Does anyone else feel like online play is starting to kill gaming? I remember back when you could go to an arcade and there would always be that kid who could mop the floor with everyone, so it always meant so much if you could beat him. Now it's just a bunch of faceless IDs with a score next to it. No real motivation to bother beating them, and it means nothing if you do, other than your name being a little higher up on an online leader board full of people you don't even know. I also remember back when I would play multiplayer splitscreen with some of my friends, and it was always such a fun experience. Now no one even bothers with going outside and meeting up with their friends because they could just play online, and trash talk people with their mics. Who cares about being polite when everything you do online is more or less anonymous? To me, it seems like multiplayer gaming has become so lifeless and impersonal. ScoorbyWell, your on your own there buddy.
I'd rather play online and fend off zombie hordes and fight in wars with my buddies than with an AI controlled partner or by myself.

Nice first post, my friend.
I couldn't agree with you more. Online gaming is fun, no doubt, but I think it should stick to just the PC. Hit the nail right in the head.
Start playing Fighting Games :) [Still being played a lot in Arcades]
Use Online for some practise.. and travel to bigger events to do it for real
Online is a nice addition to gaming since it offers the possibility to play with ppl you normally couldn't.
I dun feel its killing gaming. At least not the Fighting Game Scene.

Online is Gaming.
;)
Yandere
The.. The lack of so many games you mus have! It hurts my heart.
No Online = FAIL
So I'm not missing anything...:)

In fact, even though I love my PS3 I tend to not get multiplayer games for it and instead get a ton of multiplayer games for the Wii since it is my party machine. I love lugging my Wii around and being able to play Wii Sports, Bomberman Blast!, Mario kart, etc. with friends at parties.
I can't imagine gaming without Online.II-FBIsniper-III like online very much, now is becoming a standard but last gen online wasn't such a big deal and it was pure awesome...well in fact 4 of my 5 top games this gen doesn't have online or I don't care for it (MGS4)
Well it does make everything more convenient. For example in the long run buying a game for 60 bucks will save you spending virtually a lot more quarters from drilling at an arcade in the next year or so at least. And you don't have to drive 10-20 minutes to get to your local hangout spot.
But on the other hand yeah, eventually the whole online movement will one cause everyone to stay at home and never need to see sunlight, because you can pretty much do anything with a game console and a computer with high speed internet.
Before online gaming started to make a move, i remember buying games cause of the single player and the story and buying games that i can play with my friends and such.
Now i buy games for mostly the online like COD5 , i mean the single player was good but i bought the game for the enjoyment of online.
Also i noticed that if a game has online the story mode is a lot shorter.
online isn't killing gaming, its developers that keep relying upon it. online is great when its done right, but when every thing is sacrificed for the sake of an online option then thats the developers fault.
Thats what leaderboards are for:|
Competitive multiplayer isnt ALWAYS about getting the high score as it was back in the day with more simplistic games. As time goes by, people get better and better at games, so it because very difficult to program AI to acurately relfect human strategy and behavior without being totally scripted. This is where online gaming comes in, it increases the unpredictabilty, and makes games have more replay value if done right. You are talking about beating the high scores, or maybe fighting games. We have leaderboards, and Achievements/Trophies in the place of those now.
I think he just gets owned alot online, and now he's bitter about it:lol:. I get owned all the time because im a noob, but there is some fun to that because i dont take it too serious, and i eventually get better, and that usually makes be a force to be reckoned with in single player :PHow is it killing gaming when it gives games more replay value?

No it's not killing gaming. If anything it's HELPING gaming. It allows for more opportunities to play with real players, adds a heap of replayability to games, and is convenient. It's also a great way to meet gamers from around the world.
Online isn't interferring with the singleplayer, and your not being forced to play it, so saying that its killing gaming is unfounded and illogical.
Online gaming has always been around. It's just still fairly new on consoles so it seems like it's having a negative impact on games. No it really isn't, there are some games with an online MP focus and those with a SP focus, what is disturbing thought is the lack of splitscreen games. halo is actually one of the few 4 player split screen games.
you know how aweome it would have been if games always had online? imagine if you could chat with a bunch of friends and play against 8 people in the original mario kart back in 1992, or face of in street fighter or mortal combat against more people than just close friends and siblings, it would have been so sick.Whats killing games is that people are just forgetting about single player experiences, it seems that the only good ones now are rpgs
Most of my gaming time this gen went to online. So no, for me it's not killing anything. This doesn't mean I hate Single player only games btw. I love them equally. killerfistYep. Online has evolved gaming.

I fully support this, especially the part about local multiplayer splitscreen appearing to die out. Consoles are losing one of their few advantages against PC gaming and are attempting to do something that PC gaming has done far longer and is doing far better.

If you don't like it stop playing online. Simple as that.
Its not killing gaming, it is expanding it, sure developers have an excuse to make crappy campaign modes and not less features as well as charging you for bonus content, but many people buy games soley on the multiplayer. Also in some games like Fight Night Round 4 you do get a prize for being number 1 on the leader boards.

No, he's not.
I guess it certainly contributes to the cost of development which, as we all know, is a major pain for the industry right now. Also, online is just not good for a lot of games. Its almost being used as a gimmick to generate sales. I dont like it when significant content is cut / just not done in order to accomodate it.
I wish games were cheaper to make :(
No one is forcing you to play online, the majority of games with an online component have local, so QQTaMuK711
Yet big games like Resistance 2, Killzone 2, The Orange Box and Unreal Tournament 3 don't have local splitscreen multiplayer. I believe Call of Duty: World at War doesn't have local splitscreen multiplayer either.
Its like your saying we shouldnt have world championships because people like yourself cant no deal with being beaten by people who you do not personally know. If you said developers concentrating on Online play has ruined the core gaming (single player) then I would agree to a point but to say its ruined gaming?? no way has it.

Yea I hate that, your friends come over, oh cool you got ______, u pop it in, no multiplayer other than online....... This has happend to me sooo many times. Whats the point. I would rather play with friends in person then online with random ppl or even online with friends. COD WAW does have split though. Plus alot of games focus too much on online content etc, and they do a crappy job with the rest of the game.

Internets fault or developers fault plus UT3 does have splitscreen.... maybe its just the ps3 your obviously playing hasnt got any spiltscreen games ;) Hahai like it, but i hate when they gimp the single player game as an excuse to make online. would anyone really buy codwaw without the online portion. the single player was short and really poor compared to cod4's (which was also short).
A game should balance the two like killzone 2 or halo 3 that had both that are very good. cod should either go fully online or work harder on what originally made its name the single player.
