". Solely based on how many people have had problems with it.
The manufacture date on this one is 12-4-2005. I got it on the 22nd before x-mas that year. Hopefully MS is good to me and sucks up the cost to repair.
Although if they send me a replacement I am going to hvae to deal with my XBL content not working unless I am hooked up to XBL.
Ding $139.90 to get it repaired.
"This is a hardware failure, not a software failure. The update that you applied did not cause this issue." - riiiiight.
Bgrngod
wow that sucks man. you pay $400 for a system and less than 1.5 years later it breaks down now you have to fork over another $140 to get it repaired? my advice is when you get your new 360 back sell it on ebay and just stick with ps3. you wont have to deal with these problems.

Those **** shouldn't charge for their product breaking down, especially when its such a widespread problem. Factory recall anyone?
Apparently they know why this is happening. The heat warps some kind of glue that binds the mobo to the GPU/CPU, causing them to disconnect (can't remember specifics). They've found the root of the problem, its a manufacturing mistake, there's no reason you should have to pay for that. I bet if you make a real stink they will replace it or fix it for free. Sometimes it pays to be a pushy, aggresive jerkoff. Too bad it happened to you man :(

Yeah but when your extended warranty and M$ warranty expires... Your seriously ****ed. You will say bye bye to your $140.I knew exactly what you were going to say.
The very same thing happened to me. I got rainbow 6 vegas on the 22nd of december, I had been waiting for it and was really looking forward to playing it over chrimbo, but when I got home my box wouldn't boot up and I had to send it off. I got it back at the end of January, and I was well annoyed.
Actually, one of the only good things about sending your box of for repair is the fact that they move all your data to the box they send back to you, so you'll be able to play all your content offline just fine. The sad thing about this is that I was actually expecting it to break down. I was not of the mind set that it would be just fine. I have been thinking for a long time "its only a matter of time". Solely based on how many people have had problems with it.

Why don't you try wrapping your 360 in a towel, i heard that works.Evil-Zero86
It seems a bit primitive but it works. Link.
I am going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau as soon as I figure out how to do so. This really is pretty retarded. I was hoping that MS would do something about it, in terms of a recall or free repairs, before my box broke down. Now I have to cross my fingers that they will retroactively refund peoples money or something..... again.
What is the deal with that towel trick? Does it permanently fix it?
The wierd thing about this is that it broke down after only being on for a few minutes. If it really was a heat issue, then I don't know if it would have gotten hot enough in the few minutes I had it on before it died. Does it have anything to do with sitting it vertically vs setting it horizontal?

The problem with that is that I only have 2 games on my PS3 and nothing else out yet that interests me. At least I have my Wii for current games to keep my happy. Still gotta get through Zelda:TP and Paper Mario.
I posted information about this phenomenon before, but I will again. So here goes...
I reviewed the last 100 voluntary reviews for each of the "next generation" consoles on cnet. I looked for:
1) How many negative ratings (5 or less out of 10) each system got.
2) How many of the voluntary reporters claimed that their system broke.
I found:
Xbox360: 18% gave a negative rating, and 21% reported their console had to be repaired.
Playstation 3: 17% gave negative rating, and 2% reported their console had to be repaired.
Wii: 8% gave negative rating, and 1% reported their console had to be repaired.
I rechecked again today 6 of the most recent 20 reveiws are still reporting breakage of the Xbox360. None of the most recent 20 for the other two systems.
The defect rate is somewhere around 15-20%, and is clearly and significantly higher than for the other two systems. So it shouldn't surprise anyone when they get the ring of death.
