From Kotaku:http://kotaku.com/5879202/sources-the-next-xbox-will-play-blu+ray-may-not-play-used-games-and-will-introduce-kinect-2

Microsoft will upgrade its disc technology for its next Xbox from DVDs to Blu-Ray discs, catching up to rival Sony, games industry sources tellKotaku.

Sony's PlayStation 3 currently supports Blu-Ray, which can contain 25 or 50GB of data compared to DVD's 9GB.

But that disc detail could be far less impactful to the next generation of game consoles than the assertion I've heard from one reliable industry source that Microsoft intends to incorporate some sort of anti-used game system as part of their so-called Xbox 720.

It's not clear if that means that the system wouldn't play used games or how such a set-up would work. Obvious approaches—I'm theorizing here—like linking a copy of a game to a specific Xbox Live account could seemingly be foiled by used-game owners who would keep their system offline. My source wasn't sure how Microsoft intended to implement any anti-used game system in the new machine.

A push in any way by Microsoft against used games would likely be cheered from publishers sick of seeing retailers like GameStop crow about their revenues from the sale of used games. But it could potentially anger consumers who rely on buying cheaply-sold used games or even pass games to relatives or friends.

One source familiar with Microsoft's plans for the new Xbox said Microsoft plans to ship their new Xbox with a new version of its red-hot Kinect hands-free sensor system. The new Kinect would contain an on-board processor, a feature originally intended for the first Kinect. That processor would enable a new Kinect to more effectively detect users' motions.

I'm also hearing that Microsoft is interested in making a smaller controller for its new console.

And what of gaming siteIGN's reportthat the machine could be six times more powerful than the Xbox 360? From some industry sources I'm hearing that that's the right ballpark and that Microsoft is estimating they might even get to 8x the Xbox 360. But another insider clarified that no one in the industry has development kits yet and that any talk about specs right now is still hypothetical.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmm... interesting. Although the "no-used" games I think would be a big turn off for some consumers, if it's true, that is.

**moderator's note**

With all the duplicate topics on this, I'm adding a link to an IGN Article in here as well.

No used games means I won't be buying the next Xbox. Or maybe I'll get the console used.

There's no way they could lock out all used games; I have 'used' games right now that I take great care of and they look brand new. How would the system even know?

Use of Blu-ray didn't affect BC for PS3. It's more about A) emulation or B) chipset inclusion.

Blu-ray and Kinect 2 were pretty much guarenteed.

However the no-used games is probably not going to happen. Aftermarket game sales drive console sales.

It would almost be impossible, don't you think? How would they distinguish between a new and used game? Require a code like they do with PC games? I guess that would work, unfortunately...

Rumors, rumors and more rumors. Until I hear from a concrete source, such as MS theirselves saying that the console will not support used games I won't make a judgement. If MS decides to eliminate used games they will be making a sad mistake and will ruin themselves next generation, which definitely makes me think this is a rumor and nothing more.

No used games, no sale. Ever.

It's OK if they're going digital, but if they retain physical copies and force you to buy new, I will quite happily forget their console exists.

Blu-ray will happen. Kinect 2.0 integrated in the system will probably happen.

No used games...doubtful. It would be really hard to do unless you enter a code every time you put a new game on the system. People aren't going to put up with that crap. Sure once in awhile no big deal, but with every game. All MS would be doing is shooting themselves in the foot. I know lots of people who only buy used games.

lol. Funny $hit right here. No used games on the next Xbox? Yeah right. No way that's happening. Even I buy new games only but I still wouldn't support a system like that. Of course, if I was a cow and this was Sony I would have no problem with it.

The used games thing won't effect me, but it's unfortunate if true. Also, I hear Kinect 2.0 will detect finger motion, which would enable Minority Report style controls in games (typing, trigger pulling, etc.)

ya companies keep trying to take away the rights from the consumer. I love having the freedom to trade games with friends or at stores. One thing i hate about pc is how little you can do with a game after your done with it. Thats one main reason why i hate DD. Unless the game is at a huge discount i rather buy a hard copy. But taking away freedom from us is not fair. Eb games and used game stores and rental services will be up in arms and might not even sell 720 stuff in protest.

I buy 95% of my games on launch day, but I do understand your point that it could effect all of us in possibly unexpected ways. Like Gamestop may stop carrying the games, or carry fewer games. And not to split hairs, but I can't recall ever wanting to buy a game and not being able to find it. I'm a pre-order sort of guy.

I rarely ever buy games used but if that is true than f*ck MS. Only way that can be acceptable is if they have bi-yearly sales that rival the deals on Steam

LOL, this has to be a joke. If this is true about their next Xbox console not being allowed to play used games, then Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot. No way am I buying their next gen console if that happens.

I mostly buy games new for some reasons (like to avoid smears & who knows what other people have done to the discs, etc.), but what happens if a retail game that I like in the future turns to be out of print for brand new? Then what?

Congrats, Microsoft! You just committed suicide & forced a lot of gamers like us to buy a Wii U &/or a PS4 over your next system. Have fun being the odd console out.

I doubt they'll use Blu-ray, isn't that a Sony trademark? Maybe they'll create a new type of Media like they're doing with the Wii-U.

[QUOTE="rasengan2552"][QUOTE="DragonfireXZ95"][QUOTE="rasengan2552"]It would effect you whether you like or not. For it not to effect you then you would have to buy every game at launch. you can't always find games brand new.

Old games you can't find would be a moot point if the system went all DD. Finding a new copy of the game would be redundant if it was available on DD.

I never mentioned anything about DD.

Consoles will go all DD at one point. Just like PC is now pretty much. It's bound to happen.
