I like open world games when I need a relaxing game but for the most part I prefer the linear stuff.

Open world. Nothing beats wandering about, exploring, fighting, or whatever, at my own pace. From A Link to the Past on SNES, to Elder Scrolls, Assassin's Creed and Red Dead Redemption this gen, nothing beats them

I tend to get more value out of open world games. I'm tempted to explore all the different areas in hopes of finding something new. Linear games don't really do that for me, since it's just point A to point B. That doesn't make them bad by any means; they can still be fantastic games.

Open world, if I wanted to watch a bunch of linear movies I would use my PS3 more.

When I think of linear I think of Final Fantasy XIII and Dragon Age 2. They're both horrible.

Definitely open world. It's not a console thing. It works the best on PC.

I like both the same. But each one goes better with different genres.

Please.

So Gears of War 3 is a movie because it has cutscenes? Mass Effect is a movie because it has boring conversations?

I don't know about Gears because I don't own a 360, and I'm not a giant fan of Mass Effect but at least the player is able to choose most dialog and feel like they are actually still playing the game.

It really depends on the franchise, some games work better if more straightforward and some don't

Well, I do like both, and they are both good for different reasons.

An open world gives you exploration and freedom, and discovering things through exploration and looking through "nooks and crannies" can be very satisfying, but an open world game usually also comes with some degree of backtracking and can become redundant.

What's nice about a linear game is that it's generally not as much of an "investment" to play. Generally an open world game is full of content and sh*t to do, which isn't bad, but now that I'm older and have more responsibilities and stuff to deal with, playing very long, open games can be a bit much at times. That plus a game that is linear doesn't have as large a scape to deal with, which means the focus goes from adding as much content as possible to just having some creative level design, which in some ways I prefer.

I kind of like linear games more, but I'm fine with open, non-linear games as well.

I'm partial to Open World but hey if the journey is solid through and through then I'm fine with both.

Open world. The Elder Scrolls. GTA. Red Dead Redemption. Fallout. I love open world games. I don't have a problem with linear ones neither.

Indeed...

I have no general answer. Some games benefit from linearity, some from being open-world.Ultimately,depends on the implementation.

Open world is almost always better. There are a few exceptions where a more linear level design leads to better atmosphere, but for the most part, open world is superior.

It really depends.

In games like Galaxy and Uncharted, linear is better.

In games like Zelda and Batman, open is better.

For the most part, linear. Having an open world doesn't make a game any better, especially since most open world games rely on the same old mission structure. Oh, you want to talk to Joe ? okay, drive/walk/ride for 10 minutes so he can speak to you for 3 minutes and then make you drive/walk/ride another 10 minutes to get to the actual mission. Another gripe I have is in games like GTA where your working for like 3 guys at once. I think it just kills the storyline because it feels like your just playing different parts at a time while in Mafia 2, the missions are completely one after another and it makes things mesh. Open World games tend to have issues that are never present in linear games and they can be tiresome and boring.

I enjoy both....

Stalker, Gothic 1-3, Elderscrolls, Red Dead, ARMA2, etc... all are a ton of fun with tons of space to do things

But at the same time I love some linear games to just as much.

Linear games are good for more variable and unique environments and level design.

While open world's good for replayability and fun factor.

I'll say both. :P
