It is going to have such a varied library of games and software, covering every type and genre, that it will appeal to almost any and every type of gamer.

It sickens me to see some of the total garbage that is coming out for the Wii but consider this: What other console has ever really offered for example Interactive CD ROM or Edutainment type software? I'm talking about stuff like Counting by Numbers or Primary Colours from Red and Blue to Green or Fun Happy Play Time Buddy and his Munchkin Friends (just made up the names but you get the point).

If Wii can capture that completely casual/noob/stupid market, of mums and dads that just buy any rubbish for their children because it says it will teach them something on the box, then the Wii is sorted, and I have not doubt there will be plenty of software (I am so reluctant to say games) on the system that is aimed entirely at those types of consumers.

I suspect it may not actually be a bad thing in the end because just like the DS, if the Wii sells enough units, it will get the 3rd party support and in turn that will help it sell more units and...Eventually that does actually lead to enough support that you are guaranteed to see some great games, just like we are seeing on the DS.

For an old school gamer like me it isn't a lot of fun to have to look at all the trash coming out on the Wii but I am slightly optimistic that in the long run it will be better for everyone. I mean, I love my DS right now, and if the Wii can give me as much satisfaction as that little miracle, well, I think I will be happy...I think...

Why is it scary?  I'd love to learn Japanese or another language from a gaming console.

by your logic all movies should also be garbage that is targeted to parents getting stuff for their kids.

no i don't think so. wii will have games that appeal to all audiences. devs aren't stupid. it would be stupid for them to all develop the same type of games. it's natural for them to target different demographics with their games.

I expect much more at this point for the DS considering its massive sales. I think DQ IX has been one of the few exciting third party games announced but I haven't seen much else.

That's one thing I wish the DS had more of.  The japanese get English training.  Where are those types of titles for the DS in the US?

I've been looking for a DS game with that in mind, but all i found was Japanese to (other language) titles, not the other way round... :(

I'd rather have it on the Wii, as they would have enough storage to potentially teach something without restraint.

Because per capita consumption of DS hardware in Japan is over 3x higher than in North America, perhaps.

actually i think we're going to see a lot more this coming year. SquareEq announced a bunch of games as well and many other devs. seems they have finally been able to pull most of their resources from the psp.

Well, I only say DS because it's easier to write with the stylus than the Wiimote.

How about a software title for the Wii that allows you to download lessons onto your DS so you can keep up with it all on the go?

Remember the limits imposed by that.  You have to sell to people who own both DS and Wii.

Yeah, it's reasonable why they aren't out here.

I can always wish, though.

That would be freaking cool.

And, as lyethar said:  Buy more DSes, maybe we'll actually get some useful edutainment, instead of just great games.  ;)

Yeah, me too.  North America is DS's weakest region.  On the flip-side, I think it's actually got a good shot at being Wii's strongest.

Never say never.  Just keep expectations somewhat connected to objective measurements.  But I don't need to tell you that.

It's not really a worry. Actually the DS has some great software like Brain Training etc that I actually love.

As long as the Wii doesn't get too many rubbish games, that would even pale next to interactive CD ROM titles, then it won't really be too much of a worry. Especially if those games encourage sales and that brings more 3rd party support and a better selection of good games all round...

I don't know what kind of gamer I am, but the Wii certainly hasn't appealed to me yet.  I want my games bigger and more epic, not simplified and easily accessible.  Not to say Wii is incapable of pulling it off, but so far the general trend for Wii games seems to be towards simple games.

Learning Japanese from a gaming console would sure make watching anime easier for me.

I'm all for it as long as I don't start seeing seeing games designed to teach at a 4 or lower level.

I really wish they would do this, combining learning how to read, speak and write Japanese into one game...

It sounds to me like you're a gamer who prioritizes cinematic game presentation.  That will probably never be as central on the Wii as you would wish, but I do not believe that you will be ignored.  The Wii is set to do very much better than GameCube, and software publishers want your money.  They would be fools to not notice the sales of titles like Red Steel and Zelda and think that they could do some very good business.
