I have serously been avoiding all articles and videos related to this new ONlive service until yesterday... has anyone else seen this because.. Im just absolutely amazed by what this means for gaming, think about the way gaming will change and in my opinion- for the better.. OnLive looks incedible, I eally hope they can make this work, there will never be a need for a console or high end computer again... incredible

This is kind of old...

But you'll need good bandwidth and a massive cap in order to play games in HD. Also, i'm still skeptical about the low ping...

Ummmm... yes... yes I have. I like it. I hope it takes off and is able to pull off lag free instant gaming that can be accessed by even a crappy netbook.

Dude, those are the most pathetic reason as to why this service might not be a success. This is the 21st century, not every has internet, but most people do... Not everyone has cars, but gas still sells... stupid example I know, but still similar... in a "that was a really crapy example" kind of way.

Im sorry it might be the twentieth century but this is not a fantasy world, plenty of people might have internet, but not eveyrone has good internet especially in time of recession like this people have to cut back, your just in your own dream land where everyone rides a unicorn and get free internetz.

People would kill if xbl went down for a few hours, and they can still play offline games.....imagine what people will say when onlive goes down for half a day, you can't play any games also if only about maybe half if that of the people who use xbl and Psn actually have online and use it then how many people do you think are gonna use Onlive a all online service

Im telling you we just don't have the internet in this day and age to realise something like this

Those who say this will work obviously doesn't rly know how Onlive works. If some1 is playing crysis at the highest settings on Onlive it doesnt just mean that you most have a good online connection, it means that there has to be one pc standing in a server room working only for you and your crysis. Obviously that means that if 1 million people want to play crysis at the same time they need 1million computers to run just crysis, and they dont have the resources to buy that many computers/a super computer that can run 1million versions of crysis at the same time.

Ever heard of Skyfire? This is the same with what OnLive is doing, streaming your experience without crunching your mobile handset. The server side does the crunching and streams the video to your mini console. What's so bad about that? No more failing consoles, no broken media, small profile. The world is now moving towards cloud based operations, to get things done... That means the server side hardware is upgraded without buying new consoles, larger games that surpass the current media. I'm actually pretty enthusiastic about it to be honest. Even if it did fail, it's a new idea that has been done and will be out there for someone else to grab a hold of that idea to make it their own. Sorta like what Apple did with iPhone...

Plus we're living in a age of technology redundancy. We've learned in the past how to overcome these particular failures, backup systems, server farms. This is opening a new door to things.

O...M...G... You screwed that up... Please just at least go read a wikipedia page about OnLive so you gain a basic understanding of how it works.

I honestly don't see what's so bad about this. Engineers are developing more robust hardware, faster and more efficient. I honestly don't see anything negative about this. So what if there was a power outage at that server farm, here comes the back up's and routers, routing you to the next nearest location. Who Knows, they may come out with a OnLive console that may cache your most favorite game (or que'd games) without you knowing about it, so you can pick up where you left off during down time. It's also a good crackdown from pirating, so I can see Sony already thinking ahead with what this is capable of, since they try so hard against pirates...oh wait...they already trademarked PS Cloud after the announcement said the wiki!

What you just said has nothing to do with my question. I was not questioning Onlive (This time) but the fact that he said no one knows what cloud computing is, not even Sony and AMD. Such a silly statement.

Another reason why PC gamers won't like Onlive is because you wou;dn't be able to make/add mods if you got the game with Onlive

I suppose I formulated myself badly and you misunderstood what I meant. Now, I do not rly know the details behind how a cloud server works. But my point was and is that to run a highly demanding game like crysis for 1million users or more you need the prossesing power to do so. Which as I said, would mean either 1 pc for each user or one or more super computers powerfull enough to run several versions of the game at the same time. No technology can make a game like crysis run out of nowhere. You need alot of prossesing power to run it, and there is no way that they can afford all the prossesing power needed to satisfy the market they've been advertising for (the guys who wants to play prossesing heavy games like crysis). Btw, wikipedia (which I know might be wrong) says: High-end games such as Crysis Warhead will require one GPU per game however. Which basically proves my point.....

Exactly theres another problem, we currently dont have the computers which can serve multiple people, and even if we construct super computers, theyll need to be tailor made which obviously isnt easy

I still think it's ahead of its time, maybe if they come back in about 7-8 years it might be able to be a quality service and a major part of the gaming industry, and I'm still a little sceptical about the whole thing at the moment.

OnLive isnt going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe 10 or so years from now, but not in the near future.

The biggest obstacles it has are the casual gamers and the Big Three. Casual gamers aren't going to be interested in this and won't be willing to bother with it. This limits the consumer base to less than 30M after 3-4 years (IMO, like the PS1/2 and Wii aren't built on just hardcore gamers). And the Big Three are going to do everything in their will to prevent it from working well. These fan-loyal and leaders in the gaming market have a lot up their sleeves. Don't forgot companies like GameStop. They probably won't sell the hardware.

i think streaming/downloading games will eventually become the standard. but many people dont trust in it enough yet, so i think onlive will fail, but maybe 2 gens from now, it will work

[QUOTE="Bebi_vegeta"]

[QUOTE="nc_soldier"]Those who say this will work obviously doesn't rly know how Onlive works. If some1 is playing crysis at the highest settings on Onlive it doesnt just mean that you most have a good online connection, it means that there has to be one pc standing in a server room working only for you and your crysis. Obviously that means that if 1 million people want to play crysis at the same time they need 1million computers to run just crysis, and they dont have the resources to buy that many computers/a super computer that can run 1million versions of crysis at the same time. nc_soldier

You don't even have a clue... it's a cloud server... did you even informe yourself?

Well they only stated that the highest resolution they would output is 720p, they didn't talk about 1080p... But I did found that they would use 1 GPU per Crysis... and there's plenty of GPU that can play 720p for Crysis.

I never understood this argument. Why would it work in 10 years, but not today? For the record, I don't think it will ever be a viable platform of gaming for me.

I know we're all guessing about how or bad this service will turn out to be, but I think the better argument might be that it could start replacing consoles and PCs in a decade. For right now it will run along side them as another alternative, because as has already been mentioned, not everyone has the bandwidth for this kind of thing (especially without caps).

there will never be a need for a console or high end computer again... incredible

There will always be a reason to own other systems and that reason will always be the same: games. Anybody who thinks that you will get to play all games on OnLive needs to get sober. Why would Micorsoft hand over their games? Or Sony? Or Nintendo? Right, because they don't like money anymore.
