Old GS reviews

I was looking GS's reviews on games I loved as a kid. These games left some of my fondest memories in gaming but seeing the scores GS gave them makes me think about irrelivant the review scoring system is. eg. I loved croc legend of the gobbo's but I seen GS gave it a 4.2 which today would mean awful.

What games did you love as a kid that gamespot gave a low score to.

They gave a 5.7 to Atomic Bomberman on the PC :(

Godzilla Destroy All Monsters: Melee.

Game spot gave it a 6.4! I loved that game to death. Sure the story wasn't that interesting, but the gameplay was great. Multiplayer was a blast on it too. It should of gotten an 8.5 imo.

Streets of Rage 2, one of the best games of all time, got a 7.8 here :o

The neverhood (GS gave a 4.9, user reviews are over 9), Mario Kart 64..I know there are more fail reviews than these, I can't think of them though.

Suikoden 2, one of my most favorite JRPGs of all time got 7.6

Harry Potter on the Pc got a low score here I think. I loved that game as a kid

War Of The Monsters ? dam Used to Love that game, good times.

Too many examples as I was playing a lot of games in my Jr. High and High School years (which wasn't too long ago as I'm 20 turning 21 this year).

Some examples below:

Gauntlet Legends on Nintendo 64 and Dark Legacy on PS2

Zatch Bell! Mamodo Battles on GameCube

Naruto: Clash of Ninja series on GameCube and Wii

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai on GameCube

Diablo 2, Deus Ex etc etc

Majora Mask 8.3

Bombmerman Hereos 6.7

Bomberman 64 4.6

Yoshi Story 5.3

That was back in the day when a score of 5 meant the game was worth playing but woefully average, and a game in the 8 region meant was fantastic. Games over 9 were games that actually deserved to be called some of the best of the generation.

I played Croc on the Playstation, and it scored a 5.8 at Gamespot. The score is pretty much on point. They don't trash the game. In fact, they say you probably want to play it, but it's not all it could have been.

Gamespot is slowly creeping its way back to this styIe of scoring. Look at the review for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. 7.5 and they said it was a great game for the most part, and pretty much worth a purchase. Several years ago, even a low scoring 8 game would be treated with caution.

Yeah it got a 6.4 but it was one the best multiplayer games on N64, I even played it again with friends a while ago because its so great with 4.

Age of Empires got a 6.8. I don't get why the reviewer kept comparing it to Civilization. He must not have realized AoE is and RTS not a TBS.

Mach Rider: 3.0 (Released 1985; Reviewed 2007)

Pokemon Stadium: 5.7
Rampage World Tour: 5.0
Shining in the Darkness: 6.0 (Released 1991; Reviewed 2007)
Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy: 5.9 (I disagree I actually reviewed it lower I gave it a 4.0)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES): 2.7 (Released 1989; Reviewed 2007)
Turok Rage Wars: 5.8
Yoshi's Story: 5.3
Zelda II: Adventure of Link 6.9 (Released 1988; Reviewed 2007)

For Mach Rider, Shining in the Darkness, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Zelda II: Adventure of Link Gamespot didn't review them when they released they used current review standards to review games that were as far back as 1985.

Edit* I only included games that got below 7.0 because 7.0 and higher is still considered Good.

closest thing you have this gen on consoles is Darkstar one for the Xbox 360

Wind waker, they gave it a 9.3 when it deserves an 11! :(

Twisted Metal 2 and Dino Crisis 2. Those games both deserved 10s but GS only gave them 9s, the fuggin trolls!

Geist was pretty awesome as well. It's biggest flaw was being exclusive to the Gamecube. That controller sucked for FPS.

'Tis true, and a 7 rating meant a lot more back then than it does now, atleast on Gamespot. Btw, we NEED a current gen Geist game. There's sooooo much potential there. I know there was a handheld version but that's not exactly what I was hoping for.

I'm currently loving Game of Thrones on the PS3...if I had to listen to other reviews (oddly enough GS gave it a 7) I would have steered clear.

Got a 6.6 here and honestly maybe it wasn't outstanding, but I had a lot of good times with it. Someday maybe I try Shivers 2 (which got a 8.7).

Gamespot reviewed them in 2007 using current standards.

Gamespot also reviewed Legend of Zelda and Sim City (SNES) but I didn't list those because they were still higher then 7.0 which is Good.

Only got a 4.3/10

I feel that before games were reviewed more correctly, now if its advertised well then it will probably get at least a 7.5

Vanguard Bandits on the PS1 got a 6.2, I liked it so much I got a second copy I never opened. It is worth about $200 now but probably would never sell for that high.

Quest 64 - 5.4

Mischief Makers - 6.7

Dark Savior - 6.7 - game had about 18 different endings based on different events you did and the time you did them in. I absolutely played this game way too many times. I have probably beat this game about 20 times just trying to get the different endings. I had so much fun with this game and I still do to this day. I will admit the controls are not the best but hell I loved it.

Parasite Eve was a masterpiece for me, easily a 9-10 game but GS rated it with a 7. And I don't know why because for its time the game had a really interesting story, amazing graphics and the gameplay was very clever by combining action with turn based.

Virtua Fighter Kids got a 6.6 and between Virtua Fighter, Fighting Vipers, and Fighters Mega Mix I had a blast... man do I miss my Sega Saturn now.

From what I've seen of Gamespot's older reviews they used to actually do a good job reviewing and using most of the scale. A score of above 5 actually meant it was above average back then, and made the 9's all the more important. Now of course thanks to publisher ad revenue 8 is average so the system is grossly skewed.
