Its a logistical thing. Imagine if changing your gamertag was free? We would literally have thousands (if not millions) of people changing their GT on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. The price is to discourage people from changing their GT.

Im actually being serious when asking this, but why on earth does MS charge to change your gamertag. I mean i could ALMOST see the point if you could create a whole new profile BUT NO, you cant! the only thing you can change is the name of your gamertag! With the PS3 i can sit there and create PSN IDs all day long at no charge whatsoever, and PLUS I DONT EVEN PAY FOR ONLINE

So jerks dont sit there all day changing gamertags so they can mess with people and then dodge the bad feedback. It's also so you dont confuse the hell out of your xbox live friends list. If people were changing GT's every second, it would be a chaotic mess.

I could see the point if people did it so they can start over on stats on a game or something, but come on man we pay for xbox live, we should have a right to change the name of our gamertag at no extra costs for cryin out loud

Dude, dont make posts like that, it discredits everything you say. You made a legitimate topic of discussion, but adding in the fact that PSN doesnt cost anything is unnecessary.

Erm, you can create new XBL gamertags for free. You even get free XBL time for doing so.

As for the reason why you can't change it for free - it's basically so you're not ID hopping all the time. It's a discouraging measure - they're not doing so to get a lot of cash, they're doing it so you don't change your gamertag.

If this is a valid concern on MS' part. I don't know. I don't care - I find no reason to change my good ol' gamercard unless I did something stupid like putting a lame, sophomorically "funny" tag or putting my (now ex-) girlfriend's name in there too.

nah. it's about identity. pick one and live with it. free GT changes would mean people constantly switching their GT...which would degrade the community aspect of live. You start changing names constantly and people forget who you are and community is lost.

I like it just like it is.

I like the slippery slope you just used. I mean, people don't have better things to do but to change their gamertags. Why even play the games for the system? Just spend the days/weeks/months/years changing their gamertags.

Exactly. MS addressed this when they first put it in. They dont want people to change their tags, yet still give the option with a cost. Ive changed mine 3-4 times so far. Live isnt cheap and pointless like PSN. MS actaully has reasons for their doings

So now you're comparing a video game system to a forum? It's not unusual to see that here especially with all the ban dodgers. As for the millions of XBL users, it's not like all of them will change their gamertags at once. So therefore, you're using a slippery slope that predicts everything going to crap if one little thing is allowed.

Well if there wasn't any sort of logistical issue don't you think MS would charge less than $8? I mean if we're accepting that thousands of people are going to change their GT if it is free, I think it is reasonable that thousands would still change their GT on a fairly regular basis if it only cost, say 100MP to change your GT.

800 MP is far too much (at least IME) for most people to change their GT more than once or twice (if at all). But I guarentee you both myself and many peopel on my friend's list would have changed their GT multiple times if the cost was lower. The 800MP price-point was most likely to discourage changes rather than maximize profi.s

I believe the reason is Microsoft wanted to prevent people from changing their gamer tag too often. In the computer world there is a thing called a database, gamer tags are stored in a database on Microsoft's server. Microsoft most definitely indexes these gamer tags, indexes speed up searches, however if the gamer tag changes all the time the database has to update the indexes, when this happens allot it slows down the database. For this reason I believe Microsoft was just preventing extra hardware cost and maintenance. They don't allow you to change your gamer tag for free because otherwise 5 and 10 year olds would constantly run around say stupid things and change their gamer tag.

I had 800 points and I changed my name without realizing it cost money. I changed it to a dumbass name when a bunch of friends were over and we were just messing around. Now I'm stuck with this g@y gamer tag because I don't want to spend 10 to change it back.

To everyone saying that it would be chaotic if anyone could just change there gamertag at anytime, why doesn't PS3's online have major problems with this. They can just create new screen names to bug people.shuffleman102

PSN doesn't have a unified friends list like XBL. Gamer tags are alot more meaningfully than PSN user names.

[QUOTE="PBSnipes"]Its a logistical thing. Imagine if changing your gamertag was free? We would literally have thousands (if not millions) of people changing their GT on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. The price is to discourage people from changing their GT.ArisShadows

I like the slippery slope you just used. I mean, people don't have better things to do but to change their gamertags. Why even play the games for the system? Just spend the days/weeks/months/years changing their gamertags.

I assume you weren't here when GS allowed name changes. Back in the day GS allowed users to change their names but removed it because it became so hectic. Imagine how crazy it would get with the millions of XBL users?

Heck, its hard enough keeping with it now.. People constantly change their name on my list..

Its like who theef'n is Mad King Plower 5000 Steak Sauce..

Agreed, I HATE it when people change their names. Even more so if they don't bother to tell anybody. If you have a small list, it may not be a big deal, but when you have a full list, it's a real pain in the azz to try to figure out which of 100 people changed their name. I hate having to ask someone who they used to be. A gamertag is an identity, people know you by it just like they know you in real life by your real name.

Imagine if all your real life friends constantly changed their name.
