What do you prefer open world or linear games? How open do you like your games to be? I gave some examples in the poll.

I prefer linear games for the most part. open world games usually get tiresome and time consuming. I think their style is overrated and alot people get these pretentious attitudes reguarding them. they treat them like they are a higher form of gaming. Some castigate other games simply because they are linear (like the blithering, deluded "**** for brains" that write for Edge magazine").

Open world games have their appeal, but when it comes down to it, almost none of my favorite games are open world. at least not in the same sense (examples would be super mario 64 or the spyro games)

Depends on the game. Minecraft would suck if it was linear. Uncharted would suck if it was open world.

Open World is fun to a point...then it gets too boring for me to actually complete the game...I just have trouble completing straight ended open world games. Although none of them are bad I get too side tracked lol. So Personally my preference is more towards linearity. Get from point A to point B without having to deal with extra factors C,D,E,F.

I prefer open world games, but just as long as movement is quick and there isnt leveling. I just like to play, and explore the world when i dont feel like doing the missions. I dont want to have to grind for a while so i can face my next boss. I like the style of say infamous or RDR. Can play through the entire game without doing a signle side mission.

Too hard a question dues to the fact that there are superb open world games and superb linear games. Its kind of weird to pick one over the other as both have good and bad points.

This question always comes up, and I dont know why :P. It is like asking if I prefer to sleep or be awake. Well I tend to like both :P. I love Uncharted, and at the same time I love Metroid and Red Dead Redemption.

I like all styles, and I feel some games should be linear while others should be open world, others should be forked (multiple paths leading to the same goal).

Both. RDR and Uncharted 2 are a couple of my favorite games. mrmusicman247

This,

I couldn't decide, some games wouldn't feel right being open world, and if every game was a sandbox/open world game, they just wouldn't be as special. And I definitely wouldn't want every game to be linear either.

GTA, RDR and Uncharted 1 + 2 are some my favorite games this gen.

Both and anything in between are good depending on the game. However, the ratio of linear games compared to other kinds has become way to high imo, so I tend to look for more openly-like games currently.

Linear, for the most part. Open world games that rely on you making your own fun like GTA, bore the hell out of me.

Open World games are more immersive. Love exploring areas and turning the maps off so the world can be memorized.

Really can't choose one or the other, as neither can automatically be superior to the other. I suppose Open world is better for the awesome free form feeling, and can typically allow more gameplay hours from me. Yet linear would typically be better for pacing and storytelling.

Some N64 games come to mind. By the Way, A lot of shooters which are popular now are linear. Gears of War if THE perfect example.

I like both. In a game like just cause 2 I can play it like I want to play and go around the world and do a lot of crazy things. And a game like ninja gaiden stigma 2 I can have tons of fun going down the straight path taking out what ever comes my way.

If a game has a plot, it usually is linear or a linear game with multi-pathes.

Non linear open world would be like mount and blade.

My preference would depend on the game, I guess.

I don't know if you call them open world, but maps found in GR are not linear and allow for open ended gameplay with the gamer choosing the route to take to an objective. The design of said level is an art form. GR maps were 400x400 meters square (the Pentagon could fit in such an area) yet they felt much bigger than they actually were.

Linear levels do not allow for this and as a result, result in smaller levels that feel cramped.

Something in between.. Most games out there that claim to be a sandbox are not really sandboxs.. Take for instance GTA4.. Its not a sandbox.. There are a few islands of activity of quests, but you can't do much outside of that except fight cops and what not.. A true sandbox game in my mind is something like X3 Terran Conflict.. A game where you can making a trading empire, become a bounty hunter, be a pirate, do the storyline.. Go into war with certain spieces with a fleet..

Depends on the game. Minecraft would suck if it was linear. Uncharted would suck if it was open world.

Open World like GTA.

I hate linear corridor shooters like Batman AA
