I got my brand new Surface tablet the other day, and I have been trying some games on it. The Windows Store is a bit scant in terms of quality games at the moment, but some of the good titles out right now include Soulcraft, Adera, Wordament, Armed, Angry Birds: Space, to name a few. All of these titles are free, some of them even include Xbox Live support (like achievements, cloud saving, etc.).
Recently, because of two jobs and school, I haven't been able to play as many PC games as I would like. I just haven't been able to sit down in front of a computer and play games for extended periods of time. But interestingly enough, I have been playing a lot of Adera (which is an adventure game like Myst) on my Surface recently, on train rides to school and work.
Mobile gaming on smartphones and tablets are the future - they are perfect for commuters and people with limited time to game. They are easy to digest, but at the same time, can still deliver some of the production values I seek from big budget, mainstream PC games. For example, Adera features a story, as well as some voice acting.
I may be a hardcore PC gamer that once eschewed mobile gaming, but I now see the point. Furthermore, with big budget games becoming riskier for publishers to develop and market, cheaper mobile games are less of a risk and can still provide almost nearly the same amount of entertainment value that a big budget game can, while preserving a publisher's gross margins.
I hope to see more games like Adera on Windows tablets in the future, but Windows 8/RT is off to a good start in terms of gaming. Of course, the options are even greater in iOS and Android.
