I have noticed that online features becoming standard this gen. has been very much the double edged sword. It has led to a flood of FPS with very short campaigns because they focus on multiplayer. I have seen the pull from single player games to multiplayer games. We also haveDLC being used to milk consumers of features that might have already been in the game. But on the same token I have seen a rise in the fighting genre. Online capability has revitalized my love for fighting games since I can play against a real player on a regular basis. It allows for updates to games to be implemented when there is a problem and buggy games can and do get last minute fixes. And of course it gives gamers a sense of community, they can now play and communicate with people who love the same hobby without having to loiter near a Gamestop.

I guess you can't have it all but overall I do enjoy online gaming. I just really hope single player games to crumble under the pressure, they really are my favorite kind of games.

I think that a reason why you don't see to many Platformers which is disappointing. But at the sametime I love the online features in videogames today. I play NHL 09, and I gotta say that the EASHL is the real deal when it comes to play sport games online.

That could be but I honestly think platformers kind of started to suffer when we shifted from 2D to 3D. I mean look at Sonic, he can't handle the switch. I don't recall a ton of platformers during the early PS2 eras. But I can see how it might hurt the future of platformers unless they go the LBP route.

Well. You had Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Psychonauts. I guess it's appeal then.

Hurting it. for mp make games that are just meant for mp ie tf2, lf4 etc, for sp make games that are meant just for sp ie crysis stalker, bioshock etc. the mp in cod4 made the sp mode suffer badly and this is the case for most games. or there is the other one where they try to do both and fail at both while they could have focused just on one and it might have been great.

Hurting it. Devs feel like they have to include online even to games that don't need it because they know reviewers will lower the score if it isn't present. Adding online to every game also takes precious resources away from having a long and deep SP game.

It's detrimental to console gaming, I believe. Short single-player is a bad thing in any genre.

I definitely miss the good ol' PS2 days where I can go through all those excellent SP games with relatively good lengths for first playthroughs. Online standardization has the trend and making many potentially epic games much shorter and lower in quality for the SPs than they really could have been. But its not really a bad thing, since it forced a lot of other genres to have good online where they traditionally don't have any of them, like SF4 for example, greatly extending console owner's reach into communities and increasing their competitive level. It can't really be argued that it decreases play time though, since due the way online works people play MPs way more in total time length more than most people do with games last gen.

I would rather blame the developers than what i believe is a good thing "Online Standardization" -DLC if done right is not a bad thing(GTA The Lost and Damned for instance) -Multiplayer games have only gotten better(atleast on consoles) because of it Length doesn't bother me as long as its "quality short" because i hated those "longer" games that were only long because of a giant filler sequence.

If they can somehow connect all the online communities (PC, 360, PS3), just imagine the possibilities....

now that would be awesome. pc and x360 can already do it but devs don't like to let k/m play against gamepad so they don't bother most of the time or disable the k/m so much it is close to useless.

Hurting it. I've dipped into Online gaming a few times and I don't enjoy it. I'm pretty much an exclusively single-player guy, so any time resources are obviously taken away from making an excellent single-player experience to add to the online portion it really grinds my gears. Online should be a bonus, nothing more, nothing less. On consoles at least, it should NEVER be the primary focus of development.

Its tough. If you are one who gets into online MP, you really get a lot of bang-for-your buck with an online MP. Its endless hours of play that varies every time, for as long as the community stays strong. But I get how some are pissde their singleplayer is shortened or cut to make way for online MP. I see how that sucks. I also find it lame as hell that devs are cutting games short and selling the rest later in DLC. But this has more to do with DVD than online MP.

Online gaming is the future. I don't understand how can someone play SP only parts of a game. Especially in genres likes FPS where playing against people is just more fun than playing against AI.

most fps this gen are 8-10 hours long, i dont think that is short. online is helping gaming experience. i dont think I would have spent hundreds of hours in cod4 if there was no online, same with plenty of other games.

Playing against the AI or other people isn't the point. People enjoy single-player campaigns for things other than the bare basics of gameplay (which is all you get in multiplayer). In online you don't get compelling stories or characters, you don't get atmosphere or immersion, you don't get exciting set-pieces or boss battles. You just get to shoot/fight/whatever some others guys.

Well I guess it depends on what you expect from games. If I'm playing a FPS, I'm expecting combat and I want combat. That's why I like MP because it's combat based. If I want deep characters and stories, I'll play a RPG or adventure game.

some of the blame should go to the reviewers, like ign who will take off alot of points if the game doesn't have MP, which is enough to flop a game most of the time

Edit: Whoops, should probably read the first post eh?

Anyways I think it is hurting my experiance a bit. As much as online play is fun, when I buy a $60 game, I want a well rounded experiance. If your going to put out a multiplayer focused game, sell it for cheaper.

helping but not at the expense of split screen, Split screen is slowly being phased out, And this sucks, I wish games like KZ2 had them, It's all about milking more copies, People need to have more copies of the game simultaneously when they're playing online with each other rather than locally on one television with one copy of the game, Devs have realized this and are slowly cutting out local multiplayer, It might not completely die off but it'll be less respected or supported in the near future

Not just that but they have made online games priorities because these are not games that can be leant between friends so everyone can have fun. Everyone has to own a copy. I just wish Devs and Reviewers realistically thought about what games should and should not have online play. I am happy Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank didnt compromise itself to paste some lame multiplayer like The Darkness did.

Until recently I absolutely loved MP. It was where I spent the bulk of my gaming time went. Now? Not so much. I just cant get into multiplayers anymore. Last MP I really loved was COD4, and I stopped playing that last summer.

I have fun with MP but I am honestly at the point of O.D.ing on FPS mp. There are just too many, fighters are ok because I went years without really playing compeittion but FPS are getting stale.

Why? Is a SP game somehow worth more than a MP one?

I'd much rather they go the Warhawk/SOCOM route if you're developing a game based almost entirely on multiplayer. If the game includes a single player component and then gets rather positive reviews, it will often create a false sense that the single player campaign itself is good (see most FPS this generation and quite a few fighters).

I'm not advocating a full-on segregation of multi-player and single player, but it really seems like win-win with games like Warhawk/SOCOM: both are offered at about 2/3 of retail price, seemingly satisfy those who are seeking a multiplayer experience, and aren't attempting to make a single player that is little more than training for the multiplayer. It seems rather good to me, as it allows those who like those games to get them quicker (since whatever time spent making single player is eliminated) and allows them to be bought for cheaper. I'm also not saying that the point you quoted is right, but citing some precedent, it does make sense. It would also be a nice warning beacon to anyone thinking a highly rated game means it has a good campaign; that may have been true for most if not all highly rated games last generation, but unfortunately it's about 50/50 this generation for a majority of games that include a multiplayer component.

personally its hurting my experience a bit. i have absolutely, positively no interest in online gaming. couldnt care less. i much prefer a big single player campaign in games. unfortunately these types fo games are getting rarer and rarer.
