It's not the consumers fault that Sony are terrible at marketing games for the PS3.
It's not Sony's game, It's Sega's.
I know it's Sega's game, doesn't matter. MS were advertising GTA IV with the price cut on the 360 this year. Why can't Sony show the actual games that are available on PS3 when they advertise the console instead of showing NO IN GAME FOOTAGE OF ANY GAMES. They think they are cool with edgy adverts that have nothing to do with games. All gamers want is to see what games they can play on the machine they are going to buy. Sony have missed the goal by a wide margin this gen, it's one mistake after another.
And VC was originally a 360 game, but development was switched to PS3. It will probably go back to 360 now as it will be easy to port for obvious reasons, and they need to make their money back.
And Dead Space is the sleeper hit of this generation , let alone 08.
De Blob.AlexSaysisn't de blob like the same as elefunk? i hate those games. fun at first, then it feels like work.

It's not that Sony or Sega are terrible at marketing games, this one was never expected to sell well to begin with. Japanese games have always been niche titles over her, with the exception of the obvious Final Fantasys, Zeldas and Pokemons.
Most gamers here in North America would much prefer getting a mediocre shooter with gore, rather than a masterpiece with an anime look. It is ENTIRELY their fault, if this game isn't doing well.

Comparing the advertising done for a very established IP, that has sold in the millions, to a completely new IP, in a very niche market, on the smallest console base this gen... Do you not see how silly that is?Valkyria Chronicles isn't a sleeper hit because the definition of "sleeper hit" is an unexpectedly successful game, not a good but unpopular gameCherokee_JackIt can be unexpected success or recognition. If a game thats not on anyones radar ends up being a huge critical hit I think that counts as a sleeper hit. It works the same for a game that unexpectadely sells alot of copies.

de blob is a platformer

Now you're just reading off of Wikipedia. :P Anyway, I think most people knew about VC, I just don't think they were expecting much from it. For it to turn out as well as it did was unexpected for most people. I think that qualifies it.

That's the true definition, yes. Although most people believe that good games that have gone unnoticed are sleeper hits.
Kind of like the whole "ego" thing.

There is a big difference with Valkyria and GTA 4. GTA 4 reaches a broader audience and if MS is going to advertise a price cut then they may as well advertise one of the most anticipated titles of 2008. The only one to blame for no advertising for Valkyria Chronicles is Sega. You can't expect Sony to pay for every third party title out there.Dead SPace and Braid, i mean in what other game do you chase a princess that is actually the atomic bomb?Dead-Memoriesshe isnt the atomic bomb she is a princess that tim was so obsesed a bout he scared her away

One word: SEGA. Considering the standard of their other most recent titles, this game truly is a diamond in the ruff. VC was not well hyped either, where as Dead Space was. I would say VC is hands down the sleeper hit of the year.
Edit: Unless you count downloadable games, and I'm just not intrested in stuff like Braid. Dosn't help I can't stand the lead designer.

Wold of Goo. Nobody saw it being that good. nintendofreak_2maybe on consoles, no wonder...Wii version was a port, but among PCgamers? It had insane ammounts of hype in indie scene, everybody who had any idea about indie games knew it and knew it would be epic.
Anyway, my pick: Sins of a Solar Empire
