Talking as part of an in-depth interview published on Gamasutra today, Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton has revealed that there are over 200 developers working to complete Metal Gear Solid 4 for PlayStation 3.

Seems kinda like overkill to me. I mean I'm no expert but even 100 developers working on a single game is a large team.

I remember reading somewhere about the size of the PGR dev team, I remember it being huge.. Can anyone back that up?

hey if that is what they want to do with it I think it is great. It is not overkill if they paying for it and the game rocks when it comes out. Call it a good investment to invest in great talent.

Quite a few games have more than that, I'm sure Crytek went from 20-Devs for Far Cry (PC) to 250 Devs on Crysis .... that may include Intel/Microsoft/Nvidia staff however.

I doubt it will be very good then. There's an old saying that "too many cooks spoil the broth". 200 is WAY too many cooks.

The best game that Solid Snake will appear in this gen will undoubtedly be Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

If only 1 million people buy it, its making 60million dollars

(and 1 million copies sold is very low for a title like MGS-granted it is for the PS3's limited fanbase)

Based on the fact that Motorstorm--the top selling game for PS3--sold 2 million copies (fact) I'd guess it'd sell more than or equal to 2 million copies (thats generating 120 million dollars at the LEAST)

MGS 2 :SOL moved a ton of PS2s, MGS3 didnt move many becaue everyone already had one by the time it camr out.

So in summation, if a some new dev wants to make the next great epic on the PS3, they wont be able to afford to do so. Duly noted on the 'PS3 WTF?' list.

Every dollar of that amount does not go to Konomai to help cover costs, hope you understand that. I believe that $10 goes to Sony just for license fee. Add in retailer profit, manufacturing+shipping costs, and advertising, and you lose more...a lot more.

Also, wasn't motorstormed packaged with a bundle? Those count towards copies "sold", but don't generate the same style of revenue as a stand alone does.

It won't matter to me how many are working on the game. Though that is nice to hear, more people in the work force=more money! Now, I'll be playing this game come Saturday. 8) at E for All (should it be there...)

and thats 200 Devs in house, there are about 500 people including outsourced people

i dont thin kthey passed 50 million, for all we know its the biggest game Konami has and they could of just brought 100 extra developers to finish the game before 2008 :o

Having 200 devs on one game is a double edged sword. 200 people are hard to manage and keep focused, but I'm sure Kojima is stringent on the quality control.

I could see 200 devs working on a game of huge scope, like Mass Effect for example, but on a Metal Gear Solid game ? .... Perhaps the PS3 really is a pain to develop for.... ?

They must have 200 devs working on everything but the game's textures, because they are foul.

No, but don't you think that a linear game like Metal Gear Solid wouldn't require such a lavish development team ? I seem to recall MGS4 being slated for a 2007 release earlier this year, only to magically be announced for 2008 a while later.... Of course, this would have nothing to do with the BottleNeck3 hardware, now would it... It is a possible scenario, yet even though I don't own a PS3, I don't think this game will receive anything but AAA.

Sony and Konami are going to market the hell out of this game to try and make money back. And the way MGS4 gameplay is looking, its not just for the hardcore gamer anymore.
