Oh, wow...another rail shooter for the Wii. (I'm getting tired of this)

So I'm checking out the latest issue of GI and I come across this pic of a game. I say "Hey, that looks cool." The name of the game is Ghost Squad.

Then I read about how the game is on rails. Not only that but the game isn't very new either.

First, welcome to the mid-90's, where on-rails are still considered cool and Terminator 2 is flying high at the arcade.

Why? Why are devlopers still making on-rail shooters? Does anyone care? The Wii has the ability to offer the best controld for FPS' and until MP, we haven't seen jack. Just weak, dumbed down, hand me off games that make me wonder if I should have even bought the thing. RE4 is great, so great I beat it 8-10 times on my GC.

Ports, ports, ports ans more ports. SPM is about the only new game that I think is worth mentioning.

I have supported the Wii and people here will testify to that.

I am, however, starting to lose my patience.

Ok, maybe I was too harsh but all I'm seeing is those examples, not counting games like Manhunt 2. I know that Super Mario Galaxy, SSBB and Metroid are going to be great games and worth owning. But for the time being, I don't see many games that would be worth mentioning. I'm feeling that Wii is getting games that are worth playing on a handled, not on a console. I want to see more "serious" games, games that have "depth" and a real story. I was having my hopes for Red Steel but sadly it flopped pretty hard. My hype also fell when the rumors spread that HAMMER was cancelled.

IronMaidenLives

SPM is actually a Gamecube game- arguably a "port."

Yeah, I mean, I don't mind an on-rails shooter here or there, but given the fact that the Wii is lacking in so many other genres as of now, it's surprising to see that developers are willing to bring another game from a niche genre instead of the current big genres.

First of all, unless you count the shooting scenes in Rayman, there's only one other rail shooter in development for the Wii. I happen to like rail shooters for their visceral, white-knuckle, twitch gameplay. And just because agame genre hit its apex in the mid 90s, that means it's not worth revisiting? Well, I guess nobody should make any more one-on-one fighting games anymore then, or RPGs, or side-scrolling action games, or FPS games for that matter.

If you want to play a good FPS, wait for MP3, or buy an Xbox. I'm getting tired of the whining

Tired of the whining? That's nice. This is the first time I've complained about the Wii so deal with it.

Now you're comaping on-rails to RPG's? Hmmm, one can expand it's depth. The other cannot. Guess which one can, buddy?

Sure. Let me go right out there and buy another system. I don't have enough anyway.

Does it play like Time Crisis or Virtua Cop? If so, then I can't see the problem, I love VC.

Maybe it was developed for the Gc and decided to ad Wii controls later, Which is what happended with Zelda except their was no reason to release Spm on the Gc.

I am not sure if you realize it but Ghost Squad was an arcade game simliar to time crisis except with a rifle. I agree that RE going on rails is crap but crying about a game thats main gameplay was on rails in the arcade and is being exactly translated on the Wii is kind of dumb.

*Sigh* Are you going to blame Nintendo for what other companies are making? Is Nintendo going to just turn them away because it doesn't live up to there standards of innovation? They already had troubles with third party support, but now that they are actually getting some, they're isn't enough innovation.

Well, Nintendo showed the devs how they could get away with repackaging an old console with a waggle stick and so developers repackaged all their old games with waggle stick support. This isn't really a surprise.

Except consoles weren't based upon motion sensing. Not only that, but most games could never sense the 3-D part of the sensing. This game is not even made by Nintendo, look at the games upcoming by Nintendo and you'll see how good they look.

That tilt controller is MUCH more like Sony's than Nintendo's.

I mean, the Wii remote is separated for maxin relaxin, it has up down left right tilt and forward back every other direction.

And it has a pointer. Which controller in the past had a pointer?

Nah the DS is pretty decent for a handheld. The touch screen controls combined with the dual screen and longer battery life = win. Sure there's lots of junk on it but also some pretty cool games. However, an innovative handheld is a different proposition to an unimaginative, and quite frankly overpriced, Wii.

Hold up. Unimaginative? Your right, there other 2 consoles are much more innovative. Look at those updated graphics. And umm..... What else is new? Oh, you can turn off the system with your controller! Yay innovation! (Don't get me wrong, I like the 360, but it nor the PS3 is that innovative) Overpriced? Your right. I'd much rather pay 749 dollars Canadian, without tax, for the PS3 or how about 600 dollars for the 360. Or I could go out and spend a couple hundred more and buy a multi-functional gaming PC that not only plays a huge selection of games, new and old, but it can do many other things as well.

I also understand that point of view, but software attach rates show people are buying consoles by the dozen and 1 or 2 games for them. The thing that I guess annoys me the most is that I was looking forward to some new and clever stuff from Ninty as a publisher. When I saw the line up for the next year pretty much all I saw was the same old stuff with motion controls. That really annoyed me.

On top of that people call it a 'cheap' console. Once you have bought all the gadgets for it and a coupel of games it's actually more expensive (in the UK) than a 360 premium with two (admittedly bundled) games! How they justify this on top of the game pricing policy I just don't know.

Eh. I play it on an HDtv too. I haven't noticed lag since I got component cables.

Some games do look pretty crappy that big, though.

It could just be on my TV, I don't know. I don't have access to another one to try it out on :(. Still, after TraumaCentre I have been looking for something showing the same degree of imagination and just not finding it. Looking forward i'm not seeing anything either (except maybe Mario Galaxy, but one game does not justify a console purchase for me).

[QUOTE="luigigreen"]Wow. Your just grasping at straws. There are a total of TWO on rail games. You could have at least said how it is a kiddy console or something, but just wow. Anyways, I enjoy on rail games. They require reflexes and a steady hand. They were fun in the 90's and I still enjoy a good round of House of The Dead of Time Crisis now and again. If it plays like either of those, then yea, I'm up for it.IronMaidenLives

Fine. I see your point. But it doesn't negate the fact that there have been nothing but rehashes for this system.

Ok, but you there's no way you can blame Nintendo for this. If Nintendo goes out and says that they want 3rd party support, it doesn't mean that they want rehashes. It's the 3rd part developers fault, which is one of the biggest reason the Wii is getting a a bad rap by a lot of people.

Metroid Prime 3 is almost the reason I bought the console. Well, that, the VC, all the Gamecube games, and a few others.

It was an easy buy if you hadn't owned a GC before.

Oh no, Ghost Squad? That brings the total number of on-rails shooters on the Wii up to a staggering....2.

We're all going to die.

I guess retro gaming isn't for me. If I wanted that i'd roll out my old SNES and NES...but I don't.

I'm only using it for games that I didn't play back in the day. Or for a few games I lost.
