Yeah that's pretty jacked up, BC is one of my top priorities for new systems, especially PlayStation. Since my largest library is PlayStation games, this really is starting to tick me off, they better not pull that crap with their next SKU or something here in the US.

everyone in the world already has a PS2 , and no one would use the PS3 to play PS2 games since they already have a PS2 unless they sold it or traded it in which they go suckered on the trade in value. the PS2 price shoud drop tp 99.99 this season

Okay, honestly now, who the hell is going to buy a PS3 if they havent even owned a PS2 yet? If they dont have a PS2, then that means no PS2 games, which means B/C is not important. Sony is made up of a bunch of retards, we know. But stop this damage control. A lower price is what we wanted and now we're getting it. Dont put a negative spin on this.

I guess that's what they had to do to the 40 gig version to make it cheaper. It sucks because I would still want to play my PS2 games on it.

You people are very mis-informed, the 80GB uses Software Emulation, and so will the 40GB....

Since the PS3 firmware updates are all the same, meaning just one locally for ALL consoles, when a person buys the 40GB and downloads their first firware, they'll be able to play...

What the guy meant was it won't have the EE chip either...just not in those words...

don't believe me?Time will prove this...

What's really dumb is that all they did is disable the emulation software to make the 80GB appear to be a "premium" product. After all, is 40GB more space, two more USB ports, and memory card slots really worth $200 more? Well, if you throw in the "ability" to play PS2 games, then in theory it should appear to be worth $200 more. But it's really a bad deal for customers because they're essentially paying $200 more for the emulation software, which should be free.

If I were Sony, I would re-think that concept ASAP. If they do not fix this problem in a firmware update, I'm sure it won't be long before savy hackers release a custom firmware that does.

From what Ive read at Neogaf, the Software emulator requires the GS chip (PS2 graphics) that is in the current 80gb PS3s and the Euro 60gbs. The new 40gb drops the GS chip apperently, so no.

PS3 takes another step closer to being this generations N64.

At least it has MGS4, God of War 3, and FFXIII. I'll invest in one when all of those games are out.

But the thing is you can buy the 60gb (before it runs out of stock) or buy the 80gb. So saying that they dumped Software Emulation is incorrect.

PS: i still think that the 40gb will have software emulation.

That's the real kicker though-- why should you have to pay $200 more for the software to emulate PS2 games? It literally costs Sony nothing to make the PS3 B/C at this point, but they cut the feature from the $399 version just to make the $599 version seem like a more fully-featured product.

Hey Sony, I've got a better idea: instead of gimping the 40GB PS3 with less USB ports and no emulation software, why not actually include more stuff with the $599 version, like an HDMI cable and a Blu-Ray remote?

Okay, honestly now, who the hell is going to buy a PS3 at all? If they dont have a PS2, then that means no PS2 games and no good PS3 games (except for multiplatforms that are better on the 360).

Better luck next generation.

Its aweful how they've stepped on their own foot which is inserted in their own *** buuuut......

They do have a decent point in that bringing the price down without the BC allows more money in the gamer's hands for new titles.

If you're that stuck on playing last gen titles, you should have kept your last gen system.

Or, of course, they have more TVs than they do PS2s.  But no, no one would do that, because everything has to be the way you describe it, and nobody is allowed to do anything different.  Of course not.

There's no software emulation for the GS.  The EDRAM bandwidth is more than the PS3 has, even if you combine the XDR and GDDR3 bandwidth (assuming that were even possible).

Or you can play them for free on the coinsole you had when you bought them. Oh, did you sell it? I guess you didn't love it thatmuch. You should sell the games to and play games that the system was built for.

Wanna bet?!? Many people who bought a PS3 sold there PS2. Same thing happened when people bought a PS2, they sold their PS1. I know I did. How many people still have their PS1? Mine barely even worked. I had to turn it completely upside for it to play the game. What a piece of junk.

i had 4 ps2s brake on me so i dont own a ps2 anymore. when i bought my 60gb ps3 it was a necessity for me that it could play ps1 ans ps2 games. also i hate having all up consoles hooked up and lying around just play games. i still own a xbox but i ended up putting it away cause i can play xbox games on my 360.
