Ok so Patrick and Austin were doing a Periscope discussing some Neo info and talking about the September 7th reveal. They both say they have heard internal conversation that Sony is looking at increasing the power in Neo.

LET IT BE CLEAR they are not outright saying this is happening but that it is being looked at. It is not confirmation Neo will be over 4.2 TF

https://www.periscope.tv/w/1MYxNzPpYWoxw

Conversation is around the 6:50 mark. Here is some of what they say

- Sony has looked at upping the power compared to original spec

- There was an internal worry that the Neo may look outdated compared to Scorpio next year

- How much they can adjust Neo before launch, is unknown

- Final dev kits will release around the September 7th reveal

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1260081

Taken from neogaf.

I don't think they can do much outside of increasing clock speed and not by much.

When they built it much like any console it was likely around the peak performance and thermal parameters that could be handled given the form factor. If they're able to get anything more out of it you could expect something like was done with the Xbox One, a 53Mhz boost to the GPU and a 150mhz increase to the CPU etc, nothing dramatic.

It depends on the cost throwing away SoCs that doesn't reach the required working spec i.e. working SoC yields at required specs.

1Ghz GPU might cause working SoC yields to fall, but it's up to Sony to eat the bad yields. Yields improves over time.

That Polaris 10 can go to over 6TF in OC dude,i just don't think the PS4 has the cooling solution for it.

No they build the unit and chose the safes parameters they can operate so they don't have to replace your unit before your 1 year warranty expires, but any OC would be small for that same reason.

It depends on selected foundry and FinFET technology.

Worst case RX-470 (4.9 TFLOPS) working yield is from Global Foundry's 14 nm FinFET.

TSMC's older 16 nm FinFET would be cheaper than the newer 16 nm FinFET+.

NEO's 911Mhz GPU indicates similarity with XBO S's 914 Mhz GPU and TSMC contract.

I can easily see a modest increase in clock speed for CPU and GPU but nothing that would close the gap with Scorpio, or push Neo to be released significantly later than whatever date Sony has been planning internally.

Purely speculating here, but I'd think the best you could hope for would be something along the lines of

CPU: 2.1 GHz --> 2.4 GHz

GPU: 4.2 TFLOP --> 4.5 TFLOP (whatever clock that would require)

And the the 218 GB/sec bandwidth would see a similar bump.

I'd think much more than that, runs the risk of exceeding PS4 Neo's cooling capabilities.

The point would be, not to match Scorpio, but to give developers a little extra help who want to actually target 4K native res in some games.

They just need to delay this thing until next Christmas and then deliver a proper next gen solution with full backward compatibility like MS is doing. I would not fault Sony one bit for doing that.

Dev kits, schmeb kits*

(* I know nothing of console or game development, so you don't have to tell me I'm talking out of my ass. I already know that.)

But increasing the spec does not mean it can do 4K native? Sony will have real problem releasing a 4K native console for 2016 and keeping the price of the Neo at a affordable price.

aren't they essentially working with something similar to RX 480 state 2. Keep that configuration and try to go up a state or two? best case scenario change the memory configuration if it cant handle those states.

Which gets exactly to a larger issue of neo vs scorpio that a lot of people overlook. Its going to be nearly impossible for the Neo to be elevated to rival the Scorpio in power without completely sacrificing any price advantage they may have, and that's ultimately worth a lot more from a market perspective than the actual hardware performance disparity.

It's pretty weird that there are rumors of a spec boost on a console who's specs aren't even confirmed yet. Even the date it will be released is a rumor. Why can't we just wait for at least a confirmation?

No need for a secret sauce. People are just believing that document from December 2015 was set in stone when that has been disputed months ago. If those are the final specs I will eat my hat!

Xbox One S has 16 nm FinFET from TSMC, 12 active CU at 914 Mhz. It's unknown if Xbox One S uses TSMC's older 16 nm FinFET or newer 16 nm FinFET+. XBO S's 914 Mhz IGP sounds like the older 16 nm FinFET instead of 16 nm FinFET+.

RX-460 has 14 nm FinFET from Global Foundry, 14 active CU at 1200 Mhz.

NEO's 911 Mhz IGP clock speed is similar to like XBO S's 914 Mhz IGP clock speed, which leads to TSMC's version of Polaris 10 with 16 nm FinFET.

I think the Neo could go up to 4.5 Tflops as long as the cooling solution is adequate. Honestly, I'm less worried about the GPU and more so the CPU and Ram. Sticking with the same Jaguar Core is going to really be a bottleneck and I'm not happy that it might still only have 8 GB's of ram. The Neo should have at least 12GB's of GDDR5x.

PS4's current form factor can handle up to 150 watts, so the Neo's 16nm based GPU could easily be clocked at 1000 Mhz as long as they don't make the PS4 Neo's form factor much smaller than the OG PS4.

@StrongBlackVine:

Sony surprised us during the initial reveal of the PS4 when they announced it would have 8GB's of GDDR5 ram. We all originally thought it would be 4GB's max.

It really doesn't matter that much, we all get disappointed with consoles. I guess that's due to the way sales PR present us the product. They will come up with some cool words like "super charged pc", "blast processor" or "power of the cloud" and by the end we will realize all it's left is a low mid-end PC that fanboys will damage control until the gen ends.

But Sony shouldn't worry. As things are now they could release a potato and the fanbase will buy it while claiming the "potato engine" crushes a overclocked 1080.

Does it really matter anymore? Slap a Sony sticker on that bad boy and watch it sell millions. PS2 wasn't the strongest and it sold. PS1 wasn't the strongest and it sold. Sony will do everything possible to make sure that it gets near every 3rd party game imaginable. Hell they could implement a new subscription plan called PS++ and include Vue or Now access and make it exclusive to Neo. It would become the ultimate in services for a console. I really hope they didn't mess up their original Neo designs because MS rolled out Scorpio plans 18 months away.

Given that it is apparently a month or so away from being revealed, I find this highly unlikely.

This is why we have competition, it's more than likely that Sony will not have the most powerful home console in the future, they have to think something else. OR try to crank up the specs.

I can't wait to get my neo.

I'm hoping sony created and "Elite" Dual Shock 4 for my neo as well better materials, more lighting features and options.

All my games are going to look an run better on the neo the system will be thinner i can throw out my regular ps4.

Sony is listening or has listened to fans. Microsoft gave us a slim and sony actually went back and dug in deep and upgraded their machine full stop like a beast to compete with the PC market.

Thing is no matter what they do MS will counter by upping Scorpio that much more. After X1 they're determined to be the stronger box this time around. And it's exactly what I thought would happen after I heard about Neo. Sony had this gen in the bag but these new machines make it interesting again. I still think Neo will outsell Scorpio because it will have a head start and because MS doesn't do enough exclusives but with the power advantage it shouldn't be 2 to 1 like it was with the original machines.

If microsoft was so determined why is the xb1 s still weaker than the ps4? Why are they waiting a full year to put out the scoprio and let the ps4 and the neo dominate for entire year of having 2 more powerful consoles than all their offerings. By the time scorpio rolls out your 1 year behind already in sales sony will already have something better on the way microsoft has no idea what they're doing.

Yeah, was editing. But anyway, your first sentence doesn't make much sense. Everybody knows why X1 ended up weaker than PS4. Because they were totally dedicated to 8 gigs of RAM and they thought 8 gigs of GDDR5 wouldn't be doable in time and because it's a Mattrick console, the most incompetent head their gaming division has ever had by a mile. I'm sure they knew prior to PS4's reveal that it had a GPU advantage but apparently they didn't think that mattered considering the 4 gig RAM advantage they'd thought they'd have. That would have changed things quite a but if it had happened but it didn't. And just like is the case now with Neo by the time they knew for sure they had no advantage anywhere it was too late to redo the hardware.

While i find it unlikely that Sony will change the spec, if it's true that the final devkits aren't out until September they means it's definitely not too late to change the spec

Sony might not need exclusives much anymore if they keep this power train coming i might ditch pc entirely.

Right now I have 1080p Monitor and I only want 60 FPS anything over 60 is useless to me.

If the neo does 1080p 60 FPS i have no use for my PC for gaming anymore....none.

Like I said all i care about is my tv monitor is 1080p and my refresh rates are 60 hertz. Anything over 1080p and 60 hertz is useless to me and my hardware in my home. If the ps4 meets that my pc is useless that's just my reality.

Thing is no matter what they do MS will counter by upping Scorpio that much more. After X1 I think they're determined to be the stronger box this time around.

If microsoft was so determined why is the xb1 s still weaker than the ps4? Why are waiting a full year to put out the scoprio and let not only the ps4 but the neo dominate for entire year of having 2 consoles more powerful than all their offerings by the time scorpio rolls out your 1 year behind already in sales.

One possibility would be that MS wants a better cpu than the jaguar and Zen is simply not available yet

If Sony are releasing this they should do so as is and not get dragged into ms games their way. If they can make it sleek and sexy looking that will do, leave ms to make their usual big ugly boxes.

@Star67:

This thread wasn't anti Xbox and all I did was make a joke about improving Neo. You sound fairy defensive of your plastic box and got a bit BH by comments in this thread eh?

Just let it go, it's just a VG console.

Developer Says PS4 Neo Could Launch Before Thanksgiving, Specs Might Be Bumped Up

A new whirlwind of PS4 Neo rumors breezed through today. Just a few hours ago, we reported via Gameblog.fr that the enhanced version of Sony’s latest console could be unveiled at a dedicated event taking place in New York City, on September 7th.

Earlier rumors indicated Tokyo Game Show as a possible venue for the reveal, but then again the PlayStation 4 itself was announced to the world in the same fashion. VICE Gaming just confirmed the report by French site Gameblog, but there’s more: a game developer shared some tidbits on the popular Neogaf board.

User KennyLinder (who is a former Sony employee and also the first one to share that The Last Guardian was moved from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4) confirmed that the date seems plausible as his studio is due to receive final development kits around that time.

He then added in the same forum thread that the system specifications weren’t final until recently and they might have been bumped up, particularly for the amount of RAM, since some first party studios were apparently asking for more. The specs we got from the leaked document are as follows:

  • CPU: Jaguar, 8 cores@2.1 Ghz
  • GPU: 36 Compute Units at 911 Mhz
  • RAM: 8GB GDR5 at 218 GB/s

Finally, he stated that he believes PS4 Neo will launch in November, since they were told the new console will be available to customers before Thanksgiving; this year’s date is November 24.

Considering that the leaked document mentioned that all PlayStation 4 titles released in October 2016 or later should support the PS4 Neo as well as the basic version, this makes perfect sense

That’s certainly earlier than we expected and while Sony might be able to increase Neo’s specifications a little, Microsoft could very well do the same with over a year before the projected launch date for Xbox One Scorpio.

Of course, for the moment being this is just a rumor and should be treated as such. Still, if the September 7th date is correct then we’ll know all about PS4 Neo in less than a month from now.

@StrongBlackVine:

Sony surprised us during the initial reveal of the PS4 when they announced it would have 8GB's of GDDR5 ram. We all originally thought it would be 4GB's max.

GDDR5X chip has 190 pins while normal GDDR5 chip has 170 pins.

@ronvalencia: So could they not make that compatible with a new motherboard layout?

Once again, another thread @tormentos makes without him actually owning the PS4 and will probably not get a NEO despite his blind praise for Sony. LOL

As long as they keep releasing quality exclusives like Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne at playable framerates I couldn't care less what TF it has. That's what my gtx 1080 is for...

I've been playing Witcher 3 Maxed at 1440P, 60< FPS, I can't ever go back to a lower resolution unless the game looks fucking amazing like Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn.
