I know UT3 is going to be a great and fun game and im getting it on day one.. But forgive my Noobishness but what in the worlds are mods?! I have no clue about PC gaming because i was raised on console gaming so i have no idea what mods are.. I keep hearing people say that UT3 for PS3 will be great because of "Mods" being done on a console, me personally i want the game because it looks wickedly fun and im a huge fan of Gears of war.

So Im just wondering, can someone in a nutshell explain what Mods are exactly and how will it make the game better?! Thanks

Ever hear of Counter Strike? Thats a mod of Half Life and people are still playing it today after 10 years. Mods are custom costumes, maps, areas, levels, etc made by us the players. Say for example that the last level of Mario is level 10. With the use of mods players can then make brand new levels 11, 12, 13, 14, etc... In short, mods make games last longer. A LOT longer.

mods are user created content....very big with PC games...which get them for nearly every game...

many PC games let you make your own maps, chracters, vehicals, weapons, and so on...

this wiki page will describe it better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod_%28computer_gaming%29

also, I have to point out that I doub that the PS3 mods will work very well...certainly never as well as on a PC...mods work on the PC, because the PC is a completly open platform, thats simply not the case with a PS3, or any console for that matter.

I'm just saying what my experience with mods have been. Most of them are garbage and you never know what the maker is going to slip into the program. Maybe things have changed since the old Quake days but even stuff like Team Fortress would screw up my computer.

they r great if u can find a good mod, but boring otherwise unless u know how to make them or have a group to play them with. ps on the ps3 u can't make the mods u download them from the pc ppl to use on the ps3 because they use the same engine. hopefully they'll have something on 360 verison, like a menu that acesses epic servers not xbl and allows u to download thro them to the net. which i think would work because it doesnt involve live or MS.

Dude, you're supposed to check the thing for viruses before you download the thing. I've download hundreds of mods for various games and never had any problems caused by them.

the biggest problem with the UT3 PS3 mods is this...they are dependent on the PC community to make them...the actual Unreal Editor is being released only with the PC version...and I cant see why someone with the PC version, would make stuff for a version of the game he doesnt even have....

and most of all....you cant access game files with a PS3...and thats gonna limit modding a lot.

The PS3 will only support mods Epic allows the PS3 to use though, so its still a somewhat closed system.

basically allow a greater deal of customisation in games. It's not a big deal that the Ps3 is getting them but the cows are getting excited because the ps3 has no games

Many mods do full blown conversions (though admittedly its not likely the PS3 will see these). They really are that big of a deal.

Sigh.

That's not what mods do genius.

Here's a tip. If you download something with an EXE file in it, don't open it.

Cali3350

Those are just examples of mods that just add new content to the game - many mods change much/all of the fundamental gameplay, allowing for totally new, well, games to be made from other games.

So, for example, Half-Life (a sci-fi shooter) has mods that make it into a squad-based tactical shooter (Counter-Strike), a WW2 shooter (Day of Defeat), a survival-horror game (BrainBread), a Medieval deathmatch game (Pirates, Vikings and Knights), and countless others.

Mods can effectively add limitless replay value to a game, or allow players to tailor a game to their own tastes. Some mods even serve as entire sequels to games, such as the ridiculously amazing Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age.

Oh, and mods can also patch and restore missing/cut content from games, allowing players to see the original/intended ideas for certain games - such as the KOTOR 2 Restoration Project (which will totally redeem KOTOR 2).

Mods are modifications. A team of people will modify a game and change it. Using the same engine, they create a new game. They generally are not of the highest quality, but some have become quite popular. Of course the best part is that they tend to be free.

"When it's done", apparently.
It's been 'almost out' for over two years now, but it looks like they've only got a handful of bugs to iron out, and they've already released beta versions of it. It'll hopefully be released after the holiday season.

As for why everyone hates it, it's because of the horribly butchered ending. Other than that, it was better than KOTOR 1 in almost every way.

Well, they add new content and extend game's life. Of course the coolest mods are total coversions, which bassicaly turn the game into something completely diffrent. But then again, those come out 3 years after the game is out and are much more hardware hungry the original (which means they won't run on PS3 anyway).. But even merely additional maps are something really cool.

JiveT does not know what he is talking about. Virus can come in anything that you download off the web. Avi files, zip files, pdf, word, xls, rar, anything.... Mods is "one of things" that make pc gaming great. Look at Dungeon Siege, Halflife, Starsiege Tribes, Unreal, ..... yeah mods are also good for rpg and rts, not just fps. As for virus... majority of them is written for Windows. Since ps3 is not running on Windows code, the virus is useless.

There probably isn't. You know why?

If something is dodgy, a mod site is probably not going to put it up, or there will at least be some warning. People don't download these things off Warez sites you know, there are large, well run and reputable sites which organize and monitor this stuff.

And if it's a dodgy EXE, a lot of people run virus scans.

He's making it up or is new to technology. I've never had a problem with MODS for my PC and I'm really looking forward to what people can come up with for the PS3 version of Unreal. This is huge for console gamers. X360 fans can only hope MS follows in Sonys steps in taking the intiative to open up their system.

I would like to see the console-ites getting mods.

Also, I've never had a mod screw up my system. Ever. I've had games that have done that...I'm looking at you Mechwarrior 4.

I wonder how the mods will get distributed. I hope that there is a centralized server for them, getting them through user proliferation would be a huge pain and kill a lot of the mod scene.

JiveT... you're one funny dude, Viruses in mods.. I lol'd.

You do know that if a person wants you to try their mod they have give personal contact info right? Why would some one plant a viruses in their mod and then give away their email address?

And mods are the reason why GTA will always be better on PC. And any other game for that matter.

Anyone who insults mods isn't a gamer, no excuses.

Hopefully the PS3 mods will allow people to develop things for download from the PSN for a small fee.

You can never start charging for PC mods but hopefully Sony wont make that mistake and people can start making some money for all their hard work..... why people would want to create these things for free is beyond me.

[QUOTE="Sir-Marwin105"][QUOTE="JiveT"]Mods are something geeks make to screw up your computer. Enjoy trying to figure out what the heck has happened to your PS3 cows! Welcome to the world of viruses n h4xs!JiveT

Why do you like spinning things?

I'm just saying what my experience with mods have been. Most of them are garbage and you never know what the maker is going to slip into the program. Maybe things have changed since the old Quake days but even stuff like Team Fortress would screw up my computer.

you obviously fail at using a computer. Just stick to your 360 where you have to pay for extra pictures, maps, whatever

Mods dont screw up your computer - your own incompetence does.

You're seriously going to tell me sticking a bunch of files in a folder creates a virus? Alrighty...

Did I tell you that? A virus can be put in any executable file and even if it is not a virus it can still cause your computer to lock up. I can't believe there isn't a hermit here who has never been burned by a dl'd map or mod.

since I have an IQ greater than 50, I never been "burned" by a mod.

For the same reason people make open-source software, make their music avaliable free for download, spend hours making a wallpaper just to give it away for coping or post quality information on a wikipedia article.

You CAN charge for you PC mods(most games licenses doesn't cover that), but most people prefer to give something to the commuinity.

mods for NWN

If you put together all free user created mods, NWN can easly top 500h of gamming, above those of officialy sold expansions. And that's just considering the ones hosted in that site. There's still Fileplanet, Filefront and even GS host mods for some PC games.

Not everyone is a money hungry Bitc*.

Thanks

ChristopherM80

What are mods? Let's just say it is one way to turn the dev's stock retail game into a better game. The community will turn the game into what they see is fit, not the developer. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory couldn't have survived without ETPub & ETPro.

Mods are EVERYTHING.

:P

And UT3 on PS3 probably wont even be able to support total conversions, let alone higher poly characters and maps.
