According to the July 2015 Valve Hardware Survey, only 34% of the PC gamers run their games at 1920x1080 resolution, compared to the previous year survey results of over 32%. This is surprising, considering that gamers on Sony Corp.’s (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 4 platform are able to play all of the games that are advertised at the said resolution without a hitch. PC gamers are also required to have the capable hardware to run the game without problems on the resolution, which obviously does not look like the case here.

I'm playing at 1440p or 1080p when game engines have a hard time with the higher resolution. Been doing that for years so what group am I in?

Flawed comparison since PC install base is far larger than PS4.

Steam surveys are flawed. I have steam installed on 3 separate laptops myself. Many people I know have steam on multiple devices. The hardware poll is random.

I understand that a lot of people still do game on laptops as that's all that is practical for them to own. Still, 34% of 100+ million Steam accounts is still more PS4s or Xbox Ones out there. Just something to consider.

Another thing about that number is it's always going to increase. So 34% this year, 37% next. It's always going up. PC hardware never stagnates and never gets worse. While console gamers have to accept that stagnated and aging hardware limits the resolution and framerate of new games so devs put the processing into polygons, textures, lighting, and post, PC gamers never have to accept compromise. If a PC gamer wants a higher framerate or resolution, they can buy an upgrade and have it the next day, not wait for Sony or Microsoft to release a new console.

Not at all since what he is saying is all PS4 can play at 1080p while not all PC can play 1080p basically.

I play many of my games above 1080p through DSR including Witcher 3.

Hi I'm a PC gamer who can either run my games at 1440p 15fps or 1080p 60fps with drops. That means I can go online and lie that all PC gamers play games at 1440p 60fps

Percentage based comparison is flawed when PC and PS4 user base counts are not similar.

Steam has about 125 million active users. One can conclude 42 million steam users play games at 1920x1080p.

Ya because that's how it works.... I range from 30-50fps at 1440p and a steady 60fps on most tittles that are well put together at 1080p. And from what I'm assuming is coming from someone who games on consoles only, FPS argument doesn't work when neither of the big two consistently do 60fps in the majority of their games.

Not surprised. The most popular games on PC(League, Dota 2, CS:GO, TF2, etc) can be ran on a vast majority of machines. I believe that's one reason why they are so popular. The majority of people aren't as hung up on resolution like SW's.

1. You under stand that 34% of PC users is exponentially more than the number of PS4/XB users...Right? According to the same survey more PC gamers run at higher settings than XB/PS system sales.

2. This survey is for all PCs, not just gaming PCs. Every average joe or grandpa who uses his PC for solitare or whatever is included. It does anyone in Steam.

@ttboy: Its likely many PC gamers are choosing resolutions above 1080p in the survey making the 1080p percent smaller.

And yet multiplats are best on PC 90% of the time, with more rigs playing the better version than ps4/xbone systems sold.

The next issue in the survey is the 1366x768 resolution with a total share of over 26%. This resolution is usually used on laptop screens, which mean a major number of steam users are laptop users. This is not particularly surprising because an increasing number of games on Steam are now playable on fairly low end machines. This makes the games within reach of the casual gamer and kids, who are not able to or are not willing to spend on high end machines.
