We all know that the PS2 has sold over 110 million consoles...which is 2X more than the Xbox and GC combined...but the thing that always puzzeled me is why weren't software sales through the roof. I mean yea they were better then the other two, but not too much better...

Even PS3's biggest hitterest...only managed to get 7-12 million copies...which is like 8%-10% attach rate.... I mean I know how not everybody likes the same game..but still that's really low...and most games sold ~400-500,000...which is like 2-3% attach rate.

Compare that to GeOW which has sold over 3.5 million (don't know exact number)...out of 11 million consoles...thats a 30% attach rate.

Even Resistance Fall of Man...which has recently passed 2 million...out of a fanbase of 4.5....~40% attach rate...

I know the PS family has sold over 1 Billion software titles...but just comparing some of the best sellers on the PS2 compared to the fanbase leaves me asking questions like Why didn't the best sellers sell over 20 million?

The PS2 was host to a TON of movie-based, casual and children's games, which prompted 'non-gamers' to buy them too. Not all of the userbase was 'hardcore', and even among them, not everyone like the same genres or franchises.

You answered your own question. First not everybody buys the same games. PS' huge library made it look like ''big hitters'' sold less. The best selling PS2 titles was probably GT 3 (around 14 mill) and it was released around the time the console launched.

the problem is the ps2 didnt really sell 110 million consoles. the ps2 only had a 4 year shelf life tops. my brother had 2, my one cousin had 2, my others cousins had 3. luckily ive only had 1. so right there thats consoles between 4 people. my girlfriend has never used hers to play games, it was only to play dvd's. im sure many other people have used their ps2 the exact same way. so when you figure there are about 2 consoles for each person, theres really only 55 million. which is still a lot. but over 7 years thers people that dont play them anymore as well. there was never a dedicated hardcore base of users for the system.

ps2 owners, generally speaking, are casual games therefore dont buy as many games

many people have bought the ps2 more than once so actual fanbase is probably 60-70mill

also notice MS consoles dont have lots of good games they have few and therefore the ones who have a 360 must buy Gears of Warbc its one of the very few "must have' games. Note HALO for original xbox was said to have basicaly saved the xbox

NOTE besides Gears of War, no other games has sold more than 2mill on the 360, proving my point

I'm going to say the reason why PS2 games didn't have an attach rate as high as 360 games etc is because PS2 fans are a wider variety than the competition. Some want the RPGs, some the racers, etc

FPS lovers account for most of the Xbox and 360 fanbase and Mario/Zelda lovers account for most of the Nintendo fanbase.

If that last part was true, the GC wouldn't have flopped like it did.

You also have to keep in mind that many people went through anywhere from 2-4 consoles. So it's not like 110 million people have a PS2. The actual number of people who own one is probably well under 90 million, maybe as low 60-70 million. The PS2 wasn't reliable, two of my friends each had to buy another one, my ex girlfriend ended up buying another one. Mine still works but acts up much more then it used to, so it's probably on the verge of dying.

It's probably because ~80-90% of its fanbase were casual gamers (judging by your numbers, anyway).

Piracy was also a huge factor.

The cumulative figures of PS2 software sold stands at a little over 1 billion in case none of you knew. Add the fact that again, there are pirated versions as well that aren't counted (although it's probably only a couple of millions). Plus if you remember, people wanted to buy PS2s again when the Slim was released.

Variety, there was like 4-6 great games every month, add to that piracy, I think backthen if there wasn't piracy, you would see sales figures alot better, Im from middle east, Kuwait to be specific, every retailer has pirated copies of games, everygame, I remember the release of FF10 and MGS2 pirated copies was earlier one week before the actual release date. Most of middle-eastern countries+all of Asian countries+Egypt( over 80 million of population) had piracy.

Now, there is some ministries working on this problem, now in Kuwait, you will never see pirated copies after some good work, after some warnings, I don't know, maybe it was from the UN or something like that, we were in the top 5 blacklist countries of pirated products, but it was better to play 20 games for the price of 1 :P
