When Halo 3 came out, in 2007, they introduced the theater mode. Now in 2010, COD BO has finally added their rendition of it. So now I'll ask a very simple question. Just like how Halo 2 introduced matchmaking in 2004, to have COD pick it up in 2007....what took everyone else so long? The theater is one of the better community related features I've seen in a console shooter. Why wouldn't everyone else want to give it a try!?

When Gears of War 2 came out with Horde mode, within a year, Halo ODST had it, Uncharted 2 more or less go it, COD picked it up in the form of Zombies, and now EVEN RED DEAD essentially has it. So again, what took them so long with Halo?

True, though why it isn't in more console games is a good question. Might be that certain games don't have a big enough community for developers to feel that they should spend time developing a gameplay recording sort of mode.

sometimes its a smart idea to compare games to only other games in the same platform... if not every game on the wii would get lower scores cuz of graphics.

when it comes to console fps, TC is righ about halo being ahead of the curve.

Saying that an aspect of a game is "ahead of the curve" would imply that it is somehow innovating and pioneering.

However Halo's theater mode is essentially a copy+paste of what PC first-person shooters have been doing for YEARS. The claim doesn't really work..consoles games are not so different from PC games that you can say that.

But how easy is it to do theatre recording of FPS games in PC, compared to a console shooter? Much easier.

I was specifically talking about console gaming here. I don't play PC shooters so I don't know what they have or haven't done, and I don't mean to discredit anything that has already been done. Regardless, my question really wasn't "Has this been done before?"...my question was "why haven't more shooters started doing it?" I ask because I think they're good features that add a lot to the game.

As for community, Gears of War and Call of Duty have enough of a community that could justify these features. I think games like maybe Battlefield and Medal of Honor, Resistance or Killzone could consider it too. I say that more due to the fact that these are all supposed to be Top Tier shooters.

One question though, has there been a PC shooter that had a "save film" feature as advanced as Halo's? Because the save film, as opposed to matchmaking, was what I was referring to.

With pretty much any PC game that has a recording feature, you can configure it to automatically record every game, or even keybind recording-related commands.

probably, and it's free too (Halo needs some money to render videos for you, while PC shooters can just use fraps)...

And don't quote me on this, but you could easily just use the console to force first person or third person or free cam...

I thought you might've typo'd seeing as how it sounded like you were trying to discount what I said with your response.

Ended up just adding to your comment, then.

Some games also have in-built rendering to video. Off the top of my head: UT2004 and Source Engine games.

Do FPS games on the PC have the sort of free-cam that theatre mode does? (I'm sure that they do, but just asking)

I fail to see even as a PC gamer how an open source platform which is pretty much capable of anything can be compared to a console. Well at least not directly. I think Halo 3's theatre mode was a magnificent achievement in terms of bring the sort of PC like community features to consoles.

Yet they added sprint which other games had. Added jetpacks which other games had and added "credits" and challenges that other games had, despite being on record saying they wouldn't because they didn't want to be similar to other games.

Nobody is ahead of anyone. They all take ideas from each other and most ideas come from the little guys, they just don't get the recognition so the big name games get the credit.

The fact that PCs did it isn't all that relevant to the convo at hand. Its not about doing it first. Its about popularizing it and making it standard as well as advancing in the area you are presently. Atleast that;s my view. As for Halo, well honestly, I think its just a polished game with a really big fanbase. I am not sure as of now as to what Halo "actually" did to move gaming forward. Perhaps Halo 2 and online for consoles but that's about it.

Yep....

Although theatre mode was a cool feature, it did not move forward so much (even though some games have caught on, it's not a massive shift)...

Same with forge (with even less movement in this regard...)

Which Halo didn't do. The point was that in-engine recording has been pretty much "standard" for online FPS games on the PC since like Quake 2...
