How last Gen the majority of people had a PS2 and much less had an Xbox. Microsoft managed to get millions of PS2 players to transfer from Sony to Microsoft, the PS2 will have created huge brand loyalty for Sony as it was such a popular console. Therefore the Xbox 360 has managed to get a huge market segment from Sony, straight after thhe most popular system of all time. That says something. You cannot say PS3 is doing well if they are matching the 360 as there is still a huge fall from the last gen. Sony had a great brand name that was trusted and extremely popular, and now it is millions behind the Xbox.

My sentiments exactly. You cannot measure success on sales alone. Market share is king. Wii and 360 have crushed Sony this gen. Ultimately, what it leads to is a weaker position in the industry for Sony. Regardless of how many PS3s Sony sells, this generation is a loss to them and I am willing to bet money that is how they see it in the boardroom.

MS stole some market share but the one that destroyed sony's market share is the wii

No, "hardcore" gamers that don't/didn't get a PS3 bought 360s. The Wii tapped into a group of gamers that did not have PS2s or would have never purchased a 360 or PS3, therefore expanding the market. While the Wii is king, no denying, I would say the 360/PC took more potential PS3 users than the Wii did.

Actually yes. Like someone said, success cannot be measured by salea alone. Although it's true that someone said that the 360 has also benefited from the RROD (I myself am on the 2nd 360 after the first one died after 2 years), you would also have to take into consideration the amount of people that have bought the PS3 just for the blu-ray player.

the wiimade the biggest dent by being more accessable to the casual gamer. The PS2 was in the wii's spot last gen with big hitters, being the better platform for mainly sports games etc and the fact the PS brand was massive at that time helped. The wii's came along and done it all over again, i can tell you next gen it will be the same as ever.like the Nes,SNES,PS1,PS2 etc the one that appeals to the masses wil win.

the biggest threat is the wii and mainly because its captivated that market nintys competitors could crack.

When reality cannot be reconciled with one's pretext of how things "should be", the failsafe is to just make up BS to sooth the nerves

It's true that a lot more PS2 players went to the Wii than anything else. A boatload of DMC/Tekken/FF/JRPG fans still chose to forgo the PS3 in favour of Microsoft though, sure.

I don't know why people think Playstation's brand power has diminished ......... it hasn't. Playstation's main consumers have always been the casual ...... $600, $500, $400 and even $300 aren't a very casual price. Easy example ...... the 360 never saw a huge jump in sales when the arcade or even elite dropped $100 dollars like the PS3 did when the Slim was released ...... why ?? because the demand for a cheap PS3 is higher than the demand of a cheap 360.

The Wii didn't steal anything. It created it's own market by going after the non-gamers (casuals). And it worked incredibly well. So in my opinion the OP is correct.

I'm just glad most of my friends own a 360, in fact only 2 have a PS3, and they're goign to get an Xbox someday, they dont wanna be left out.

The UK is firmly in MS' pocket ... After the allmighty Nintendo that is.

My thoughts exactly.

The 360's boost over the original Xbox in user base is from PC gamers switching over imo.

Considering that I had a PS2 last gen, and a PS1 before that - and only brought an Xbox late last gen, I'd say MS have done a very good job of converting me. As for RROD...360 has a warranty and even if that 3 years didn't come in straight away - people still get them repaired. I'm on my 3rd console, and I've brought two of them (I upgraded to an Elite and had one replaced).

the wii has crushed both the 360 and ps3, the 360 even more so because it came out a year earlier. the 360 hasnt crushed anything except for maybe its credibility by having lousy hardware

In the business world, yes they have. Just look at the many Playstation exclusives that have defected. Look at who has the better software attachment rate. The larger more active online community. Also, it is estimated that anywhere from 15-30 percent, or more, of PS3 sales are to people who solely use them as BD players.

I think the 360 did steal a very small margin of PS2 owners, but I think it was mainly the Wii that took those.

possibly...i really do think that its interesting that the PS2 had a lion's share, and that sony lost an incredible amount this gen.
